Chris Lamb: Lintian: We are all Perl developers now

Lintian is a static analysis tool for Debian packages, reporting on various errors, omissions and general quality-assurance issues to maintainers. I've previously written about my exploits with Lintian as well as authoring a short tutorial on how to write your own Lintian check. Anyway, I recently uploaded version 2.5.53 about two months since previous release. The biggest changes you may notice are supporting the latest version of the Debian Policy as well the addition of checks to encourage the migration to Python 3. Chris Lamb: Free software activities in July 2017

Here is my monthly update covering what I have been doing in the free software world during July 2017 (previous month): I also blogged about my recent lintian hacking and installation-birthday package.
Reproducible builds

Whilst anyone can inspect the source code of free software for malicious flaws, most software is distributed pre-compiled to end users. The motivation behind the Reproducible Builds effort is to permit verification that no flaws have been introduced either maliciously or accidentally during this compilation process by promising identical results are always generated from a given source, thus allowing multiple third-parties to come to a consensus on whether a build was compromised. (I have generously been awarded a grant from the Core Infrastructure Initiative to fund my work in this area.) This month I:
  • Assisted Mattia with a draft of an extensive status update to the debian-devel-announce mailing list. There were interesting follow-up discussions on Hacker News and Reddit.
  • Submitted the following patches to fix reproducibility-related toolchain issues within Debian:
  • I also submitted 5 patches to fix specific reproducibility issues in autopep8, castle-game-engine, grep, libcdio & tinymux.
  • Categorised a large number of packages and issues in the Reproducible Builds "notes" repository.
  • Worked on publishing our weekly reports. (#114 #115, #116 & #117)

I also made the following changes to our tooling:
diffoscope

diffoscope is our in-depth and content-aware diff utility that can locate and diagnose reproducibility issues.

  • comparators.xml:
    • Fix EPUB "missing file" tests; they ship a META-INF/container.xml file. [ ]
    • Misc style fixups. [ ]
  • APK files can also be identified as "DOS/MBR boot sector". (#868486)
  • comparators.sqlite: Simplify file detection by rewriting manual recognizes call with a Sqlite3Database.RE_FILE_TYPE definition. [ ]
  • comparators.directory:
    • Revert the removal of a try-except. (#868534)
    • Tidy module. [ ]

strip-nondeterminism

strip-nondeterminism is our tool to remove specific non-deterministic results from a completed build.

  • Add missing File::Temp imports in the JAR and PNG handlers. This appears to have been exposed by lazily-loading handlers in #867982. (#868077)

buildinfo.debian.net

buildinfo.debian.net is my experiment into how to process, store and distribute .buildinfo files after the Debian archive software has processed them.

  • Avoid a race condition between check-and-creation of Buildinfo instances. [ ]

Debian LTS

This month I have been paid to work 18 hours on Debian Long Term Support (LTS). In that time I did the following:

  • Issued DLA 1014-1 for libclamunrar, a library to add unrar support to the Clam anti-virus software to fix an arbitrary code execution vulnerability.
  • Issued DLA 1015-1 for the libgcrypt11 crypto library to fix a "sliding windows" information leak.
  • Issued DLA 1016-1 for radare2 (a reverse-engineering framework) to prevent a remote denial-of-service attack.
  • Issued DLA 1017-1 to fix a heap-based buffer over-read in the mpg123 audio library.
  • Issued DLA 1018-1 for the sqlite3 database engine to prevent a vulnerability that could be exploited via a specially-crafted database file.
  • Issued DLA 1019-1 to patch a cross-site scripting (XSS) exploit in phpldapadmin, a web-based interface for administering LDAP servers.
  • Issued DLA 1024-1 to prevent an information leak in nginx via a specially-crafted HTTP range.
  • Issued DLA 1028-1 for apache2 to prevent the leakage of potentially confidential information via providing Authorization Digest headers.
  • Issued DLA 1033-1 for the memcached in-memory object caching server to prevent a remote denial-of-service attack.

diffoscope is our in-depth and content-aware diff utility that can locate and diagnose reproducibility issues.

  • New features/optimisations:
    • Extract squashfs archive in one go rather than per-file, speeding up ISO comparison by ~10x.
    • Add support for .docx and .odt files via docx2txt & odt2txt. (#859056).
    • Add support for PGP files via pgpdump. (#859034).
    • Add support for comparing Pcap files. (#858867).
    • Compare GIF images using gifbuild. (#857610).
  • Bug fixes:
    • Ensure that we really are using ImageMagick and not the GraphicsMagick compatibility layer. (#857940).
    • Fix and add test for meaningless 1234-content metadata when introspecting archives. (#858223).

strip-nondeterminism

strip-nondeterminism is our tool to remove specific non-deterministic results from a completed build.

  • Fix a possible endless loop while stripping .ar files due to trusting the file's own file size data. (#857975).
  • Add support for testing files we should reject and include the filename when evaluating fixtures.

buildinfo.debian.net is my experiment into how to process, store and distribute .buildinfo files after the Debian archive software has processed them.

  • Add support for Format: 1.0. (#20).
  • Don't parse Format: header as the source package version. (#21).
  • Show the reproducible status of packages.

Chris Lamb: Free software activities in October 2016

Here is my monthly update covering what I have been doing in the free software world (previously):

Debian & Reproducible builds

Whilst anyone can inspect the source code of free software for malicious flaws, most GNU/Linux distributions provide binary (or "compiled") packages to end users. The motivation behind the Reproducible Builds effort is to allow verification that no flaws have been introduced either maliciously and accidentally during this compilation process by promising identical binary packages are always generated from a given source.

  • Presented a talk entitled "Reproducible Builds" talk at Software Freedom Kosova, in Prishtina, Republic of Kosovo.

  • I filed my 2,500th bug in the Debian BTS: #840972: golang-google-appengine: accesses the internet during build.

  • In order to build packages reproducibly, one not only needs identical sources but also some external and sharable definition of the environment used for a particular build, stipulating such things such as the version numbers of the required build-dependencies. It is not currently clear how to handle these .buildinfo files after the archive software has processed them and how to make them available to the world so I started development on a proof-of-concept server to see what issues arise in practice. It is available at buildinfo.debian.net.

  • Chaired an IRC meeting and ran a poll to determine a regular time .

  • Submitted two design proposals to our wiki page.

  • Improvements to our tests.reproducible-builds.org testing framework:

    • Move regular "Scheduled in..." messages to the #debian-reproducible-changes IRC channel.
    • Use our log_info method instead of manual echo calls.
    • Correct an "all sources packages" "all source packages" typo.
    • Submit .buildinfo files to buildinfo.debian.net.
    • Create GPG key on nodes for buildinfo.debian.net at deploy time, not "lazily".

My work in the Reproducible Builds project was also covered in our weekly reports. (#75, #76, #77 & #78).

I also submitted 14 patches to fix specific reproducibility issues in bio-eagle, cf-python, fastx-toolkit, fpga-icestorm, http-icons, lambda-align, mypy, playitslowly, seabios, stumpwm, sympa, tj3, wims-help & xotcl.
Debian LTS

This month I have been paid to work 13 hours on Debian Long Term Support (LTS). In that time I did the following:
  • Seven days of "frontdesk" duties, triaging CVEs, etc.
  • Issued DLA 647-1 for freeimage correcting an out-of-bounds write vulnerability in the XMP image handling functionality.
  • Issued DLA 649-1 for python-django fixing a possible CSRF protection bypass on sites that use Google Analytics.
  • Issued DLA 654-1 for libxfixes preventing an integer overflow when a malicious client sent INT_MAX as a "length".
  • Issued DLA 662-1 for quagga correcting a programming error where two constants were confused that could cause stack overrun in IPv6 routing code.
  • Issued DLA 688-1 for cairo to prevent a DoS attack where a malicious SVG could generate invalid pointers.

Shirish Agarwal: mtpfs, feh and not being able to share the debconf experience.

I have been sick for about 2 weeks now hence haven t written. I had joint pains and still am weak. There has been lot of reports of malaria, chikungunya and dengue fever around the city. The only thing I came to know is how lucky I am to be able to move around on 2 legs and how powerless and debilitating it feels when you can t move. In the interim I saw Me Before You and after going through my most miniscule experience, I could relate with Will Taylor s character. If I was in his place, I would probably make the same choices. But my issues are and were slightly different. Last month I was supposed to share my debconf experience in the local PLUG meet. For that purpose, I took some pictures from my phone on a pen-drive to share. But when reached the venue, found out that I had forgotten to take the pen-drive. What I had also done is used the mogrify command from the imagemagick stable to lossy compress the images on the pen-drive so it is easier on image viewers. But that was not to be and at the last moment had to use my phone plugged into the USB drive of the lappy and show some pictures. This was not good. I had known that it was mounted somewhere but hadn t looked at where. After coming back home, it took me hardly 10 minutes to find out where it was mounted. It is not mounted under /media/shirish but under /run/user/1000/gvfs . If I do list under it shows mtp:host=%5Busb%3A005%2C007%5D . I didn t need any packages under debian to make it work. Interestingly, the only image viewer which seems to be able to work with all the images is feh which is a command-line image viewer in Debian. [$] aptitude show feh

I did try various things to get it to mount under /media/shirish/ but as of date have no luck. Am running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and have enabled USB debugging with help from my friend Akshat . I even changed the /etc/fuse.conf options but even that didn t work. #cat /etc/fuse.conf

At the same time you are able to get the card and phone directories mounted under /media// , in my case /media/shirish would be interested to know. I would like the /etc/fstab to remain as it is. I am using Samsung J5 (unrooted) Btw I tried all the mtpfs packages in Debian testing but without any meaningful change Look forward to tips.

Benjamin Mako Hill: The Boy Who Could Change the World: The Writings of Aaron Swartz

The New Press has published a new collection of Aaron Swartz s writing called The Boy Who Could Change the World: The Writings of Aaron Swartz. I worked with Seth Schoen to introduce and help edit the opening section of book that includes Aaron s writings on free culture, access to information and knowledge, and copyright. Seth and I have put our introduction online under an appropriately free license (CC BY-SA). aaronsw_book_coverOver the last week, I ve read the whole book again. I think the book really is a wonderful snapshot of Aaron s thought and personality. It s got bits that make me roll my eyes, bits that make me want to shout in support, and bits that continue to challenge me. It all makes me miss Aaron terribly. I strongly recommend the book. Because the publication is post-humous, it s meant that folks like me are doing media work for the book. In honor of naming the book their progressive pick of the week, Truthout has also published an interview with me about Aaron and the book. Other folks who introduced and/or edited topical sections in the book are David Auerbach (Computers), David Segal (Politics), Cory Doctorow (Media), James Grimmelmann (Books and Culture), and Astra Taylor (Unschool). The book is introduced by Larry Lessig.

Andrea Veri: Three years and counting

It s been a while since my last what s been happening behind the scenes e-mail so I m here to report on what has been happening within the GNOME Infrastructure, its future plans and my personal sensations about a challenge that started around three (3) years ago when Sriram Ramkrishna and Jeff Schroeder proposed my name as a possible candidate for coordinating the team that runs the systems behind the GNOME Project. All this followed by the official hiring achieved by Karen Sandler back in February 2013. The GNOME Infrastructure has finally reached stability both in terms of reliability and uptime, we didn t have any service disruption this and the past year and services have been running smoothly as they were expected to in a project like the one we are managing. As many of you know service disruptions and a total lack of maintenance were very common before I joined back in 2013, I m so glad the situation has dramatically changed and developers, users, passionates are now able to reach our websites, code repositories, build machines without experiencing slowness, downtimes or
unreachability. Additionally all these groups of people now have a reference point they can contact in case they need help when coping with the infrastructure they daily use. The ticketing system allows users to get in touch with the members of the Sysadmin Team and receive support right away within a very short period of time (Also thanks to Pagerduty, service the Foundation is kindly sponsoring) Before moving ahead to the future plans I d like to provide you a summary of what has been done during these roughly three years so you can get an idea of why I define the changes that happened to the infrastructure a complete revamp:
  1. Recycled several ancient machines migrating services off of them while consolidating them by placing all their configuration on our central configuration management platform ran by Puppet. This includes a grand total of 7 machines that were replaced by new hardware and extended warranties the Foundation kindly sponsored.
  2. We strenghten our websites security by introducing SSL certificates everywhere and recently replacing them with SHA2 certificates.
  3. We introduced several services such as Owncloud, the Commits Bot, the Pastebin, the Etherpad, Jabber, the GNOME Github mirror.
  4. We restructured the way we backup our machines also thanks to the Fedora Project sponsoring the disk space on their backup facility. The way we were used to handle backups drastically changed from early years where a magnetic tape facility was in charge of all the burden of archiving our data to today where a NetApp is used together with rdiff-backup.
  5. We upgraded Bugzilla to the latest release, a huge thanks goes to Krzesimir Nowak who kindly helped us building the migration tools.
  6. We introduced the GNOME Apprentice program open-sourcing our internal Puppet repository and cleansing it (shallow clones FTW!) from any sensitive information which now lives on a different repository with restricted access.
  7. We retired Mango and our OpenLDAP instance in favor of FreeIPA which allows users to modify their account information on their own without waiting for the Accounts Team to process the change.
  8. We documented how our internal tools are customized to play together making it easy for future Sysadmin Team members to learn how the infrastructure works and supersede existing members in case they aren t able to keep up their position anymore.
  9. We started providing hosting to the GIMP and GTK projects which now completely rely on the GNOME Infrastructure. (DNS, email, websites and other services infrastructure hosting)
  10. We started providing hosting not only to the GIMP and GTK projects but to localized communities as well such as GNOME Hispano and GNOME Greece
  11. We configured proper monitoring for all the hosted services thanks to Nagios and Check-MK
  12. We migrated the IRC network to a newer ircd with proper IRC services (Nickserv, Chanserv) in place.
  13. We made sure each machine had a configured management (mgmt) and KVM interface for direct remote access to the bare metal machine itself, its hardware status and all the operations related to it. (hard reset, reboot, shutdown etc.)
  14. We upgraded MoinMoin to the latest release and made a substantial cleanup of old accounts, pages marked as spam and trashed pages.
  15. We deployed DNSSEC for several domains we manage including gnome.org, guadec.es, gnomehispano.es, guadec.org, gtk.org and gimp.org
  16. We introduced an account de-activation policy which comes into play when a contributor not committing to any of the hosted repositories at git.gnome.org since two years is caught by the script. The account in question is marked as inactive and the gnomecvs (from the old cvs days) and ftpadmin groups are removed.
  17. We planned mass reboots of all the machines roughly every month for properly applying security and kernel updates.
  18. We introduced Mirrorbrain (MB), the mirroring service serving GNOME and related modules tarballs and software all over the world. Before introducing MB GNOME had several mirrors located in all the main continents and at the same time a very low amount of users making good use of them. Many organizations and companies behind these mirrors decided to not host GNOME sources anymore as the statistics of usage were very poor and preferred providing the same service to projects that really had a demand for these resources. MB solved all this allowing a proper redirect to the closest mirror (through mod_geoip) and making sure the sources checksum matched across all the mirrors and against the original tarball uploaded by a GNOME maintainer and hosted at master.gnome.org.
I can keep the list going for dozens of other accomplished tasks but I m sure many of you are now more interested in what the future plans actually are in terms of where the GNOME Infrastructure should be in the next couple of years. One of the main topics we ve been discussing will be migrating our Git infrastructure away from cgit (which is mainly serving as a code browsing tool) to a more complete platform that is surely going to include a code review tool of some sort. (Gerrit, Gitlab, Phabricator) Another topic would be migrating our mailing lists to Mailman 3 / Hyperkitty. This also means we definitely need a staging infrastructure in place for testing these kind of transitions ideally bound to a separate Puppet / Ansible repository or branch. Having a different repository for testing purposes will also mean helping apprentices to test their changes directly on a live system and not on their personal computer which might be running a different OS / set of tools than the ones we run on the GNOME Infrastructure. What I also aim would be seeing GNOME Accounts being the only authentication resource in use within the whole GNOME Infrastructure. That means one should be able to login to a specific service with the same username / password in use on the other hosted services. That s been on my todo list for a while already and it s probably time to push it forward together with Patrick Uiterwijk, responsible of Ipsilon s development at Red Hat and GNOME Sysadmin. While these are the top priority items we are soon receiving new hardware (plus extended warranty renewals for two out of the three machines that had their warranty renewed a while back) and migrating some of the VMs off from the current set of machines to the new boxes is definitely another task I d be willing to look at in the next couple of months (one machine (ns-master.gnome.org) is being decommissioned giving me a chance to migrate away from BIND into NSD). The GNOME Infrastructure is evolving and it s crucial to have someone maintaining it. On this side I m bringing to your attention the fact the assigned Sysadmin funds are running out as reported on the Board minutes from the 27th of October. On this side Jeff Fortin started looking for possible sponsors and came up with the idea of making a brochure with a set of accomplished tasks that couldn t have been possible without the Sysadmin fundraising campaign launched by Stormy Peters back in June 2010 being a success. The Board is well aware of the importance of having someone looking at the infrastructure that runs the GNOME Project and is making sure the brochure will be properly reviewed and published. Mirco Bauer: Smuxi 1.0 "Finally" Release

And here we go again! We're proud to announce the new version of Smuxi, release 1.0 "Finally". During the development, 20 bug reports and 10 feature requests in 285 commits were worked on.

Finally 1.0 Smuxi is celebrating its 10th anniversary! 10 years ago, Mirco Bauer made the first commit to the Smuxi source code repository and is still very committed to it. He started the Gnosmirc project in 2005 when the only way a 24/7 "always-on" experience with IRC meant you had to use a console based IRC client like bitchx, irssi or epic combined with screen and SSH. This looks very practical at first and is a powerful Unix-ish way of accomplishing that job, but it has the big downside that it doesn't integrate with a desktop environment like GNOME. A bit later the Gnosmirc project was renamed to Smuxi when the new code architecture allowed other frontend implementations besides the GNOME one. The ncurses/STFL based text frontend was later implemented and is considered stable and useful enough for day to day use, but still has some rough edges. WinForms and WPF frontends also exist but need more work to reach a usable state. At this point Smuxi 1.0 contains all features that we could have imagined and even goes beyond with very advanced features like message patterns or language agnostic scripting.

Changes since Smuxi 0.11

Message Persistence One of the biggest drawbacks of the IRC protocol ever was that messages can't be retrieved from the IRC server because the IRC server is simply relaying messages to the connected clients. So, if an IRC client is freshly started and connects it starts to receive new messages, but all message you had received before are no longer available. This always made IRC in a way "volatile" unlike other communication systems like email where messages are relayed and stored on the client side. One common approach for IRC clients is to store log files in a text file. This is a simple feature and gives the user the possibility to read older conversations. Smuxi also supports text file logging like other IRC clients but it has a big user experience drawback as you need to open the file from the disk outside of the IRC client. In Smuxi 1.0 messages sent and received are now stored on the disk in a way they can automatically be retrieved/loaded when you restart Smuxi. It is like you have never closed Smuxi! This feature was already available in Smuxi for some time as a technical preview and it used the Db4o object database, but we were never happy about the performance neither with the stability so it always stayed an optional feature you need to enable. This year we tried a new message buffer backend using the famous SQLite database and it works much faster and stable as a rock. So finally we can enable this feature by default because it just works and enhanced your experience. We hope you enjoy it. Documentation of how you can change Smuxi message buffer backend and behavior can be found here. For instructions how to convert your existing db4o history to SQLite can be found in the "smuxi-message-buffer tool" section.

User Interface Enhancements
  • Synced message markers: the position of of the seen/unseen messages marker is pushed to the smuxi-server and remembered when the frontend reconnects. (Sebastian Poeplau)
  • Persistent message markers: the message marker position is also remembered across Smuxi(-server) restarts.
  • Message Counter: in addition to the highlight counter next to a chat new/unseen messages are also counted. This makes it easy to identify chats with much traffic.
  • Single application instance support. If you start Smuxi again from the menu it will bring the existing instance into the foreground. This makes the Ubuntu Messaging Menu much nicer.
  • The command/message entry is alignment with the messages. (Lex Berezhny)

Text Frontend Enhancements
  • The console background color can now be configured using: /config set STFL/Interface/TerminalBackgroundColor = #000000 (Ond ej Ho ek)
  • The text color contrast if nicks with the background is now ensured (Ond ej Ho ek) #1033
  • Messages containing images will not be skipped but their alternative text is shown instead (Ond ej Ho ek) #1035

New smuxi-message-buffer tool This is a new commandline tool that allows you to convert and export the message history of Smuxi message buffer files. This can be used to convert your existing Db4o history to SQLite like this for example:

Scripting Enhancements

New Hook Points Smuxi 1.0 supports with the following new hook points:
  • engine/protocol-manager/on-presence-status-changed/ This hook point is raised when the presence status of a protocol manager changes. This happens for example when an IRC connection toggles the away state.
  • engine/session/on-event-message/ This hook point raises event messages that usually begin with "-!-". This can be useful to track state changes that are shown as a message without having a dedicated hook point for it.
  • engine/session/command-$cmd/ This hook point is raised on the engine side for commands, e.g. /some_command that isn't handled by the frontend or engine built-in commands. This is useful for commands that should be available for all frontends and isn't specific to the frontend environment.

New Plugins The following new plugins are supported by Smuxi 1.0:
  • topic-diff: Shows the word differences of the topic after topic changes. (meebey)
  • away-nick: Automatically appends and removes $AWAY_SUFFIX to/from the nick name when you go away using the /away command or by disconnecting all frontends from the smuxi-server. (meebey)

IRC Enhancements
  • NICKSERV support Notices from Nick/ChanServ are no longer shown on all channels as they like to send greeting messages and other spam which is annoying to see on all channels. #868
  • Automatic rejoin of channels protected with a key works as expected again
  • Connecting to irc.gitter.im is now supported. Gitter's IRCd implementation has a bug in the IRC protocol which is now tolerated.

Olivier Berger: New short paper : Designing a virtual laboratory for a relational database MOOC with Vagrant, Debian, etc.

Students now, in general, have personal computers that are powerful enough to support virtualization of operating systems and networks. As a conse- quence, it is now possible to provide remote learners with a common, standard, virtual laboratory and learning environment, independent of the different types of physical machines on which they work. This greatly enhances the opportunity for producing re-usable teaching materials that are actually re-used. We report on our experience of building a virtual machine (VM) laboratory for a MOOC on relational databases. Joey Hess: 7drl 2015 day 2 level generation and game concept

Much as I want to get my @ displayed and moving around screen, last night and today have focused on level generation instead. Scroll has kinda strange level generation method, compared to how I suppose most roguelikes do it. There are only 3 calls to rand in all of Scroll. Just a 3 random parameters, but that's enough to ensure a different level each time.

You could say there are two influences in Scroll's level generation method: Nick Montfort and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
I have thought some about Scroll before starting the 7drl week, but my idea for the game was missing some key concepts. There was nothing to keep the player engaged in moving forward, an unclear victory condition, no clue how to generate appropriate random levels, a large potential for getting stuck, and no way to lose the game. This is all a problem for a roguelike. But, I had an idea finally last night, about a single unified thing that all of that stuff falls out from. And it's right there in the name of the game! Now that I understand Scroll better, I wrote the tutorial level. It's a very meta tutorial level that sets the scene well and serves more purposes than are at first apparent. I count a total of 6 things that this "tutorial level" will let the user do. And interestingly, while the tutorial level is static, it interacts with the rest of the game in a way that will make it be experienced differently every time through.
The strangest line of code I wrote today is:

Finally, after 7 hours of nonstop coding, I got ncurses to display the generated game world, scrolling around in the display viewport. No @ yet; that will need to wait for tonight or tomorrow!

Martin Pitt: Running autopkgtests in the cloud

It s great to see more and more packages in Debian and Ubuntu getting an autopkgtest. We now have some 660, and soon we ll get another ~ 4000 from Perl and Ruby packages. Both Debian s and Ubuntu s autopkgtest runner machines are currently static manually maintained machines which ache under their load. They just don t scale, and at least Ubuntu s runners need quite a lot of handholding. This needs to stop. To quote Tim The Tool Man Taylor: We need more power!. This is a perfect scenario to be put into a cloud with ephemeral VMs to run tests in. They scale, there is no privacy problem, and maintenance of the hosts then becomes Somebody Else s Problem. I recently brushed up autopkgtest s ssh runner and the Nova setup script. Previous versions didn t support revert yet, tests that leaked processes caused eternal hangs due to the way ssh works, and image building wasn t yet supported well. autopkgtest 3.5.5 now gets along with all that and has a dozen other fixes. So let me introduce the Binford 6100 variable horsepower DEP-8 engine python-coated cloud test runner! While you can run adt-run from your home machine, it s probably better to do it from an autopkgtest controller cloud instance as well. Testing frequently requires copying files and built package trees between testbeds and controller, which can be quite slow from home and causes timeouts. The requirements on the controller node are quite low you either need the autopkgtest 3.5.5 package installed (possibly a backport to Debian Wheezy or Ubuntu 12.04 LTS), or run it from git ($checkout_dir/run-from-checkout), and other than that you only need python-novaclient and the usual $OS_* OpenStack environment variables. This controller can also stay running all the time and easily drive dozens of tests in parallel as all the real testing action is happening in the ephemeral testbed VMs. The most important preparation step to do for testing in the cloud is quite similar to testing in local VMs with adt-virt-qemu: You need to have suitable VM images. They should be generated every day so that the tests don t have to spend 15 minutes on dist-upgrading and rebooting, and they should be minimized. They should also be as similar as possible to local VM images that you get with vmdebootstrap or adt-buildvm-ubuntu-cloud, so that test failures can easily be reproduced by developers on their local machines. To address this, I refactored the entire knowledge how to turn a pristine default vmdebootstrap or cloud image into an autopkgtest environment into a single /usr/share/autopkgtest/adt-setup-vm script. adt-buildvm-ubuntu-cloud now uses this, you shold use it with vmdebootstrap --customize (see adt-virt-qemu(1) for details), and it s also easy to run for building custom cloud images: Essentially, you pick a suitable pristine image, nova boot an instance from it, run adt-setup-vm through ssh, then turn this into a new adt specific "daily" image with nova image-create. I wrote a little script create-nova-adt-image.sh to demonstrate and automate this, the only parameter that it gets is the name of the pristine image to base on. This was tested on Canonical's Bootstack cloud, so it might need some adjustments on other clouds. Thus something like this should be run daily (pick the base images from nova image-list):

Finally, let' run the packages from above with using ten VMs in parallel:

After a few iterations of bug fixing there are now only two failures left which are due to flaky tests, the infrastructure now seems to hold up fairly well. Meanwhile, Vincent Ladeuil is working full steam to integrate this new stuff into the next-gen Ubuntu CI engine, so that we can soon deploy and run all this fully automatically in production. Charmian Gooch gave an interesting TED talk about her efforts to fight organised crime and corruption by prohibiting anonymous companies [1]. The idea of a company is to protect the owner from unlimited liability not to protect them from law enforcement. Dr Nerdlove has an insightful article about sexual harassment in geek culture [2]. Rebecca Rose wrote an insightful article for Jezebel about the worse bullying advice ever, her summary is that it should be called Ways We Can Get You Goddamn Kids to Act So We Never Have to Deal With Your Problems Ever [3]. In the wake of the Heardbleed bug Imperial Violet wrote an informative article explaining why revocation checks isn t the solution [4]. Martin Lukacs and Shiri Pasternak wrote an insightful article about the Canadian government s attempts to stop Canadian aboriginies from exercising their legal rights [5]. I bet that the Australian government is doing the same things. Nelson Groom wrote an interesting interview with Norrie May Welby, the first recognised agender person in Australia [6]. Marriage equality is bound to happen soon in Australia, now that the government officially recognises non-binary gender people it can t refuse them the right to get married and therefore the straight/gay marriage distinction isn t relevant. BDA Technology has an interesting article on choosing fonts to make text more readable for dyslexic people [7]. Eamon Waterford wrote an informative article for the ABC about how early-intervention social policies save significant amounts of tax money [8]. Conservatives claim to want to save money and try to cut such programs which costs everyone in the long term. Greta Christina wrote an insightful article for Salon about why religious people want atheists to lie and pretend to believe [9]. Chris Mooney wrote an informative URL about a machine to test whether someone is liberal or conservative [10]. Paul Rosenberg wrote an informative article on the link between conservatism, evil, and psychopathy [11]. The next logical step is to treat conservatism as a mental health problem. Sociological Images has an interesting article by Jay Livingston about the hypocrisy of conservative tax policies [12]. Scientific American reprinted an article from The Conversation by Elaine McKewon about the climate deniers who intimidated a journal into retracting an article about their belief in conspiracy theories [13]. It seems obvious that the climate deniers are the ones who conspire. Ben Caldecott wrote an interesting article for the ABC about the fossil fuel divestment campaign [14]. It seems that this is getting some success already, as renewable energy will soon be cheaper than coal power this could kill off coal. Mark Taylor wrote an interesting blog post titled Observations of an Internet Middleman about the operations of Level3 and Internet peering [15]. He explains how monopoly Telcos throttle their customers Internet access. Matt Savoy wrote an informative and disturbing article about the fact that US cops are twice as likely to beat their wives as the general population [16]. Apparently the police hierarchy aren t interested in prosecuting such crimes. Paul Rosenberg wrote an insightful article about mythos vs logos and the conservative approach to relity [17]. One interesting point he makes is that white men (and members of privileged groups generally) fear a loss of status more than more realistic concerns (such as global warming). Nick wrote an interesting blog post about using GPG encrypted email on an Android phone [18]. I should get this going on my phone.

This GUADEC there will be a couple of sessions on Friday afternoon from 2pm about Wayland. I ll be giving a presentation with a brief introduction to what Wayland is, what new features we ve worked on in the last cycle as well as what s planned for the next one. As this is GUADEC i ll of course be covering how we re doing with getting Wayland integrated into GNOME. There will also be a Wayland panel discussion where you can ask your tricky questions of myself, Owen Taylor, Robert Bragg and Kristian H gsberg to get things started i ve got some already prepared! Keith Packard: present-redirect

Present Extension Redirection Multi-buffered applications have always behaved poorly in the presence of the Composite extension: Owen Taylor suggested that Present should offer a way to redirect operations to the compositing manager as a way to solve these problems. This posting is my attempt to make that idea a bit more concrete given the current Present design. Design Goals Here s a list of features I think we should try to provide:
  1. Provide accurate information to applications about when presentation to the screen actually occurs. In particular, GLX applications using GLX_OML_sync_control should receive the correct information in terms of UST and MSC for each Swap Buffers request.
  2. Ensure that applications still receive correct information as to the contents of their buffers, in particular we want to be able to implement EGL_EXT_buffer_age in a useful manner.
  3. Avoid needing to un-redirect full-screen windows to get page flipping behavior.
  4. Eliminate all extra copies. A windowed application may still perform one copy from back buffer to scanout buffer, but there shouldn t be any reason to copy contents to the composite redirection buffer or the compositing manager back buffer.
Simple Present Redirection With those goals in mind, here s what I see as the sequence of events for a simple windowed application doing a new full-window update without any translucency or window transformation in effect:
  1. Application creates back buffer, draws new frame to it.
  2. Application executes PresentRegion. In this example, the valid and update parameters are None , indicating that the full window should be redrawn.
  3. The server captures the PresentRegion request and constructs a PresentRedirectNotify event containing sufficient information for the compositor to place that image correctly on the screen:
    • target window for the presentation
    • source pixmap containing the new image
    • idle fence to notify when the source pixmap is no longer in use.
    • serial number from the request.
    • target MSC for the presentation. This should probably just be the computed absolute MSC value, and not the original target/divisor/numerator values provided by the application.
  4. The compositing manager receives this event and constructs a new PresentRegion request using the provided source pixmap, but this time targeting the root window, and constructing a valid region which clips the pixmap to the shape of the window on the screen. This request would use the original application s idle fence value so that when complete, the application would get notified. This request would need to also include the original target window and serial number so that a suitable PresentCompleteNotify event can be constructed and delivered when the final presentation is complete.
  5. The server executes this new PresentRegion operation. When complete, it delivers PresentCompleteNotify events to both the compositing manager and the application.
  6. Once the source pixmap is no longer in use (either the copy has completed, or the screen has flipped away from this pixmap), the server triggers the idle fence.
Multiple Application Redirection If multiple applications perform PresentRegion operations within the same frame, then the compositing manager will receive multiple PresentRedirectNotify events, and can simply construct multiple new PresentRegion requests. If these are all queued to the same global MSC, they will execute at the same frame boundary. No inter-operation dependency exists here. Complex Presentations Ok, so the simple case looks like it s pretty darn simple to implement, and satisfies the design goals nicely. Let s look at a couple of more complicated cases in common usage; the first is with translucency, the second with scaling application images down to thumbnails and the third with partial application window updates. Redirection with Translucency If the compositing manager discovers that a portion of the updated region overlays or is overlaid by something translucent (either another window, or drop shadows, or something else), then a composite image for that area must be constructed before the whole can be presented. Starting when the compositing manager receives the event, we have:
  1. The compositing manager receives this event. Using the new pixmap, along with pixmaps for the other involved windows and graphical elements, the compositing manager constructs an updated view for the affected portion of the screen in a back buffer pixmap. Once complete, a PresentRegion operation that uses this back buffer pixmap is sent to the X server. Again, the original target window and serial number are also delivered to the server so that a suitable PresentCompleteNotify event can be delivered to the application.
  2. The server executes this new PresentRegion operation; PresentCompleteNotify events are delivered, and idle fences triggered as appropriate.
Redirection with Transformation Transformation of the window contents means that we cannot always update a portion of the back buffer directly from the provided application pixmap as that will not contain the window border. Contents generated from a region that includes both application pixels and window border pixels must be sourced from a single pixmap containing both sets of pixels. One option that I ve discussed in the past to solve this would be to have the original application allocate the pixmap large enough to hold both the application contents and the surrounding window border. Have it draw the application contents at the correct offset within this pixmap, and then have the window manager contents drawn around that; either automatically by the X server, or even manually by the compositing manager. That would be mighty convenient for the compositing manager, but would require significant additional infrastructure throughout the X server and even harder the drawing system (OpenGL or some other system). There s another reason to want this though, and that s for sub-frame buffer scanout page swapping. The second option would be for the compositing manager to combine these images itself; there s a nice pixmap already containing the window manager image the composite redirect buffer. Taking the provided source pixmap and copying it directly to the target window will construct our composite image, just as if we had no Present redirection in place. This will cost an additional copy though, which we ve promised to avoid. Of course, as it s just for thumb-nailing or other visual effects, perhaps the compositing manager could perform this operation at a reduced frame rate, so that overall system performance didn t suffer. Retaining Access to the Application Buffer Above, I discussed having the idle fence from the redirected PresentRegion operation be sent along with the replacement PresentRegion operation. This ignores the fact that the composting manager may well need the contents of that application frame again in the future, when displaying changes for other applications that involve the same region of the screen. With the goal of making sure the idle fences are triggered as soon as possible so that applications can re-use or free the buffers quickly, let s think about when the triggering can occur.
  1. Full-screen flipped applications. In this case, the application s idle fence can be triggered once the application provides a new frame and the X server has flipped to that new frame, or some other scanout buffer.
  2. Windowed, copied applications. In this case, the application s idle fence can be triggered once the application provides a new frame to the compositing manager, and the X server doesn t have any presentations queued.
In both cases, we require that both the X server and the compositing manager be finished with the buffer before the application s idle fence should be triggered. One easy way to get this behavior is for the composting manager to create a new idle fence for its operations. When that is triggered, it would receive an X event and then trigger the applications idle fence as appropriate. This would add considerable latency to the application s idle fence a round trip through the compositing manager. The alternative would be to construct some additional protocol to make the applications idle fence dependent on the Present operation and some additional state provided by the compositing manager. Some experimentation here is warranted, but my experience with latency in this area is that it causes applications to end up allocating another back buffer as the idle notification arrives just after a buffer allocation request comes down to the rendering library. Definitely sub-optimal. An Aside on Media Stream Counters The GLX_OML_sync_control extension defines the Media Stream Counter (MSC) as a counter unique to the graphics subsystem which is incremented each time a vertical retrace occurs. That would be trivial if we had only one vertical retrace sequence in the world. However, we actually have N+1 such counters, one for each of the N active monitors in the system and a separate fake counter to be used when none of the other counters is available. In the current Present implementation, windows transition among the various Media Stream Counter domains as they move between the various monitors, and those monitors get turned on and off. As they move between these counter domains, Present tracks a global offset from their original domain. This offset ensures that the MSC value remains monotonically increasing as seen by each window. What it does not ensure is that all windows have comparable MSC sequence values; two windows on the same monitor may well have different MSC values for the same physical retrace event. And, even moving a window from one MSC domain to another and back won t make it return to the original MSC sequence values due to differences in refresh rates between the monitors. Internally, Present asserts that each CRTC in the system identifies a unique MSC domain, and it has a driver API which identifies which CRTC a particular window should be associated with. Once a particular CRTC has been identified for a window, client-relative MSC values and CRTC-relative MSC values can be exchanged using an offset between that CRTC MSC domain and the window MSC domain. The Intel driver assigns CRTCs to windows by picking the CRTC showing the greatest number of pixels for a particular window. When two CRTCs show the same number of pixels, the Intel driver picks the first in the list. Vblank Synchronization and Multiple Monitors Ok, so each window lives in a particular MSC domain, clocked by the MSC of the CRTC the driver has associated it with. In an un-composited world, this makes picking when to update the screen pretty simple; Present updates the screen when vblank happens in the CRTC associated with the window. In the composite redirected case, it s a bit harder all of the PresentRegion operations are going to target the root window, and yet we want updates for each window to be synchronized with the monitor containing that window. Of course, the root window belongs to a single MSC domain (likely the largest monitor, using the selection algorithm described above from the Intel driver). So, any PresentRegion requests will be timed relative to that single monitor. I think what is required here is for the PresentRegion extension to take an optional CRTC argument, which would then be used as the MSC domain instead of the window MSC domain. All of the timing arguments would be interpreted relative to that CRTC MSC domain. The PresentRedirectNotify event would then contain the relevant CRTC and the MSC value would be relative to that CRTC. A clever Compositing manager could then decompose a global PresentRegion operation into per-CRTC PresentRegion operations and ensure that multiple monitors were all synchronized correctly. We could take this even further and have the PresentRegion capable of passing a smaller CRTC-sized pixmap down to the kernel, effectively providing per-CRTC pixmaps with no visible explicit protocol Other Composite Users Ok, so the above discussion is clearly focused on getting the correct contents onto the screen with minimal copies along the way. However, what I ve ignored is how to deal with other applications, also using Composite at the same time. They re all going to expect that the composite redirect buffers will contain correct window contents at all times, and yet we ve just spent a bunch of time making that not be the case to avoid copying data into those buffers and instead copying directly to the compositing manager back or front buffers. Obviously the X server is aware of when this happens; the compositing manager will have selected for manual redirection on all top-level windows, while our other application will have only been able to select for automatic redirection. So, we ve got two pretty clear choices here:
  1. Have the X server change how Present redirection works when some other application selects for Automatic redirection on a window. It would copy the source pixmap into the window buffer and then send (a modified?) PresentRedirectNotify event to the compositing manager.
  2. Include a flag in the PresentRedirectNotify event that the composite redirect buffer needs to eventually get the contents of the source pixmap, and then expect the compositing manager to figure out what to do.
Development Plans As usual, I m going to pick the path of least resistance for all of the above options and see how things look; where the easy thing works, we can keep using it. Where the easy thing fails, I ll try something else. The changes required for this are pretty minimal. The PresentRegion request needs to gain a list of window/serial pairs that are also to be notified when the operation completes:

The target-crtc parameter explicitly identifies a CRTC MSC domain. If None, then this request implicitly uses the window MSC domain. notifies provides a list of windows that will also receive PresentCompleteNotify events with the associated serial number when this PresentRegion operation completes.

The target-crtc identifies which CRTC MSC domain the target-msc value relates to. divisor and remainder have been removed as the target-msc value has been adjusted using the application values. If update-window is True, then the recipient of this event is instructed to provide reasonably up-to-date contents directly to the window by copying the contents of pixmap to the window manually. Beyond these two protocol changes, the compositing manager is expected to receive Sync events when the idle-fence is triggered and then manually perform a Sync operation to trigger the client s idle-fence when appropriate. I m planning to work on these changes, and then go re-work xcompmgr (or perhaps unagi, which certainly looks less messy) to incorporate support for Present redirection. The goal is to have something to demonstrate at Guadec, which doesn t seem impossible, aside from leaving on vacation in four days

Composite and Swap Getting it Right Where the author tries to make sure DRI3000 is going to do what we want now and in the future DRI3000 The basic DRI3000 plan seems pretty straightforward:
  1. Have applications allocate buffers full of new window contents, attach pixmap IDs to those buffers and pass them to the X server to get them onto the screen.
  2. Provide a mechanism to let applications know when those pixmaps are idle so that they can reuse them instead of creating new ones for every frame.
  3. Finally, allow the actual presentation of the contents to be scheduled for a suitable time in the future, generally synchronized with the monitor. Let the client know when this has happened in case they want to synchronize themselves to vblank.
The DRI3 extension provides a way to associate pixmap IDs and buffers, and given the MIT-SHM prototype I ve already implemented, I think we can safely mark this part as demonstrably implementable. That leaves us with a smaller problem, that of taking pixmap contents and presenting them on the screen at a suitable time and telling applications about the progress of that activity. In the absence of compositing, I m pretty sure the initial Swap extension design would do this job just fine, and should resolve some of the known DRI2 limitations related to buffer management. And, I think that goal is sufficient motivation to go and implement that. However, I wanted to write up some further ideas to see if the DRI3000 plan can be made to do precisely what we want in a composited world. The Composited Goal To make sure we re all on the same page, here s what I expect from the Swap extension in a composited world:
  1. Application calls Swap with new window pixmap
  2. Compositor hears about the new pixmap and uses that to construct a new screen pixmap
  3. Compositor calls Swap with new screen pixmap
  4. Vertical retrace happens, executing the pending swap operation
  5. Compositor hears about the swap completion for the screen
  6. Application hears about the swap completion for its window
In particular, applications should not hear that their swap operations are complete until the contents appear on the screen. This allows for applications to throttle themselves to the screen rate, either doing double or triple buffering as they choose. I didn t add steps here indicating buffers going idle or being allocated, because I think that should all happen behind the scenes from the application s perspective. Many applications won t care about the swap completion notification either, but some will and so that needs to be visible. Redirected Swaps? Owen Taylor suggested that one way of getting the compositor involved would be to have it somehow redirect Swap operations, much like we do with window management operations today. I think that idea may be a good direction to try:
  1. Application calls Swap with new window pixmap
  2. Swap is redirected to compositor, passing along the new window pixmap
  3. Compositor constructs a new screen pixmap using the new window pixmap
  4. Compositor calls Swap on the screen and the window, passing the new screen pixmap and the new window pixmap. When the screen update occurs, the screen and the window both receive swap completion events.
This has the added benefit that the X server knows when the compositor is expecting window pixmaps to change like this the compositor has to explicitly request Swap redirection. Window Pixmap Names and GEM Buffer Handles One issue that swapping window pixmaps around like this brings up is how to manage existing names for the window pixmap. Right now, applications expect that window pixmaps will only change when the window is resized. If the Swap extension is going to actually replace the window pixmap when running with a suitable compositor, then we need to figure out what the old names will reference. Are there non-compositor applications using NameWindowPixmap that matter to us? How about non-compositor applications using TextureFromPixmap to get a GEM handle for a window pixmap? For now, I m very tempted to just break stuff and see who complains, but knowing what we re breaking might be nice beforehand. Idling Pixmaps When an application is done drawing to a window pixmap and has passed it off to the X server for presentation, we d like for that pixmap to be automatically marked as discardable as soon as possible. This way, when memory is tight, the kernel can come steal those pages for something critical. Of course, applications may not want to let the server mark the pixmap as idle after being used, so a flag to the Swap call would be needed. Ideally, the pixmap would become idle immediately after the pixmap contents have been extracted. In the absence of a compositor, that would probably be when the Swap operation completes. With a compositor running, we d need explicit instruction from the compositor telling us that the window pixmap was now idle :

Furthermore, the application needs to know that the pixmap is in fact idle. I think that we ll need a synchronous X request that marks a buffer as no longer idle and have that return whether the buffer was discarded while idle. It doesn t seem sufficient to use events here as the application will need to completely reconstruct the pixmap contents in this case. This reply could also contain information about precisely what contents the pixmap does contain.

Pixmap Lifetimes and Triple Buffered Applications If we redirect the Swap operation and send the original application window pixmap ID to the compositor, what happens when the application frees that pixmap before the compositor gets around to using the contents? Surely the Compositor must handle such cases, and not just crash. However, I m fine with requiring that the application not free the pixmap until told by the compositor.
