John Goerzen: Facebook is Censoring Stories about Climate Change and Illegal Raid in Marion, Kansas

It is, sadly, not entirely surprising that Facebook is censoring articles critical of Meta. The Kansas Reflector published an artical about Meta censoring environmental articles about climate change deeming them too controversial . Facebook then censored the article about Facebook censorship, and then after an independent site published a copy of the climate change article, Facebook censored it too. The CNN story says Facebook apologized and said it was a mistake and was fixing it. Color me skeptical, because today I saw this: Yes, that s right: today, April 6, I get a notification that they removed a post from August 12. The notification was dated April 4, but only showed up for me today. I wonder why my post from August 12 was fine for nearly 8 months, and then all of a sudden, when the same website runs an article critical of Facebook, my 8-month-old post is a problem. Hmm. Riiiiiight. Cybersecurity. This isn t even the first time they ve done this to me. On September 11, 2021, they removed my post about the social network Mastodon (click that link for screenshot). A post that, incidentally, had been made 10 months prior to being removed. While they ultimately reversed themselves, I subsequently wrote Facebook s Blocking Decisions Are Deliberate Including Their Censorship of Mastodon. That this same pattern has played out a second time again with something that is a very slight challenege to Facebook seems to validate my conclusion. Facebook lets all sort of hateful garbage infest their site, but anything about climate change or their own censorship gets removed, and this pattern persists for years. There s a reason I prefer Mastodon these days. You can find me there as @jgoerzen@floss.social. So. I ve written this blog post. And then I m going to post it to Facebook. Russell Coker: Links March 2024

Bruce Schneier wrote an interesting blog post about his workshop on reimagining democracy and the unusual way he structured it [1]. It would be fun to have a security conference run like that! Matthias write an informative blog post about Wayland Wayland really breaks things Just for now which links to a blog debate about the utility of Wayland [2]. Wayland seems pretty good to me. Cory Doctorow wrote an insightful article about the AI bubble comparing it to previous bubbles [3]. Charles Stross wrote an insightful analysis of the implications if the UK brought back military conscription [4]. Looks like the era of large armies is over. Charles Stross wrote an informative blog post about the Worldcon in China, covering issues of vote rigging for location, government censorship vs awards, and business opportunities [5]. The Paris Review has an interesting article about speaking to the CIA s Creative Writing Group [6]. It doesn t explain why they have a creative writing group that has some sort of semi-official sanction. LongNow has an insightful article about the threats to biodiversity in food crops and the threat that poses to humans [7]. Bruce Schneier and Albert Fox Cahn wrote an interesting article about the impacts of chatbots on human discourse [8]. If it makes people speak more precisely then that would be great for all Autistic people!

Antoine Beaupr : router archeology: the Soekris net5001

Roadkiller was a Soekris net5501 router I used as my main gateway between 2010 and 2016 (for r seau and t l phone). It was upgraded to FreeBSD 8.4-p12 (2014-06-06) and pkgng. It was retired in favor of octavia around 2016. Roughly 10 years later (2024-01-24), I found it in a drawer and, to my surprised, it booted. After wrangling with a RS-232 USB adapter, a null modem cable, and bit rates, I even logged in:

Never realized those good old logs had a "oh dear forgot the year" issue (that's something like Y2K except just "Y", I guess). That was probably 2015, because the log dates from 2017, and the last entry is from November of the year after the above:

I'll finally note this was the last FreeBSD server I personally operated. I also used FreeBSD to setup the core routers at Koumbit but those were replaced with Debian recently as well. Thanks Soekris, that was some sturdy hardware. Hopefully this new Protectli router will live up to that "decade plus" challenge. Not sure what the fate of this device will be: I'll bring it to the next Montreal Debian & Stuff to see if anyone's interested, contact me if you can't show up and want this thing.

Jonathan Dowland: Two reissued Coil LPs

Happy 2024! DAIS have continued their programme of posthumous Coil remasters and re-issues. Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil was remastered by Josh Bonati in 2021 and re-released in 2022 in a dizzying array of different packaging variants. The original releases in 2000 had barely any artwork, and given that void I think Nathaniel Young has done a great job of creating something compelling.

A limited number of the original re-issue have special lenticular covers, although these were not sold by any distributors outside the US. I tried to find a copy on my trip to Portland in 2022, to no avail. Last year DAIS followed Constant with Queens Of The Circulating Library, same deal: limited lenticular covers, US only. Both are also available digital-only, e.g. on Bandcamp: Constant , Queens . The original, pre-remastered releases have been freely available on archive.org for a long time: Constant , Queens Both of these releases feel to me that they were made available by the group somewhat as an afterthought, having been produced primarily as part of their live efforts. (I'm speculating freely here, it might not be true). Live takes of some of this material exist in the form of Coil Presents Time Machines, which has not (yet) been reissued. In my opinion this is a really compelling recording. I vividly remember listening to this whilst trying to get an hour's rest in a hotel somewhere on a work trip. It took me to some strange places! I'll leave you from one of my favourite moments from "Colour Sound Oblivion", Coil's video collection of live backdrops. When this was performed live it was also called "Constant Shallowness Leads To Evil", although it's distinct from the material on the LP: also available on archive.org. Matthew Garrett: Dealing with weird ELF libraries

Libraries are collections of code that are intended to be usable by multiple consumers (if you're interested in the etymology, watch this video). In the old days we had what we now refer to as "static" libraries, collections of code that existed on disk but which would be copied into newly compiled binaries. We've moved beyond that, thankfully, and now make use of what we call "dynamic" or "shared" libraries - instead of the code being copied into the binary, a reference to the library function is incorporated, and at runtime the code is mapped from the on-disk copy of the shared object[1]. This allows libraries to be upgraded without needing to modify the binaries using them, and if multiple applications are using the same library at once it only requires that one copy of the code be kept in RAM.

But for this to work, two things are necessary: when we build a binary, there has to be a way to reference the relevant library functions in the binary; and when we run a binary, the library code needs to be mapped into the process.

(I'm going to somewhat simplify the explanations from here on - things like symbol versioning make this a bit more complicated but aren't strictly relevant to what I was working on here)

For the first of these, the goal is to replace a call to a function (eg, printf()) with a reference to the actual implementation. This is the job of the linker rather than the compiler (eg, if you use the -c argument to tell gcc to simply compile to an object rather than linking an executable, it's not going to care about whether or not every function called in your code actually exists or not - that'll be figured out when you link all the objects together), and the linker needs to know which symbols (which aren't just functions - libraries can export variables or structures and so on) are available in which libraries. You give the linker a list of libraries, it extracts the symbols available, and resolves the references in your code with references to the library.

But how is that information extracted? Each ELF object has a fixed-size header that contains references to various things, including a reference to a list of "section headers". Each section has a name and a type, but the ones we're interested in are .dynstr and .dynsym. .dynstr contains a list of strings, representing the name of each exported symbol. .dynsym is where things get more interesting - it's a list of structs that contain information about each symbol. This includes a bunch of fairly complicated stuff that you need to care about if you're actually writing a linker, but the relevant entries for this discussion are an index into .dynstr (which means the .dynsym entry isn't sufficient to know the name of a symbol, you need to extract that from .dynstr), along with the location of that symbol within the library. The linker can parse this information and obtain a list of symbol names and addresses, and can now replace the call to printf() with a reference to libc instead.

(Note that it's not possible to simply encode this as "Call this address in this library" - if the library is rebuilt or is a different version, the function could move to a different location)

Experimentally, .dynstr and .dynsym appear to be sufficient for linking a dynamic library at build time - there are other sections related to dynamic linking, but you can link against a library that's missing them. Runtime is where things get more complicated.

When you run a binary that makes use of dynamic libraries, the code from those libraries needs to be mapped into the resulting process. This is the job of the runtime dynamic linker, or RTLD[2]. The RTLD needs to open every library the process requires, map the relevant code into the process's address space, and then rewrite the references in the binary into calls to the library code. This requires more information than is present in .dynstr and .dynsym - at the very least, it needs to know the list of required libraries.

There's a separate section called .dynamic that contains another list of structures, and it's the data here that's used for this purpose. For example, .dynamic contains a bunch of entries of type DT_NEEDED - this is the list of libraries that an executable requires. There's also a bunch of other stuff that's required to actually make all of this work, but the only thing I'm going to touch on is DT_HASH. Doing all this re-linking at runtime involves resolving the locations of a large number of symbols, and if the only way you can do that is by reading a list from .dynsym and then looking up every name in .dynstr that's going to take some time. The DT_HASH entry points to a hash table - the RTLD hashes the symbol name it's trying to resolve, looks it up in that hash table, and gets the symbol entry directly (it still needs to resolve that against .dynstr to make sure it hasn't hit a hash collision - if it has it needs to look up the next hash entry, but this is still generally faster than walking the entire .dynsym list to find the relevant symbol). There's also DT_GNU_HASH which fulfills the same purpose as DT_HASH but uses a more complicated algorithm that performs even better. .dynamic also contains entries pointing at .dynstr and .dynsym, which seems redundant but will become relevant shortly.

So, .dynsym and .dynstr are required at build time, and both are required along with .dynamic at runtime. This seems simple enough, but obviously there's a twist and I'm sorry it's taken so long to get to this point.

I bought a Synology NAS for home backup purposes (my previous solution was a single external USB drive plugged into a small server, which had uncomfortable single point of failure properties). Obviously I decided to poke around at it, and I found something odd - all the libraries Synology ships were entirely lacking any ELF section headers. This meant no .dynstr, .dynsym or .dynamic sections, so how was any of this working? nm asserted that the libraries exported no symbols, and readelf agreed. If I wrote a small app that called a function in one of the libraries and built it, gcc complained that the function was undefined. But executables on the device were clearly resolving the symbols at runtime, and if I loaded them into ghidra the exported functions were visible. If I dlopen()ed them, dlsym() couldn't resolve the symbols - but if I hardcoded the offset into my code, I could call them directly.

Things finally made sense when I discovered that if I passed the --use-dynamic argument to readelf, I did get a list of exported symbols. It turns out that ELF is weirder than I realised. As well as the aforementioned section headers, ELF objects also include a set of program headers. One of the program header types is PT_DYNAMIC. This typically points to the same data that's present in the .dynamic section. Remember when I mentioned that .dynamic contained references to .dynsym and .dynstr? This means that simply pointing at .dynamic is sufficient, there's no need to have separate entries for them.

The same information can be reached from two different locations. The information in the section headers is used at build time, and the information in the program headers at run time[3]. I do not have an explanation for this. But if the information is present in two places, it seems obvious that it should be able to reconstruct the missing section headers in my weird libraries? So that's what this does. It extracts information from the DYNAMIC entry in the program headers and creates equivalent section headers.

There's one thing that makes this more difficult than it might seem. The section header for .dynsym has to contain the number of symbols present in the section. And that information doesn't directly exist in DYNAMIC - to figure out how many symbols exist, you're expected to walk the hash tables and keep track of the largest number you've seen. Since every symbol has to be referenced in the hash table, once you've hit every entry the largest number is the number of exported symbols. This seemed annoying to implement, so instead I cheated, added code to simply pass in the number of symbols on the command line, and then just parsed the output of readelf against the original binaries to extract that information and pass it to my tool.

Somehow, this worked. I now have a bunch of library files that I can link into my own binaries to make it easier to figure out how various things on the Synology work. Now, could someone explain (a) why this information is present in two locations, and (b) why the build-time linker and run-time linker disagree on the canonical source of truth?

Jonathan Dowland: bndcmpr

Last year I put together a Halloween playlist and tried, where possible, to link to the tracks on Bandcamp. At the time, Bandcamp did not offer a Playlist feature; they've since added one, but it's limited to mobile only (and I've found, not a lot of use there either). (I also provided a Spotify playlist. Not all of the tracks in the playlist were available on Spotify, or Bandcamp.) Since then I discovered an independent service bndcmpr which lets you build and share playlists from tracks hosted on Bandcamp. I'm not sure whether it will have longevity, but for now at least, I've ported my Halloween 2022 playlist over to bndcmpr. Arturo Borrero Gonz lez: New job at Spryker

Post logo Last month, in October 2023, I started a new job as a Senior Site Reliability Engineer at the Germany-headquartered technology company Spryker. They are primarily focused on e-commerce and infrastructure businesses. I joined this company with excitement and curiosity, as I would be working with a new technology stack: AWS and Terraform. I had not been directly exposed to them in the past, but I was aware of the vast industry impact of both. Suddenly, things like PXE boot, NIC firmware, and Linux kernel upgrades are mostly AWS problems. This is a full-time, 100% remote job position. I m writing this post one month into the new position, and all I can say is that the onboarding was smooth, and I found some good people in my team. Prior to joining Spryker, I was a Senior SRE at the Wikimedia Cloud Services team at the Wikimedia Foundation. I had been there since 2017, for 6 years. It was a privilege working there.

Petter Reinholdtsen: New and improved sqlcipher in Debian for accessing Signal database

For a while now I wanted to have direct access to the Signal database of messages and channels of my Desktop edition of Signal. I prefer the enforced end to end encryption of Signal these days for my communication with friends and family, to increase the level of safety and privacy as well as raising the cost of the mass surveillance government and non-government entities practice these days. In August I came across a nice recipe on how to use sqlcipher to extract statistics from the Signal database explaining how to do this. Unfortunately this did not work with the version of sqlcipher in Debian. The sqlcipher package is a "fork" of the sqlite package with added support for encrypted databases. Sadly the current Debian maintainer announced more than three years ago that he did not have time to maintain sqlcipher, so it seemed unlikely to be upgraded by the maintainer. I was reluctant to take on the job myself, as I have very limited experience maintaining shared libraries in Debian. After waiting and hoping for a few months, I gave up the last week, and set out to update the package. In the process I orphaned it to make it more obvious for the next person looking at it that the package need proper maintenance. The version in Debian was around five years old, and quite a lot of changes had taken place upstream into the Debian maintenance git repository. After spending a few days importing the new upstream versions, realising that upstream did not care much for SONAME versioning as I saw library symbols being both added and removed with minor version number changes to the project, I concluded that I had to do a SONAME bump of the library package to avoid surprising the reverse dependencies. I even added a simple autopkgtest script to ensure the package work as intended. Dug deep into the hole of learning shared library maintenance, I set out a few days ago to upload the new version to Debian experimental to see what the quality assurance framework in Debian had to say about the result. The feedback told me the pacakge was not too shabby, and yesterday I uploaded the latest version to Debian unstable. It should enter testing today or tomorrow, perhaps delayed by a small library transition. Armed with a new version of sqlcipher, I can now have a look at the SQL database in ~/.config/Signal/sql/db.sqlite. First, one need to fetch the encryption key from the Signal configuration using this simple JSON extraction command:

Russell Coker: Bluetooth Versions and PineTime

I ve done some tests with the PineTime [1] on different Android phones. On a Huawei Mate 10 Pro (from 2017 with Bluetooth 4.2) it has very slow transfer speeds for updating the firmware (less than 1KB/s) and unreliable connection to the phone. On a Huawei Nova 7i (from 2020 with Bluetooth 4.2) it has slow transfer speeds (about 2KB/s) and a more reliable connection to the phone. On a Pixel 4 XL (from 2019 with Bluetooth 5.0) it has very fast speeds for updating the firmware and also a reliable link. Version 5 of the Bluetooth standard [2] was released in 2016 so it s a little disappointing that the Mate 10 Pro doesn t support it and very disappointing that the Nova 7i doesn t support it either. Bluetooth 5 adds higher speeds and longer range for LE (Low Energy) modes which are used for things like smart watches. It s extremely disappointing that the PinePhonePro [3] only supports Bluetooth 4.1. It s a phone released in 2021 that doesn t even have Bluetooth 4.2 which was released in 2014. For laptops the Thinkpad X1 Carbon 7th Gen release in 2019 [4] was the first in the X1 Carbon series to have Bluetooth 5. So I will probably be limited in my ability to use my personal laptop or PinePhone for testing Linux software that talks to the PineTime and I ll have to use a laptop borrowed from work.

Wouter Verhelst: Perl test suites in GitLab

I've been maintaining a number of Perl software packages recently. There's SReview, my video review and transcoding system of which I split off Media::Convert a while back; and as of about a year ago, I've also added PtLink, an RSS aggregator (with future plans for more than just that). All these come with extensive test suites which can help me ensure that things continue to work properly when I play with things; and all of these are hosted on salsa.debian.org, Debian's gitlab instance. Since we're there anyway, I configured GitLab CI/CD to run a full test suite of all the software, so that I can't forget, and also so that I know sooner rather than later when things start breaking. GitLab has extensive support for various test-related reports, and while it took a while to be able to enable all of them, I'm happy to report that today, my perl test suites generate all three possible reports. They are: Additionally, I also store the native perl Devel::Cover report as job artifacts, as they show some information that GitLab does not. It's important to recognize that not all data is useful. For instance, the JUnit report allows for a test name and for details of the test. However, the module that generates the JUnit report from TAP test suites does not make a distinction here; both the test name and the test details are reported as the same. Additionally, the time a test took is measured as the time between the end of the previous test and the end of the current one; there is no "start" marker in the TAP protocol. That being said, it's still useful to see all the available information in GitLab. And it's not even all that hard to do:

Let's expand on that a bit. The first three lines should be clear for anyone who's used GitLab CI/CD in the past. We create a job called test; we start it in the test stage, and we run it in the perl:latest docker image. Nothing spectacular here. The coverage line contains a regular expression. This is applied by GitLab to the output of the job; if it matches, then the first bracket match is extracted, and whatever that contains is assumed to contain the code coverage percentage for the code; it will be reported as such in the GitLab UI for the job that was ran, and graphs may be drawn to show how the coverage changes over time. Additionally, merge requests will show the delta in the code coverage, which may help deciding whether to accept a merge request. This regular expression will match on a line of that the cover program will generate on standard output. The before_script section installs various perl modules we'll need later on. First, we intall ExtUtils::Depends. My code uses ExtUtils::MakeMaker, which ExtUtils::Depends depends on (no pun intended); obviously, if your perl code doesn't use that, then you don't need to install it. The next three modules -- Devel::Cover, TAP::Harness::JUnit and Devel::Cover::Report::Cobertura are necessary for the reports, and you should include them if you want to copy what I'm doing. Next, we install declared dependencies, which is probably a good idea for you as well, and then we run perl Makefile.PL, which will generate the Makefile. If you don't use ExtUtils::MakeMaker, update that part to do what your build system uses. That should be fairly straightforward. You'll notice that we don't actually use the Makefile. This is because we only want to run the test suite, which in our case (since these are PurePerl modules) doesn't require us to build the software first. One might consider that this makes the call of perl Makefile.PL useless, but I think it's a useful test regardless; if that fails, then obviously we did something wrong and shouldn't even try to go further. The actual tests are run inside a script snippet, as is usual for GitLab. However we do a bit more than you would normally expect; this is required for the reports that we want to generate. Let's unpack what we do there:
cover -delete
This deletes any coverage database that might exist (e.g., due to caching or some such). We don't actually expect any coverage database, but it doesn't hurt.
HARNESS_PERL_SWITCHES='-MDevel::Cover'
This tells the TAP harness that we want it to load the Devel::Cover addon, which can generate code coverage statistics. It stores that in the cover_db directory, and allows you to generate all kinds of reports on the code coverage later (but we don't do that here, yet).

Runs the actual test suite, with verbose output, shuffling (aka, randomizing) the test suite, and adding the lib directory to perl's include path. This works for us, again, because we don't actually need to compile anything; if you do, then -b (for blib) may be required. ExtUtils::MakeMaker creates a test target in its Makefile, and usually this is how you invoke the test suite. However, it's not the only way to do so, and indeed if you want to generate a JUnit XML report then you can't do that. Instead, in that case, you need to use the prove, so that you can tell it to load the TAP::Harness::JUnit module by way of the --harness option, which will then generate the JUnit XML report. By default, the JUnit XML report is generated in a file junit_output.xml. It's possible to customize the filename for this report, but GitLab doesn't care and neither do I, so I don't. Uploading the JUnit XML format tells GitLab which tests were run and Finally, we invoke the cover script twice to generate two coverage reports; once we generate the default report (which generates HTML files with detailed information on all the code that was triggered in your test suite), and once with the -report cobertura parameter, which generates the cobertura XML format. Once we've generated all our reports, we then need to upload them to GitLab in the right way. The native perl report, which is in the cover_db directory, is uploaded as a regular job artifact, which we can then look at through a web browser, and the two XML reports are uploaded in the correct way for their respective formats. All in all, I find that doing this makes it easier to understand how my code is tested, and why things go wrong when they do.

Matt Brown: 2023 Mid Year Review

I m six months into my journey of building a business which means its time to reflect and review the goals I set for the year.

No further investment in co2mon.nz In March I made the decision to focus on completing the market research for co2mon.nz. The results of that research led to two key conclusions:
  1. Indoor air quality/ventilation is not a problem many people are actively thinking about or looking to spend money to improve.
  2. Even when introduced to the problem and educated about the need, most people are looking for a one-off expense or solution (e.g. the physical monitor) and are much less interested in a monitoring software service.
Based on that, it was clear that this is not an opportunity that I should continue pursuing and I ve put co2mon.nz into maintenance mode. I ve committed to maintaining the infrastructure to support existing customers, but I won t be investing time or energy in developing it further.

Discipline in selecting product opportunities The decision to stop investing more time into co2mon.nz was straightforward given the results of the research, but it was also painful given the time I ve already sunk into it. I hindsight it s clear that my enthusiasm to solve a problem with technology I enjoyed was my driving force rather than a deep understanding of the wants and needs of potential customers. I don t entirely regret trying my luck once - but it s not time efficient and I know that following that pattern again is not a sustainable or viable path to building a successful business. I ve decided to use the following list of questions to bring more discipline to how I evaluate product opportunities in future:
  1. Problem: Is this something that a sizeable number of people are struggling with AND are willing to spend money solving?
  2. Capability: Can I deliver a solution that solves the problem in a reliable and cost-effective way?
  3. Excitement: Am I excited and motivated to invest time in building the solution to this problem?
  4. Trust: Do I have the expertise and experience to be trusted to solve the problem by potential customers?
  5. Execution: Can I package, market and sell that solution in a profitable manner?
My plan is to answer these questions and then make an evaluation of the potential before I commit time to building any part of a product. As an example of how I think that will help, here s what I think the answer to those questions for ventilation monitoring would have been:
  1. Problem: No - as the market research eventually showed.
  2. Capability: Low - The part of the solution which customers primarily value (the hardware) is complex and outside of my core experience. The software I can easily deliver is not where the value is seen.
  3. Excitement: Yes - this was the primary driver of starting the project.
  4. Trust: Low - I m trusted to build software, but cannot claim any specific expertise in air quality and ventilation.
  5. Execution: Low confidence - These skills are not ones I ve exercised a lot in my career to date.
What these answers point to is that identifying the problem alone is not enough. I don t expect every question to have a perfect answer, but I want to hold myself to only pursuing opportunities where there s only one major area of doubt. In this case, even had the market research demonstrated a problem that many customers would pay to solve, there were still some big answers missing to the trust, capability and execution questions. Overall my conclusion is that co2mon.nz was not the ideal business to start my journey with given the number of open questions in the plan. I like to think that conclusion would also have been clear to me six months ago had I taken the time to go through this process then!

Prioritising areas of growth Applying those questions to my other product ideas results in a lot of I don t know yet answers to the problem and capability questions, further reinforcing the lesson that I need to spend more understanding if there is a problem with a viable business model attached in those areas before progressing any of those ideas. Beyond that lesson, a more interesting observation comes from the last question regarding execution. My answers to the first four questions vary between ideas, but my answers to this last question are always the same - I don t have a lot of confidence in my sales and marketing skills to sell a product. That s not a surprise. My career to date has been focused on software development and leadership, I don t have a lot of experience with sales and marketing. The opportunity to grow and develop those skills is actually a large part of my motivation for choosing the path of building my own business. But seeing that this is a common factor that will need significant investment regardless of which opportunity I pursue sends me a strong signal that I should focus on growth in this area as a priority. Following that logic through to the next step of what creating that focus would look like reveals a conflict: The nature of the mission I ve set for myself draws me to products in areas that are new to me, which means there s also a need to invest in building expertise in those areas. Again not a surprise, but the time and focus required to develop that expertise competes with time spent growing my sales and marketing skills. So I have a prioritisation problem. Solving it is going to require changing the type of product I m trying to build in the short term: I need to build a product that uses my existing expertise and strengths as much as possible, so that I can put the majority of my energy into growing the core business skills where my confidence is currently lacking. Trying to deliver meaningful improvements to a big problem in an area I don t have past experience in while also learning how to sell and market a product is biting off more than I chew right away.

Changing the goal posts With those lessons in hand I m making three changes to my 2023 Goals:
  1. Reducing the product development goal from several ideas to two. The first was co2mon.nz. The second will be drawn from my existing expertise - not one of the previously stated ideas that require me to develop expertise in a new area.
  2. Moving the consulting and product development goals to be alternatives - I expect I can achieve at most one of them this year.
  3. Reducing the publishing target for this site from at least once a week to once a month . I thought I d have more to say this year, but the words are coming very slowly to me.
Reducing scope and ambition is humbling, but that s reality. I hope it turns out to be a case of slow down and lay the foundations in order to then move faster. The good news is that I don t feel the need to make any changes to the vision, mission and strategy I m following - I think they re still the right destination and overall path for me even though the first six months has proven bumpy. I just need to be a bit more realistic on the short-term goals that will feed into them.

The next few months I m choosing to prioritise the product development goal. I m aiming to complete the market research/problem definition phase for a product opportunity I ve identified in the SRE/DevOps space (where my previous experience is) and make a decision on whether to start development by mid August. In making that decision I plan to gather the answers to my questions, and then diligently evaluate whether the opportunity is worth committing to or not. I will write more about this process in coming weeks. If I decide to proceed that gives me 2-3 months to get an MVP in the hands of customers and get concrete validation of whether the product has revenue and growth potential before the end of the year. Tight, but if things go well, and I don t take any further consulting work, there s a reasonable chance I can complete the revised goal successfully. In the event that I decide the product opportunity I m currently researching is not the right one to commit to, I will likely revert to focusing on my consulting goal in the remaining 2-3 months of the year rather than attempt a third product development iteration. Appendix: Revised 2023 Goals Putting all that together, the ultimate outcome of this review (including updated progress scoring) looks like:
  1. Execute a series of successful consulting engagements, building a reputation for myself and leaving happy customers willing to provide testimonials that support a pipeline of future opportunities. Score: 3/10 - I focused entirely on co2mon.nz during April, May and June to the detriment of my pipeline of consulting work. This score is unlikely to improve given the above plan unless I decide not to commit to developing the idea I m currently investigating.
  2. Grow my product development skill set by taking two ideas (co2mon.nz, an SRE/DevOps focused product) to MVP stage with customer feedback received, and generate revenue and has growth potential from one of them. Score: 4/10 - I launched co2mon.nz and got feedback, I discovered it didn t solve a problem relevant to customers and therefore did not generate substantial revenue or growth potential. Idea number two is in still in progress.
  3. Develop and maintain a broad professional network.
    1. To build a professional relationship with at least 30 new people this year. Score: 6/10 - This is going well. On track for a 10/10 score.
    2. To publish a piece of writing on this site once a month and for many of those to generate interesting conversations and feedback. Score: 6/10 - 4 out of 6 months have featured a post meeting this goal so far.
    3. To support the growth of my local technical community by volunteering my experience and knowledge with others. Score: 5/10 - I ve given one talk and helped with SREcon23 APAC, but not as much other work in this area as I d like.

Russell Coker: Matrix

Introduction In 2020 I first setup a Matrix [1] server. Matrix is a full featured instant messaging protocol which requires a less stringent definition of instant , messages being delayed for minutes aren t that uncommon in my experience. Matrix is a federated service where the servers all store copies of the room data, so when you connect your client to it s home server it gets all the messages that were published while you were offline, it is widely regarded as being IRC but without a need to be connected all the time. One of it s noteworthy features is support for end to end encryption (so the server can t access cleartext messages from users) as a core feature. Matrix was designed for bridging with other protocols, the most well known of which is IRC. The most common Matrix server software is Synapse which is written in Python and uses a PostgreSQL database as it s backend [2]. My tests have shown that a lightly loaded Synapse server with less than a dozen users and only one or two active users will have noticeable performance problems if the PostgreSQL database is stored on SATA hard drives. This seems like the type of software that wouldn t have been developed before SSDs became commonly affordable. The matrix-synapse is in Debian/Unstable and the backports repositories for Bullseye and Buster. As Matrix is still being very actively developed you want to have a recent version of all related software so Debian/Buster isn t a good platform for running it, Bullseye or Bookworm are the preferred platforms. Configuring Synapse isn t really hard, but there are some postential problems. The first thing to do is to choose the DNS name, you can never change it without dropping the database (fresh install of all software and no documented way of keeping user configuration) so you don t want to get it wrong. Generally you will want the Matrix addresses at the top level of the domain you choose. When setting up a Matrix server for my local LUG I chose the top level of their domain luv.asn.au as the DNS name for the server. If you don t want to run a server then there are many open servers offering free account. Server Configuration Part of doing this configuration required creating the URL https://luv.asn.au/.well-known/matrix/client with the following contents so clients know where to connect. Note that you should not setup Jitsi sections without first discussing it with the people who run the Jitsi server in question.

If the base_url or the m.server points to a name that isn t configured then you need to add it to the web server configuration. See section 3.1 of the documentation about well known Matrix client fields [3]. To configure apache you have to enable proxy mode and SSL with the command a2enmod proxy ssl proxy_http and add the line Listen 8443 to /etc/apache2/ports.conf and restart Apache. The command chmod 700 /etc/matrix-synapse should probably be run to improve security, there s no reason for less restrictive permissions on that directory. In the /etc/matrix-synapse/homeserver.yaml file the macaroon_secret_key is a random key for generating tokens. To use the matrix.org server as a trusted key server and not receive warnings put the following line in the config file:

This web page can be used to test listing rooms via federation without logging in [4]. If it gives the error Can t find this server or its room list then you must set allow_public_rooms_without_auth and allow_public_rooms_over_federation to true in /etc/matrix-synapse/homeserver.yaml. The Matrix Federation Tester site [5] is good for testing new servers and for tests after network changes. Clients The Element (formerly known as Riot) client is the most common [6]. The following APT repository will allow you to install Element via apt install element-desktop on Debian/Buster.

The Debian backports repository for Buster has the latest version of Quaternion, apt install quaternion should install that for you. Quaternion doesn t support end to end encryption (E2EE) and also doesn t seem to have good support for some other features like being invited to a room. My current favourite client is Schildi Chat on Android [7], which has a notification message 24*7 to reduce the incidence of Android killing it. Eventually I want to go to PinePhone or Librem 5 for all my phone use so I need to find a full featured Linux client that works on a small screen. Comparing to Jabber I plan to keep using Jabber for alerts because it really does instant messaging, it can reliably get the message to me within a matter of seconds. Also there are a selection of command-line clients for Jabber to allow sending messages from servers. When I first investigated Matrix there was no program suitable for sending messages from a script and the libraries for the protocol made it unreasonably difficult to write one. Now there is a Matrix client written in shell script [8] which might do that. But the delay in receiving messages is still a problem. Also the Matrix clients I ve tried so far have UIs that are more suited to serious chat than to quickly reading a notification message. Bridges Here is a list of bridges between Matrix and other protocols [9]. You can run bridges yourself for many different messaging protocols including Slack, Discord, and Messenger. There are also bridges run for public use for most IRC channels. Here is a list of integrations with other services [10], this is for interacting with things other than IM systems such as RSS feeds, polls, and other things. This also has some frameworks for writing bots. More Information The Debian wiki page about Matrix is good [11]. The view.matrix.org site allows searching for public rooms [12].

Russell Coker: Do Desktop Computers Make Sense?

Laptop vs Desktop Price Currently the smaller and cheaper USB-C docks start at about $25 and Dell has a new Vostro with 8G of RAM and 2*USB-C ports for $788. That gives a bit over $800 for a laptop and dock vs $795 for the cheapest Dell desktop which also has 8G of RAM. For every way of buying laptops and desktops (EG buying from Officeworks, buying on ebay, etc) the prices for laptops and desktops seem very similar. For all those comparisons the desktop will typically have a faster CPU and more options for PCIe cards, larger storage, etc. But if you don t want to expand storage beyond the affordable 4TB NVMe/SSD devices, don t need to add PCIe cards, and don t need much CPU power then a laptop will do well. For the vast majority of the computer work I do my Thinkpad Carbon X1 Gen1 (from 2012) had plenty of CPU power. If someone who s not an expert in PC hardware was to buy a computer of a given age then laptops probably aren t more expensive than desktops even disregarding the fact that a laptop works without the need to purchase a monitor, a keyboard, or a mouse. I can get regular desktop PCs for almost nothing and get parts to upgrade them very cheaply but most people can t do that. I can also get a decent second-hand laptop and USB-C dock for well under $400. Servers and Gaming Systems For people doing serious programming or other compute or IO intensive tasks some variation on the server theme is the best option. That may be something more like the servers used by the r/homelab people than the corporate servers, or it might be something in the cloud, but a server is a server. If you are going to have a home server that s a tower PC then it makes sense to put a monitor on it and use it as a workstation. If your server makes so much noise that you can t spend much time in the same room or if it s hosted elsewhere then using a laptop to access it makes sense. Desktop computers for PC gaming makes sense as no-one seems to be making laptops with moderately powerful GPUs. The most powerful GPUs draw 150W which is more than most laptop PSUs can supply and even if a laptop PSU could supply that much there would be the issue of cooling. The Steam Deck [1] and the Nintendo Switch [2] can both work with USB-C docks. The PlayStation 5 [3] has a 350W PSU and doesn t support video over USB-C. The Steam Deck can do 8K resolution at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz but presumably the newer Steam games will need a desktop PC with a more powerful GPU to properly use such resolutions. For people who want the best FPS rates on graphics intensive games it could make sense to have a tower PC. Also a laptop that s run at high CPU/GPU use for a long time will tend to have it s vents clogged by dust and possibly have the cooling fan wear out. Monitor Resolution Laptop support for a single 4K monitor became common in 2012 with the release of the Ivy Bridge mobile CPUs from Intel in 2012. My own experience of setting up 4K monitors for a Linux desktop in 2019 was that it was unreasonably painful and that the soon to be released Debian/Bookworm will make things work nicely for 4K monitors with KDE on X11. So laptop hardware has handled the case of a single high resolution monitor since before such monitors were cheap or common and before software supported it well. Of course at that time you had to use either a proprietary dock or a mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor to get 4K working. But that was still easier than getting PCIe video cards supporting 4K resolution which is something that according to spec sheets wasn t well supported by affordable cards in 2017. Since USB-C became a standard feature in laptops in about 2017 support of more monitors than most people would want through a USB-C dock became standard. My Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen5 which was released in 2017 will support 2*FullHD monitors plus a 4K monitor via a USB-C dock, I suspect it would do at least 2*4K monitors but haven t had a chance to test. Cheap USB-C docks supporting this sort of thing have only become common in the last year or so. How Many Computers per Home Among middle class Australians it s common to have multiple desktop PCs per household. One for each child who s over the age of about 13 and one for the parents seems to be reasonably common. Students in the later years of high-school and university students are often compelled to have laptops so having the number of laptops plus the number of desktops be larger than the population of the house probably isn t uncommon even among people who aren t really into computers. As an aside it s probably common among people who read my blog to have 2 desktops, a laptop, and a cloud server for their own personal use. But even among people who don t do that sort of thing having computers outnumber people in a home is probably common. A large portion of the computer users can do everything they need on a laptop. For gamers the graphics intensive games often run well on a console and that s probably the most effective way of getting to playing the games. Of course the fact that there is RGB RAM (RAM with Red, Green, and Blue LEDs to light up) along with a lot of other wild products sold to gamers suggests that gaming PCs are not about what runs the game most effectively and that an art/craft project with the PC is more important than actually playing games. Instead of having one desktop PC per bedroom and laptops for school/university as well it would make more sense to have a laptop per person and have a USB-C dock and monitor in each bedroom and a USB-C dock connected to a large screen TV in the lounge. This gives plenty of flexibility for moving around to do work and sharing what s on your computer with other people. It also allows taking a work computer home and having work with your monitor, having a friend bring their laptop to your home to work on something together, etc. For most people desktop computers don t make sense. While I think that convergence of phones with laptops and desktops is the way of the future [4] for most people having laptops take over all functions of desktops is the best option today.

Arturo Borrero Gonz lez: Wikimedia Hackathon 2023 Athens summary

Post logo During the weekend of 19-23 May 2023 I attended the Wikimedia hackathon 2023 in Athens, Greece. The event physically reunited folks interested in the more technological aspects of the Wikimedia movement in person for the first time since 2019. The scope of the hacking projects include (but was not limited to) tools, wikipedia bots, gadgets, server and network infrastructure, data and other technical systems. My role in the event was two-fold: on one hand I was in the event because of my role as SRE in the Wikimedia Cloud Services team, where we provided very valuable services to the community, and I was expected to support the technical contributors of the movement that were around. Additionally, and because of that same role, I did some hacking myself too, which was specially augmented given I generally collaborate on a daily basis with some community members that were present in the hacking room. The hackathon had some conference-style track and I ran a session with my coworker Bryan, called Past, Present and Future of Wikimedia Cloud Services (Toolforge and friends) (slides) which was very satisfying to deliver given the friendly space that it was. I attended a bunch of other sessions, and all of them were interesting and well presented. The number of ML themes that were present in the program schedule was exciting. I definitely learned a lot from attending those sessions, from how LLMs work, some fascinating applications for them in the wikimedia space, to what were some industry trends for training and hosting ML models. Session Despite the sessions, the main purpose of the hackathon was, well, hacking. While I was in the hacking space for more than 12 hours each day, my ability to get things done was greatly reduced by the constant conversations, help requests, and other social interactions with the folks. Don t get me wrong, I embraced that reality with joy, because the social bonding aspect of it is perhaps the main reason why we gathered in person instead of virtually. That being said, this is a rough list of what I did: The hackathon was also the final days of Technical Engagement as an umbrella group for WMCS and Developer Advocacy teams within the Technology department of the Wikimedia Foundation because of an internal reorg.. We used the chance to reflect on the pleasant time we have had together since 2019 and take a final picture of the few of us that were in person in the event. Technical Engagement It wasn t the first Wikimedia Hackathon for me, and I felt the same as in previous iterations: it was a welcoming space, and I was surrounded by friends and nice human beings. I ended the event with a profound feeling of being privileged, because I was part of the Wikimedia movement, and because I was invited to participate in it.

Shirish Agarwal: Pearls of Luthra, Dahaad, Tetris & Discord.

Pearls of Luthra Pearls of Luthra is the first book by Brian Jacques and I think I am going to be a fan of his work. This particular book you have to be wary of. While it is a beautiful book with quite a few illustrations, I have to warn that if you are somebody who feels hungry at the very mention of food, then you will be hungry throughout the book. There isn t a single page where food isn t mentioned and not just any kind of food, the kind of food that is geared towards sweet tooth. So if you fancy tarts or chocolates or anything sweet you will right at home. The book also touches upon various teas and wines and various liquors but food is where it shines in literally. The tale is very much like a Harry Potter adventure but isn t as dark as HP was. In fact, apart from one death and one ear missing rest of our heroes and heroines and there are quite a few. I don t want to give too much away as it s a book to be treasured.

Dahaad Dahaad (the roar) is Sonakshi Sinha s entry in OTT/Web Series. The stage is set somewhere in North India while the exploits are based on a real life person called Cyanide Mohan who killed 20 women between 2005-2009. In the web series however, the antagonist s crimes are done over a period of 12 years and has 29 women as his victims. Apart from that it s pretty much a copy of what was done by the person above. It s a melting pot of a series which quite a few stories enmeshed along with the main one. The main onus and plot of the movie is about women from lower economic and caste order whose families want them to be wed but cannot due to huge demands for dowry. Now in such a situation, if a person were to give them a bit of attention, promise marriage and ask them to steal a bit and come with him and whatever, they will do it. The same modus operandi was done by Cynaide Mohan. He had a car that was not actually is but used it show off that he s from a richer background, entice the women, have sex, promise marriage and in the morning after pill there will be cynaide which the women unwittingly will consume. This is also framed by the protagonist Sonakshi Sinha to her mother as her mother is also forcing her to get married as she is becoming older. She shows some of the photographs of the victims and says that while the perpetrator is guilty but so is the overall society that puts women in such vulnerable positions. AFAIK, that is still the state of things. In fact, there is a series called Indian Matchmaking that has all the snobbishness that you want. How many people could have a lifestyle like the ones shown in that, less than 2% of the population. It s actually shows like the above that make the whole thing even more precarious  Apart from it, the show also shows prejudice about caste and background. I wouldn t go much into it as it s worth seeing and experiencing.

Tetris Tetris in many a ways is a story of greed. It s also a story of a lone inventor who had to wait almost 20 odd years to profit from his invention. Forbes does a marvelous job of giving some more background and foreground info. about Tetris, the inventor and the producer that went to strike it rich. It also does share about copyright misrepresentation happens but does nothing to address it. Could talk a whole lot but better to see the movie and draw your own conclusions. For me it was 4/5.

Discord Discord became Discord 2.0 and is a blank to me. A blank page. Can t do anything. First I thought it was a bug. Waited for a few days as sometimes webservices do fix themselves. But two weeks on and it still wasn t fixed then decided to look under. One of the tools in Firefox is Web Developer Tools ( CTRL+Shift+I) that tells you if an element of a page is not appearing or at least gives you a hint. To me it gave me the following

Then on a hunch, searched on reddit and saw the following. Be careful while visiting the link as it s labelled NSFW although to my mind there wasn t anything remotely NSFW about it. They do mention using another tool AudioContext Fingerprint Defender which supposedly fakes or spoofs an id. As this add-on isn t tracked by Firefox privacy team it s hard for me to say anything positive or negative. So, in the end I stopped using discord as the alternative was being tracked by them  Last but not the least, saw this about a week back. Sooner or later this had to happen as Elon tries to make money off Twitter.

Enrico Zini: Gtk4 model-backed radio button in Python

Gtk4 has interesting ways of splitting models and views. One that I didn't find very well documented, especially for Python bindings, is a set of radio buttons backed by a common model. The idea is to define an action that takes a string as a state. Each radio button is assigned a string matching one of the possible states, and when the state of the backend action is changed, the radio buttons are automatically updated. All the examples below use a string for a value type, but anything can be used that fits into a GLib.Variant. The model This defines the action. Note that enables all the usual declarative ways of a status change:

Matt Brown: Retrospective: Mar 2023

The key decision I made mid-March was to commit to pursuing ventilation monitoring as my primary product development focus. Prior to that decision, I hoped to use my writing plan to drive a breadth-first survey of the opportunities for each of my product ideas before deciding which had the best business potential to focus on first. Two factors changed my mind:
  1. As noted last month, I m finding the writing process much slower and harder than I expected the survey across all the ideas may not complete until mid-year or later!
  2. I ve realised that having begun building co2mon.nz last year, to stop work on the project at this point would leave me feeling that I had not done justice to developing the product and testing the market - seeing it to a conclusion is important to me.
This decision is an explicit choice to prioritize seeing a project through to a conclusion (successful, or otherwise) regardless of whether or not it has the highest potential of the various ideas I could invest time into. I m comfortable making that trade-off in this instance, but I am going to bound my time investment to two months. I ll evaluate at the end of May whether I m seeing sufficient traction and potential to justify continuing further with the idea. I had only one fully uninterrupted work week in March due to a combination of days out due to school trips, two LandSAR call outs and various farm maintenance tasks. April will be similarly disrupted given school holidays and a planned family trip to Brisbane. Sharpening my focus feels particularly necessary given this reality to ensure I m not spread overly thin.

Consulting - 4/10 Goal: Execute a series of successful consulting engagements, building a reputation for myself and leaving happy customers willing to provide testimonials that support a pipeline of future opportunities. Consulting hours were down from February, hitting only 31% of target this month as the client didn t make use of all the hours I had allocated for them. I didn t invest any time in advertising my services or developing new clients or projects over the month, which will now become a priority for April.

Product Development - 4/10 Goal: Grow my product development skill set by taking several ideas to MVP stage with customer feedback received, and launch at least one product which generates revenue and has growth potential. With the new focus entirely on co2mon.nz, I spent a lot of time re-working and developing my thinking around how I want to take this forward, specifically trying to analyse where I saw an opportunity in the market. After attending a workshop on finding product market fit using quantifiable metrics at the Southern SaaS conference this month, I ve realised that much of the time I spent on this analysis is too insular and focused on my own observations - I need to get out and talk to a lot more people and get more feedback on their needs and understanding of the space instead. Seems obvious in retrospect! I also spent a few days beginning to build another batch of prototype CO2 monitors so I have some units to use for experimentation and testing with potential customers as I get out and have those conversations. I can probably build one or two more batches of prototype monitors before needing to look at PCB assembly in earnest.

Professional Network Development - 8/10 Goal: To build a professional relationship with at least 30 new people this year. This goal continues to be my highlight with 8 new contacts added this month and catch-ups with 4 existing people I had not spoken to for a while. I joined the KiwiSaaS central community and attended the SouthernSaas conference this month as well, which has been time well spent given the workshop learnings discussed above.

Writing - 3/10 Goal: To publish a high-quality piece of writing on this site at least once a week. I published a single post, the first half of my updated ventilation monitoring business plan. I continue to find the writing process much harder and slower than I hoped or expected and remain well below my target publishing rate, but one post is better than zero! I tested working with an editor I contracted via UpWork who provided some very useful feedback on the structure of my writing which helped to unblock some of my progress. I plan to continue doing this for at least a few more posts.

Community - 5/10 Goal: To support the growth of my local technical community by volunteering my experience and knowledge with others through activities such as mentoring, conference talks and similar.

Russ Allbery: Review: Thief of Time

Thief of Time is the 26th Discworld novel and the last Death novel, although he still appears in subsequent books. It's the third book starring Susan Sto Helit, so I don't recommend starting here. Mort is the best starting point for the Death subseries, and Reaper Man provides a useful introduction to the villains. Jeremy Clockson was an orphan raised by the Guild of Clockmakers. He is very good at making clocks. He's not very good at anything else, particularly people, but his clocks are the most accurate in Ankh-Morpork. He is therefore the logical choice to receive a commission by a mysterious noblewoman who wants him to make the most accurate possible clock: a clock that can measure the tick of the universe, one that a fairy tale says had been nearly made before. The commission is followed by a surprise delivery of an Igor, to help with the clock-making. People who live in places with lots of fields become farmers. People who live where there is lots of iron and coal become blacksmiths. And people who live in the mountains near the Hub, near the gods and full of magic, become monks. In the highest valley are the History Monks, founded by Wen the Eternally Surprised. Like most monks, they take apprentices with certain talents and train them in their discipline. But Lobsang Ludd, an orphan discovered in the Thieves Guild in Ankh-Morpork, is proving a challenge. The monks decide to apprentice him to Lu-Tze the sweeper; perhaps that will solve multiple problems at once. Since Hogfather, Susan has moved from being a governess to a schoolteacher. She brings to that job the same firm patience, total disregard for rules that apply to other people, and impressive talent for managing children. She is by far the most popular teacher among the kids, and not only because she transports her class all over the Disc so that they can see things in person. It is a job that she likes and understands, and one that she's quite irate to have interrupted by a summons from her grandfather. But the Auditors are up to something, and Susan may be able to act in ways that Death cannot. This was great. Susan has quickly become one of my favorite Discworld characters, and this time around there is no (or, well, not much) unbelievable romance or permanently queasy god to distract. The clock-making portions of the book quickly start to focus on Igor, who is a delightful perspective through whom to watch events unfold. And the History Monks! The metaphysics of what they are actually doing (which I won't spoil, since discovering it slowly is a delight) is perhaps my favorite bit of Discworld world building to date. I am a sucker for stories that focus on some process that everyone thinks happens automatically and investigate the hidden work behind it. I do want to add a caveat here that the monks are in part a parody of Himalayan Buddhist monasteries, Lu-Tze is rather obviously a parody of Laozi and Daoism in general, and Pratchett's parodies of non-western cultures are rather ham-handed. This is not quite the insulting mess that the Chinese parody in Interesting Times was, but it's heavy on the stereotypes. It does not, thankfully, rely on the stereotypes; the characters are great fun on their own terms, with the perfect (for me) balance of irreverence and thoughtfulness. Lu-Tze refusing to be anything other than a sweeper and being irritatingly casual about all the rules of the order is a classic bit that Pratchett does very well. But I also have the luxury of ignoring stereotypes of a culture that isn't mine, and I think Pratchett is on somewhat thin ice. As one specific example, having Lu-Tze's treasured sayings be a collection of banal aphorisms from a random Ankh-Morpork woman is both hilarious and also arguably rather condescending, and I'm not sure where I landed. It's a spot-on bit of parody of how a lot of people who get very into "eastern religions" sound, but it's also equating the Dao De Jing with advice from the Discworld equivalent of a English housewife. I think the generous reading is that Lu-Tze made the homilies profound by looking at them in an entirely different way than the woman saying them, and that's not completely unlike Daoism and works surprisingly well. But that's reading somewhat against the grain; Pratchett is clearly making fun of philosophical koans, and while anything is fair game for some friendly poking, it still feels a bit weird. That isn't the part of the History Monks that I loved, though. Their actual role in the story doesn't come out of the parody. It's something entirely native to Discworld, and it's an absolute delight. The scene with Lobsang and the procrastinators is perhaps my favorite Discworld set piece to date. Everything about the technology of the History Monks, even the Bond parody, is so good. I grew up reading the Marvel Comics universe, and Thief of Time reminds me of a classic John Byrne or Jim Starlin story, where the heroes are dumped into the middle of vast interdimensional conflicts involving barely-anthropomorphized cosmic powers and the universe is revealed to work in ever more intricate ways at vastly expanding scales. The Auditors are villains in exactly that tradition, and just like the best of those stories, the fulcrum of the plot is questions about what it means to be human, what it means to be alive, and the surprising alliances these non-human powers make with humans or semi-humans. I devoured this kind of story as a kid, and it turns out I still love it. The one complaint I have about the plot is that the best part of this book is the middle, and the end didn't entirely work for me. Ronnie Soak is at his best as a supporting character about three quarters of the way through the book, and I found the ending of his subplot much less interesting. The cosmic confrontation was oddly disappointing, and there's a whole extended sequence involving chocolate that I think was funnier in Pratchett's head than it was in mine. The ending isn't bad, but the middle of this book is my favorite bit of Discworld writing yet, and I wish the story had carried that momentum through to the end. I had so much fun with this book. The Discworld novels are clearly getting better. None of them have yet vaulted into the ranks of my all-time favorite books there's always some lingering quibble or sagging bit but it feels like they've gone from reliably good books to more reliably great books. The acid test is coming, though: the next book is a Rincewind book, which are usually the weak spots. Followed by The Last Hero in publication order. There is no direct thematic sequel. Rating: 8 out of 10

Matt Brown: Retrospective: Feb 2023

February ended up being a very short work month as I made a last minute decision to travel to Adelaide for the first 2 weeks of the month to help my brother with some house renovations he was undertaking. I thought I might be able to keep up with some work and my writing goals in the evenings while I was there, but days of hard manual labour are such an unfamiliar routine for me that I didn t have any energy left to make good on that intention. The majority of my time and focus for the remaining one and half weeks of the month was catching up on the consulting work that I had pushed back while in Adelaide. So while it doesn t make for a thrilling first month to look back and report on, overall I m not unhappy with what I achieved given the time available. Next month, I hope to be able to report some more exciting progress on the product development front as well.

Monthly Scoring Rubric I m evaluating each goal using a 10 point scale based on execution velocity and risk level, rather than absolute success (which is what I will look at in the annual/mid-year review). If velocity is good and risk is low or well managed the score is high, if either the velocity is low, or risk is high then the score is low. E.g:
  • 10 - perfect execution with low-risk, on track for significantly overachieving the goal.
  • 7 - good execution with low or well managed risk, highly likely to achieve the goal.
  • 5 - execution and risk are OK, should achieve the goal if all goes well.
  • 3 - execution or risk have problems, goal is at risk.
  • 0 - stalled, with no obvious path to recovery or success.

Goals

Consulting - 6/10 Goal: Execute a series of successful consulting engagements, building a reputation for myself and leaving happy customers willing to provide testimonials that support a pipeline of future opportunities.
  • I have one active local engagement assisting a software team with migrating their application from a single to multi-region architecture.
  • Two promising international engagements which were close to starting both cancelled based on newly issued company policies freezing their staffing/outsourcing budgets due to the current economic climate.
I m happy with where this is at - I hit 90% of my target hours in February (taking into account 2 weeks off) and the feedback I m receiving is positive. The main risk is the future pipeline of engagements, particularly if the cancellations indicate a new pattern. I m not overly concerned yet, as all the opportunities to date have been from direct or referred contacts in my personal network, so there s plenty of potential to more actively solicit work to create a healthier pipeline.

Product Development - 3/10 Goal: Grow my product development skill set by taking several ideas to MVP stage with customer feedback received, and launch at least one product which generates revenue and has growth potential.
  • Accelerating electrification - I continued to keep up with industry news and added some interesting reports to my reading queue, but made no significant progress towards identifying a specific product opportunity.
  • Farm management SaaS - no activity or progress at all.
  • co2mon.nz - I put significant thought and planning into how to approach a second iteration of this product. I started writing and completed 80% of a post to communicate the revised business plan, but it s not ready for publication yet, and even if it was, the real work towards it would need to actually happen to score more points here.
I had high hopes to make at least some progress in all three areas in February, but it just didn t happen due to lack of time. The good news is that since the low score here is purely execution driven, there s no new risks or blockers that will hinder much better progress here in March.

Professional Network Development - 8/10 Goal: To build a professional relationship with at least 30 new people this year. This is off to a strong start, I made 4 brand new connections and re-established contact with 9 other existing people I d not talked to for a while. I ve found the conversations energising and challenging and I m looking forward to continuing to keep this up.

Writing - 2/10 Goal: To publish a high-quality piece of writing on this site at least once a week. Well off track as already noted. I am enjoying the writing process and I continue to find it useful in developing my thoughts and forcing me to challenge my assumptions, but coupling the writing process with the thinking/planning that is a prerequisite to get those benefits definitely makes my output a lot slower than I was expecting. The slower speed, combined with the obvious time constraints of this month are not a great doubly whammy to be starting with, but I think with some planning and preparation it should have been avoidable by having a backlog of pre-written content for use in weeks where I m on holiday or otherwise busy. It s worth noting that among all the useful feedback I received, this writing target was often called out as overly ambitious, or likely to be counterproductive to producing quality writing. The feedback makes sense - for now I m not planning to change the goal (I might at my 6-month review point), but I am going to be diligent about adhering to my quality standard, which in turn means I m choosing to accept missing a weekly post here and there and taking a lower score on the goal overall. I apologise if you ve been eagerly waiting for writing that never arrived over February!

Community - 5/10 Goal: To support the growth of my local technical community by volunteering my experience and knowledge with others through activities such as mentoring, conference talks and similar.
  • I was an invited participant of the monthly KiwiSRE meet-up which was discussing SRE team models, and in particular I was able to speak to my experiences as described in an old CRE blog post on this topic.
  • I joined the program committee for SREcon23 APAC which is scheduled for mid-June in Singapore. I also submitted two talk proposals of my own (not sharing the details for now, since the review process is intended to be blind) which I m hopeful might make the grade with my fellow PC members!
