Emilio Pozuelo Monfort: Collaborative maintenance

The Debian Python Modules Team is discussing which DVCS to switch to from SVN. Ondrej Certik asked how to generate a list of commiters to the team s repository, so I looked at it and got this:

Conclusions:
- Why do I have the full python-modules and pkg-gstreamer trees, if I have just one commit to DPMT, and don t even have commit access to the GStreamer team?
- If you don t want to seem like you have done less commits than you have actually done, don t change your alioth name when you become a DD ;) (hint: pox-guest and piotr in python-modules are the same person)
- If the switch to a new VCS was based on a vote where you have one vote per commit, the top 3 commiters in pkg-gnome could win the vote if they chosed the same! For python-apps it s the 4 top commiters, and the 7 ones for python-modules. pkg-gstreamer is a bit special :)

Romain Francoise: Cleaner

In the productive procrastination department: I repackaged rcs using debhelper (it feels like the future) and while I was at it, I implemented MadCoder's git maintenance scheme where changes from upstream are maintained in a rebased integration branch and serialized as patches in the Debian branch (master in my case) using git format-patch. It's pretty nice:Of course this is a very low-maintenance package (the last upstream release was 13 years ago) so it doesn't matter very much which maintenance strategy it uses, but after implementing it I'm pretty confident that it works and I might switch my other packages to it.

If you're interested in knowing more about clever ways to use modern VCS for packaging, you may want to join the vcs-pkg mailing-list.

Romain Francoise: Updated Debian Vcs-* statistics

Not much has changed since my previous post, Subversion and Git are still growing.

Zack has a similar graph with a logarithmic y-axis which shows that arch is losing users. Who would have thought? :)

Romain Francoise: Some .diff.gz statistics

The OpenSSL fiasco has started a fresh discussion on Debian source packages and the way we handle changes to upstream software. One of the issues under discussion is that some Debian packages don't use a patch system and ship all their modifications unseparated in the Debian .diff.gz, which makes it harder or impossible to extract patches later on and to understand why some changes were made. The commonly recommended way of doing things is instead to keep the upstream source pristine, storing modifications cleanly separated and documented under debian/patches; several tools such as quilt or dpatch can make this process easy.

Out of curiosity, I did a quick scan of my local mirror to see how many packages ship changes outside debian/ in their .diff.gz, and I was surprised to see that 4803 source packages out of 11853 (40%) do so! This is much more than I expected. Some packages even use a patch system but still have changes in .diff.gz, as shown by this lintian check.

The most commonly patched files in affected packages are:
   1006 config.sub
1002 config.guess
823 Makefile
754 configure
715 Makefile.in
484 aclocal.m4
Most of these are caused by autotools updates which are necessary if upstream ships old versions of these files. In many cases there are clean ways to deal with this, for example to always have up-to-date versions of config. guess, sub you can simply make them re-exec their authoritative versions (as shown by this patch) and build-depend on autotools-dev.

If you don't use a patch system, now is a good time to start. The New Maintainers' guide has more information on the topic.

Romain Francoise: Updated Debian Vcs-* statistics

Today I discovered that I have a nightly cron job on one of my machines to generate the Vcs statistics I mentioned previously; somehow I had forgotten. So here's an updated graph:

Subversion and Git are still growing fast, the others aren't very successful. 18.8% of all source packages in main are maintained in Subversion, and Git is up to 4.3%.

It's also interesting to note that 91% of the packages maintained in Subversion are hosted on Alioth (svn.debian.org) whereas 77% of the packages maintained in Git are on git.debian.org.

Romain Francoise: More Vcs-* statistics

Expanding on my previous post, this time with a graph:

The first package to add a Vcs field was amule on June 7th, 2006. And it was Bzr.

Romain Francoise: Balance is but a shimmering notion

After beating git-debimport into submission for some time, I now have a reasonably coherent git archive of tcpdump with proper commit dates, correct attribution and a tag layout compatible with what git-buildpackage does.

Along the way I tried out guilt (git + quilt). Unfortunately, my trust level almost immediately reached zero.

Apart from that, today pretty much sucked. Prepare your sleep apparatus. Better luck tomorrow.

Romain Francoise: A study of file duplication in the Debian archive

[Long post, sorry. If you're short on time skip to the end for the juicy parts.]

It all started about a week ago when I decided to find out how many files were unique in the whole Debian archive, and how many were duplicated in the same package or in other packages. I had done some work on duplication detection before, and I knew that the process involves getting some kind of hash value of every document, then finding duplicate values in the list of hashes.

I already had a local Debian mirror so the raw data was all there. I basically had two options: either compute the hash value of every file myself from the packages in my mirror, or find some other (ideally faster) way to determine if a file is unique. I quickly decided that the best option was to use the md5sums embedded in most Debian packages (in the DEBIAN/md5sums control file). That would give me MD5 hashes of all regular files, excluding conffiles.

So the first step was to check how many packages have embedded md5sums, and a simple script showed that less than 3% don't have them. This first check exposed a bug in python-debian, which was duly reported. Along the way, my post prompted a discussion on debian-devel about the state of md5sums, and I set up a daily check to keep track of things.

The next step was to make sure that all md5sum-enabled packages had usable information. It turned out that python-debian choked on 103 packages because of embedded spaces in filenames, and that it also had a blocker bug when used in Python 2.4. I filed two more bugs.

All that remained was the easiest part: write the program to find duplicate files. I did that, and I now have all kinds of funny statistics:If you're still reading so far, thanks! You can see the report file, and the program itself. If you want to run it, note that it's optimized for speed rather than memory efficiency; it runs in under 3 minutes but uses up to 1.5GB of memory (my home desktop has 4GB).

The grand conclusion is that all things considered, there is very little file duplication in the archive: the #1 duplicate represents less than 0.4% of the two million analyzed files, and it doesn't actually use any space since it's an empty file... :)

Romain Francoise: Official emacs-snapshot backport for sarge

In case anyone's interested I maintain an official sarge backport of my emacs-snapshot packages, available from here. It's updated frequently, but not as often as in sid.

Note that quite a few Emacs-related packages in sarge don't have support for emacs-snapshot, but in most cases you can safely install the version from etch or sid since they have weak dependencies on the rest of the system. One regrettable exception is dictionaries-common, so you might want to forcibly prevent it from interfering with emacs-snapshot otherwise it'll shadow flyspell and ispell with old versions. (You might not even need external Emacs packages at all since emacs-snapshot already includes Gnus 5.11, MH-E, ERC, rcirc, Calc, Tramp, ido, python-mode, tumme, Org, etc etc.)

If you find bugs in the backport please don't report them in the BTS but email me directly (rfrancoise@d.o).

I've also been wondering if I should reconsider my 'sid-only' policy for emacs-snapshot, I keep getting requests from users to let it trickle into testing, and given that the past few months have shown that Emacs 22 is as stable as Emacs 21 (if not more), the idea has credit.

The only problem (if one ignores the fact that it would go against existing Debian policies) is that emacs-snapshot is updated weekly, and the minimum delay for low-urgency uploads is ten days. But I guess I could delay updates every once in a while to let the packages become eligible for migration...

(Also, even though it's not in testing, emacs-snapshot is included in Ubuntu dapper. So whether I like it or not, outdated snapshots will end up on people's systems sooner or later, and I'll have to deal with it...)
