This is a short announcement to say that I have changed my main OpenPGP key. A signed statement is available with the cryptographic details but, in short, the reason is that I stopped using my old YubiKey NEO that I have worn on my keyring since 2015. I now have a YubiKey 5 which supports ED25519 which features much shorter keys and faster decryption. It allowed me to move all my secret subkeys on the key (including encryption keys) while retaining reasonable performance. I have written extensive documentation on how to do that OpenPGP key rotation and also YubiKey OpenPGP operations.

Warning on storing encryption keys on a YubiKey People wishing to move their private encryption keys to such a security token should be very careful as there are special precautions to take for disaster recovery. I am toying with the idea of writing an article specifically about disaster recovery for secrets and backups, dealing specifically with cases of death or disabilities.

Autocrypt changes One nice change is the impact on Autocrypt headers, which are considerably shorter. Before, the header didn't even fit on a single line in an email, it overflowed to five lines:

Note that I have implemented my own kind of ridiculous Autocrypt support for the Notmuch Emacs email client I use, see this elisp code. To import keys, I pipe the message into this script which is basically just:

Note on OpenPGP usage While some have claimed OpenPGP's death, I believe those are overstated. Maybe it's just me, but I still use OpenPGP for my password management, to authenticate users and messages, and it's the interface to my YubiKey for authenticating with SSH servers. I understand people feel that OpenPGP is possibly insecure, counter-intuitive and full of problems, but I think most of those problems should instead be attributed to its current flagship implementation, GnuPG. I have tried to work with GnuPG for years, and it keeps surprising me with evilness and oddities. I have high hopes that the Sequoia project can bring some sanity into this space, and I also hope that RFC4880bis can eventually get somewhere so we have a more solid specification with more robust crypto. It's kind of a shame that this has dragged on for so long, but Update: there's a separate draft called openpgp-crypto-refresh that might actually be adopted as the "OpenPGP RFC" soon! And it doesn't keep real work from happening in Sequoia and other implementations. Thunderbird rewrote their OpenPGP implementation with RNP (which was, granted, a bumpy road because it lost compatibility with GnuPG) and Sequoia now has a certificate store with trust management (but still no secret storage), preliminary OpenPGP card support and even a basic GnuPG compatibility layer. I'm also curious to try out the OpenPGP CA capabilities. So maybe it's just because I'm becoming an old fart that doesn't want to change tools, but so far I haven't seen a good incentive in switching away from OpenPGP, and haven't found a good set of tools that completely replace it. Maybe OpenSSH's keys and CA can eventually replace it, but I suspect they will end up rebuilding most of OpenPGP anyway, just more slowly. If they do, let's hope they avoid the mistakes our community has done in the past at least...

I m trying to replace my old OpenPGP key with a new one. The old key wasn t compromised or lost or anything bad. Is still valid, but I plan to get rid of it soon. It was created in 2013. Here's how I set up a media PC using Kodi (formerly XMBC) and a Raspberry Pi 4.

Hardware The hardware is fairly straightforward, but here's what I ended up getting:

• Raspberry Pi 4 board: I went for the maximum amount of RAM (8 GB).
• SD-card: Since I'm not going to store any media on here, 32 GB is plenty.
• HDMI to micro-HDMI cable
• Case and power supply

You'll probably want to add a remote control to that setup. I used an old Streamzap I had lying around.

Installing the OS on the SD-card Plug the SD card into a computer using a USB adapter. Download the imager and use it to install Raspbian on the SDcard. Then you can simply plug the SD card into the Pi and boot.

System configuration Using sudo raspi-config, I changed the following:

• Set hostname (System Options)
• Wait for network at boot (System Options): needed for NFS
• Disable screen blanking (Display Options)
• Enable ssh (Interface Options)
• Configure locale, timezone and keyboard (Localisation Options)
• Set WiFi country (Localisation Options)

Then I enabled automatic updates:

Headless setup Should you need to do the setup without a monitor, you can enable ssh by inserting the SD card into a computer and then creating an empty file called ssh in the boot partition. Plug it into your router and boot it up. Check the IP that it received by looking at the active DHCP leases in your router's admin panel. Then login:

using the default password of raspberry.

Hardening In order to secure the Pi, I followed most of the steps I usually take when setting up a new Linux server. I created a new user account for admin and ssh access:

and changed the pi user password to a random one:

sudo passwd pi

before removing its admin permissions:

Finally, I enabled the Uncomplicated Firewall by installing its package:

apt install ufw

and only allowing ssh connections. After starting ufw using systemctl start ufw.service, you can check that it's configured as expected using ufw status. It should display the following:

Installing Kodi Kodi is very straightforward to install since it's now part of the Raspbian repositories:

Network File System In order to avoid having to have all media storage connected directly to the Pi via USB, I setup an NFS share over my local network. First, give static IP allocations to the server and the Pi in your DHCP server, then add it to the /etc/hosts file on your NFS server:

Install the NFS server package:

Setup the directories to share in /etc/exports:

I have been quite absent from Debian stuff lately, but this increased since COVID-19 hits us. In this blog post I'll try to sketch what I have been doing to help fight COVID-19 this last few months.

In the beginningWhen the pandemic reached Argentina the government started a quarantine. We engineers (like engineers around the world) started to think on how to put our abilities in order to help with the situation. Some worked toward providing more protection elements to medical staff, some towards increasing the number of ventilation machines at disposal. Another group of people started thinking on another ways of helping. In Bah a Blanca arised the idea of monitoring some variables remotely and in masse.

Simplified Monitoring of Patients in Situations of Mass Hospitalization (MoSimPa)

This is where the idea of remotely monitored devices came in, and MoSimPa (from the spanish of "monitoreo simplificado de pacientes en situaci n de internaci n masiva") started to get form. The idea is simple: oximetry (SpO2), heart rate and body temperature will be recorded and, instead of being shown in a display in the device itself, they will be transmitted and monitored in one or more places. In this way medical staff doesn't has to reach a patient constantly and monitoring could be done by medical staff for more patients at the same time. In place monitoring can also happen using a cellphone or tablet.

The devices do not have a screen of their own and almost no buttons, making them more cheap to build and thus more in line with the current economic reality of Argentina.

This is where the project Para Ayudar was created. The project aims to produce the aforementioned non-invasive device to be used in health institutions, hospitals, intra hospital transports and homes.

It is worth to note that the system is designed as a complementary measure for continuous monitoring of a pacient. Care should be taken to check that symptomps and overall patient status don't mean an inmediate life threat. In other words, it is NOT designed for ICUs.

All the above done with Free/Libre/Open Source software and hardware designs. Any manufacturing company can then use them for mass production.

The importance of early pneumonia detection

We were already working in MoSimPa when an NYTimes article caught or attention: "The Infection That s Silently Killing Coronavirus Patients". From the article:

A vast majority of Covid pneumonia patients I met had remarkably low oxygen saturations at triage seemingly incompatible with life but they were using their cellphones as we put them on monitors. Although breathing fast, they had relatively minimal apparent distress, despite dangerously low oxygen levels and terrible pneumonia on chest X-rays.

This greatly reinforced the idea we were on the right track.

The project from a technical standpoint

As the project is primarily designed for and by Argentinians the current system design and software documentation is written in spanish, but the source code (or at least most of it) is written in english. Should anyone need it in english please do not hesitate in asking me.

General system description

The system is comprised of the devices, a main machine acting as a server (in our case for small setups a Raspberry Pi) and the possibility of accessing data trough cell phones, tablets or other PCs in the network.

The hardware

As of today this is the only part in which I still can't provide schematics, but I'll update this blog post and technical doc with them as soon as I get my hands into them.

Again the design is due to be built in Argentina where getting our hands on hardware is not easy. Moreover it needs to be as cheap as possible, specially now that the Argentinian currency, the peso, is every day more depreciated. So we decided on using an ESP32 as the main microprocessor and a set of Maxim sensors devices. Again, more info when I have them at hand.

The software

Here we have many more components to describe. Firstly the ESP32 code is done with the Arduino SDK. This part of the stack will receive many updates soon, as soon as the first hardware prototypes are out.

For the rest of the stack I decided to go ahead with whatever is available in Debian stable. Why? Well, Raspbian provides a Debian stable-based image and I'm a Debian Developer, so things should go just natural for me in that front. Of course each component has its own packaging. I'm one of Debian's Qt maintainers then using Qt will also be quite natural for me. Plots? Qwt, of course. And with that I have most of my necessities fulfilled. I choose PostgreSql as database server and Mosquitto as MQTT broker.

Between the database and MQTT is mosimpa-datakeeper. The piece of software from which medical staff monitor patients is unsurprisingly called mosimpa-monitor.

And for managing patients, devices, locations and internments (CRUD anyone?) there is currently a Qt-based application called mosimpa-abm.

The idea is to replace it with a web service so it doesn't needs to be confined to the RPi or require installations in other machines. I considered using webassembly but I would have to also build PostgreSql in order to compile Qt's plugin.

Translations? Of course! As I have already mentioned the code is written in English. Qt allows to easily translate applications, so I keep a Spanish one as the code changes (and we are primarily targeting spanish-speaking people). But of course this also means it can be easily translated to whichever language is necessary.

Even if I am a packager I still have some stuff to fix from the packaging itself, like letting datakeeper run with its own user. I just haven't got to it yet.

Certifications

We are working towards getting the system certified by ANMAT, which is the Argentinian equivalent for EEUU's FDA.

Funding

While all the people involved are working ad-honorem funding is still required in order to buy materials, create the prototypes, etc. The project created payments links with Mercado Pago (in spanish and argentinian pesos) and other bank methods (PDF, also in spanish).

Generate a test environment by creating Stretch/SID VM Really, use whatever suits you best, but please create an untrusted test environment for this one. In the current tutorial it assumes $hostname is stretch , which should be stretch or sid suite. In the install process mysql database is needed, therefore if mysql server is not setup, a password needs to be provided.
When OBS API database obs-api is created, we need to pick a password for it, provide opensuse . The obs-api package will configure apache2 https webserver (creating a dummy certificate for stretch ) to serve OBS webui.
Add stretch and obs aliases to localhost entry in your /etc/hosts file.
Enable worker by setting ENABLED=1 in /etc/default/obsworker
Try to connect to the web UI https://stretch/
Login into OBS webui, default login credentials: Admin/opensuse).
From command line tool, try to list projects in OBS

The package should go to dispatched state then get in blocked state while it downloads build dependencies from DoD link, eventually it should start building. Troubleshooting Currently we are facing few issues with web UI:

• Projects are not listed in the general project page (#839137)
• Packages are not listed in the project page
• Statistical Plots are not being drawn in monitor page nor system status in main page
• Text editor does not save modified files (#839133)
• Click on patchinfo/delete in a project page gets 404 (#839143)
• Search function does not work (#839137)

I started transitioning from 1024D to 4096R. The new key is available at: https://people.debian.org/~jak/pubkey.gpg and the keys.gnupg.net key server. The key consists of one master key and 3 sub keys (signing, encryption, authentication). The sub keys are stored on an OpenPGP v2 Smartcard. That s really cool, isn t it? Somehow it seems that GnuPG 1.4.18 also works with 4096R keys on this smartcard (I accidentally used it instead of gpg2 and it worked fine), although only GPG 2.0.13 and newer is supposed to work.

I ve done various bits with ARMMP and LAVA on this blog already, usually waiting until I ve got all the issues ironed out before writing it up. However, this time I m just going to do a dump of where it s at, how it works and what can be done. I m aware that LAVA can seem mysterious at first, the package description has improved enormously recently, thanks to exposure in Debian: LAVA is a continuous integration system for deploying operating systems onto physical and virtual hardware for running tests. Tests can be simple boot testing, bootloader testing and system level testing, although extra hardware may be required for some system tests. Results are tracked over time and data can be exported for further analysis. The LAVA documentation has a glossary of terms like result bundle and all the documentation is also available in the lava-server-doc package. The goal is to validate the dtbs built for the Debian ARMMP kernel. One of the most accessible ways to get the ARMMP kernel onto a board for testing is tftp using the Debian daily DI builds. Actually using the DI initrd can come later, once I ve got a complete preseed config so that the entire install can be automated. (There are some things to sort out in LAVA too before a full install can be deployed and booted but those are at an early stage.) It s enough at first to download the vmlinuz which is common to all ARMMP deployments, supply the relevant dtb, partner those with a minimal initrd and see if the board boots. The first change comes when this process is compared to how boards are commonly tested in LAVA with a zImage or uImage and all/most of the modules already built in. Packaged kernels won t necessarily raise a network interface or see the filesystem without modules, so the first step is to extend a minimal initramfs to include the armmp modules.

The minimal initramfs I selected is one often used within LAVA:

It has a u-boot header added, as most devices using this would be using u-boot and this makes it easier to debug boot failures as the initramfs doesn t need to have the header added, it can simply be downloaded to a local directory and passed to the board as a tftp location. To modify it, the u-boot header needs to be removed. Rather than assuming the size, the u-boot tools can (indirectly) show the size:

original Xen script (GPL-3+) I found it a bit confusing that i is used for extract by cpio, but that s how it is. Extract the minimal initramfs to a new directory:

Now what? Now send the combination to LAVA and test it. Results bundle for a local LAVA test job using this technique. (18k) submission JSON - uses file:// references, so would need modification before being submitted to LAVA elsewhere. complete log of the test job (72k) Those familiar with LAVA will spot that I haven't optimised this job, it boots the ARMMP kernel into a minimal initramfs and then expects to find apt and other tools. Actual tests providing useful results would use available tools, add more tools or specify a richer rootfs. The tests themselves are very quick (the job described above took 3 minutes to run) and don't need to be run particularly often, just once per board type per upload of the ARMMP kernel. LAVA can easily run those jobs in parallel and submission can be automated using authentication tokens and the lava-tool CLI. lava-tool can be installed without lava-server, so can be used in hooks for automated submissions. That doesn't cover all of the current DTBs (and includes many devices which have no DTBs) so there is plenty of scope for others to get involved. Hopefully, the above will help get people started with a suitable kernel+dtb+initrd and I'd encourage anyone interested to install lava-server and have a go at running test jobs based on those so that we start to build data about as many of the variants as possible. (If anyone in DI fancies producing a suitable initrd with modules alongside the DI initrd for armhf builds, or if anyone comes up with a patch for DI to do that, it would help enormously.) available from unstable, and hopefully soon from testing, too! The longer story: The xbmc package has been uninstallable and unbuildable in Debian unstable for quite some time. Mainly due to differing preferences of the XBMC project and Debian. Original XBMC source includes several embedded libraries, some patched to work with XBMC perfectly and to provide the best user experience the XBMC project prefers building XBMC with those libraries. In Debian, on the other hand, the recommended practice is not embedding libraries, but using the packaged versions instead to reduce the amount of security updates in case a library needs a security related fix, to save space on mirrors and to avoid divergence between the embedded versions of the libraries. One consequence of using externally packaged libraries is the need for making XMBC work with newer versions of the external libraries even when the embedded one would still work perfectly or (in some cases) there are even breakages due to changing APIs or new bugs in the library. XBMC depends on many libraries and the changes to them in Debian used to break one or another XBMC use case from time to time. The XBMC project received many direct bug reports from users of the Debian-shipped XBMC package which were harder than necessary to handle due to the lack of clear differentiation from the .deb packages provided directly by
them and using the embedded libraries. To help both users and developers the xbmc package starts using the XBMC from Debian name on the main screen and in the logs, the version number used inside the application is set to the Debian package s version, and README.Debian directs users of the package to Debian s BTS instead of XBMC s forums. The most notable difference between XBMC and XBMC from Debian is that XBMC uses
its embedded patched FFmpeg, while XBMC from Debian uses libav. If movies play too slow, too fast, without sound or too loud, you should definitely check BTS first. Happy Holidays and don t stay too much in front of the screen if XBMC from Debian happens to work for hours without any crash!

For writing tests for GVFS (current tests, proposed improvements) I want to run Samba as normal user, so that we can test gvfs smb backend without root privileges and thus can run them safely and conveniently in a make check environment for developers and in JHBuild for continuous integration testing. Before these tests could only run under gvfs-testbed, which needs root. Unlike other servers such as ssh or ftp, this turned out surprisingly non-obvious and hard, so I want to document it in this blog post for posterity s benefit. Running the server Running smbd itself is mainly an exercise of figuring out all the options that you need to set; Alex Larsson and I had some fun figuring out all the quirks and hiccups that happen between Ubuntu s and Fedora s packaging and 3.6 vs. 4.0, but finally arrived at something working. First, you need to create an empty directory where smbd can put all its databases and state files in. For tests you would use mkdtemp(), but for easier reading I just assume mkdir /tmp/samba here. The main knowledge is in the Samba configuration file, let s call it /tmp/smb.conf:

For running this as a normal user you need to set a port > 1024, so this uses 1445 to resemble the original (privileged) port 445. The map to guest line makes anonymous logins work on Fedora/Samba 4.0 (I m not sure whether it s a distribution or a version issue). Don t ask about dir vs. directory , that s an inconsistency in Samba; with above names it works on both 3.6 and 4.0. We use the old smbpasswd backend as shipping large tdb files is usually too inconvenient and brittle for test suites. I created an smbpasswd file by running smbpasswd on a real Samba installation, and then using pdbedit to convert it to a smbpasswd file:

sudo smbpasswd -a martin
sudo pdbedit -i tdbsam:/var/lib/samba/passdb.tdb -e smbpasswd:/tmp/smbpasswd

The result for password foo is

myuser:0:XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX:AC8E657F83DF82BEEA5D43BDAF7800CC:[U          ]:LCT-507C14C7:

which you are welcome to copy&paste (you can replace myuser with any valid user name, of course). This also defines two shares, one public, one authenticated. You need to create the directories and populate them a bit:

Now you can run the server with

smbd -iFS -s /tmp/smb.conf

The main problem with this approach is that smbd exits ( Server exit (failed to receive smb request) ) after a client terminates, so you need to write your tests in a way to only run one connection/request per test, or to start smbd in a loop. Running the client If you merely use the smbclient command line tool, this is rather simple: It has a -p option for specifying the port:

$ smbclient -p 1445 //localhost/private

In the case of gvfs it wasn t so simple, however. Surprisingly, libsmbclient does not have an API to set the port, it always assumes 445. smbclient itself uses some internal libcli API which does have a way to change the port, but it s not exposed through libsmbclient. However, Alex and I found some mailing list posts ([1], [2]) that mention $LIBSMB_PROG, and it s also mentioned in smbclient s manpage. It doesn t quite work as advertised in the second ML post (you can t set it to smbd, smbd apparently doesn t speak the socket protocol over stdin/stdout), and it s not being used anywhere in the current Samba sources, but what does work is to use good old netcat:

export LIBSMB_PROG="nc localhost 1445"

with that, you can use smbclient or any program using libsmbclient to talk to our test smb server running as user.
