Freexian Collaborators: Monthly report about Debian Long Term Support, July 2026 (by Santiago Ruano Rinc n)

The Debian LTS Team, funded by Freexian s Debian LTS offering, is pleased to report its activities for July.

Activity summary During the month of July, 23 contributors have been paid to work on Debian LTS (links to individual contributor reports are located below). The team released 52 DLAs fixing 2159 CVEs. In July, the Debian Stable Release Managers published the last point release of Debian 12 ( bookworm ), after which the Debian LTS team took full responsibility of Debian 12. This completes the handover from the Security Team, that took place in June. This also marks the second month in a row where the Debian LTS has been focusing on two simultaneous Debian releases. Other than Debian 12, the team is maintaining Debian 11 ( bullseye ), which will reach the end of its Long Term Support on 31 August 2026. After that date, Freexian will continue the security support under the Extended LTS offer. The team published several notable updates:
  • jq (DLA 4662-1 and DLA 4661-1) prepared by Andreas Henriksson in collaboration with Jochen Sprickerhof, addressing multiple vulnerabilities.
  • Several updates for the different linux supported versions prepared by Ben Hutchings, in collaboration with Emilio Pozuelo Monfort. Other than the regular security advisories: DLA 4664-1, DLA 4665-1, DLA 4671-1, DLA 4688-1, and DLA 4700-1, Ben started preparing packages of 6.12 via bookworm-backports.
  • nginx (DLA 4667-1), updated for bookworm by Carlos Henrique Lima Melara, as a follow up of the bullseye update (DLA 4660-1), that was prepared in June.
  • grub2/bullseye (DLA 4685-1), prepared by Emilio. Other than addressing several security issues, this DLA was needed for being able to update the shim boot loader.
  • samba (DLA 4692-1), uploaded by Markus Koschany, to fix several security flaws in bullseye, including issues that could yield to remote code execution.
  • imagemagick (DLA 4680-1 and DLA 4696-1), prepared by Bastien Roucari s, addressing several issues that could lead to denial of service, information disclosure or potentially arbitrary code execution in some scenarios.
  • poppler (DLA 4709-1), by Guilhem Moulin, fixing several vulnerabilities.
  • nss (DLA-4694-1), by Jochen, fixing flaws that may result in or denial of service or potentially the execution of arbitrary code.
Contributions from outside the LTS Team: The LTS Team has also contributed with updates to the latest Debian releases:
  • Bastien also proposed two updates for imagemagick. The first one released as DSA 6383-1, and the second as a trixie point update proposal (#1142554).

  • Andreas also prepared an upload of package atril for trixie, which was handled by the security team as DSA-6349-1.
  • Besides publishing DLA-4620-1 for package apache Bastien also prepared an upload for trixie, which was handled by the security team as DSA-6323-1.
  • Tobi uploaded package mesa to trixie and bookworm.
  • Thorsten fixed some (not security related but RC) issues in package dahdi-linux. This was in preparation to fix lots of security issues in asterisk. Unfortunately the maintainer ignored the corresponding debdiff and prefered to upload a new upstream version. Anyway, the concerns of the security team about security support of asterisk could be overcome and asterisk can migrate to tesing and again be part of a Debian release.

Activity summary During the month of May, 21 contributors have been paid to work on Debian LTS (links to individual contributor reports are located below). The team released 56 DLAs fixing 877 CVEs. May was a much busier month than usual, especially due to the disclosed vulnerabilities on linux regarding Local Privilege Escalation (LPE), that included public proof-of-concept (PoC) exploits. These reports of course impacted Debian as a whole, and the situation warrants a special mention to the Kernel Team, especially Ben Hutching and Salvatore Bonaccorso, who faced the pace and released linux packages on a weekly basis. On the LTS side, the Front Desk team also triaged a significant flow of high severity CVEs. It is also important to note that Debian 12 ( bookworm ) will be handed over to the LTS Team on June 11th. Utkarsh Gupta: FOSS Activites in February 2026

Here s my monthly but brief update about the activities I ve done in the FOSS world.

Debian
Whilst I didn t get a chance to do much, here are still a few things that I worked on:
  • Uploaded node-lodash/4.17.21+dfsg+~cs8.31.198.20210220-10 to fix CVE-2025-13465 in unstable. Pinged Xavier and Praveen to see how they feel about the backport for the stable releases.
  • Assited a few folks in getting their patches submitted via Salsa.
    • Reviewing pyenv MR for Ujjwal.
    • Reviewing and assisting Anshul with his Golang stuff.
  • Mentoring for newcomers.
  • Started to be a bit involved with DC 26 bits.
  • Moderation of -project mailing list.

Ubuntu
I joined Canonical to work on Ubuntu full-time back in February 2021. Whilst I can t give a full, detailed list of things I did, here s a quick TL;DR of what I did:
  • Successfully released Resolute Snapshot 4!
    • This one was also done without the ISO tracker and cdimage access.
    • We also worked very hard to build and promote all the image in due time.
    • This was one done with the Test Observer. The first one.
  • Worked further on the whole artifact signing story for cdimage.
  • Assisted a bunch of folks with my Archive Admin and Release team hats to:
    • Review and grant FFes.
    • Coordinating weekly syncs.
    • Promoting binaries to main.
    • Taking care of package removals and so on.
  • Was pretty occupied with the new release processs architecture.

Debian (E)LTS
This month I have worked 42 hours on Debian Long Term Support (LTS) and on its sister Extended LTS project and did the following things:

Released Security Updates

Work in Progress
  • knot-resolver: Affected by CVE-2023-26249, CVE-2023-46317, and CVE-2022-40188, leading to Denial of Service.
  • ruby-rack: There were multiple vulnerabilities reported in Rack, leading to DoS (memory exhaustion) and proxy bypass.
    • [ELTS]: I ve partially reviewed patches by Bastien but whilst doing so, new ones came up for all the releases.
    • [sid]: Uploaded ruby-rack/3.2.5-1 to unstable to fix the new CVEs, CVE-2026-25500 and CVE-2026-22860.
    • [stable]: Prepared the upload for stable releases, as requested by the Security Team. Will upload them in March.
    • [bullseye]: Backport for CVE-2026-22860 hasn t been as trivial as it appears to be. There are test failures, which aren t really ignore-able:
      The tests requests /cgi/../test, which File.expand_path resolves to <root>/test - firmly inside @root. With the old code, it hit the return unless path_info.include? ".." guard and fell through to 403. But it would also have returned early via start_with?(@root) being true
    • anyway, this needs more investigation - I ll continue to do so in March as P1.
  • node-lodash: Affected by CVE-2025-13465, lrototype pollution in baseUnset function.
    • [stable]: The patch for trixie and bookworm are ready and have been awaiting the maintainer review.
    • [LTS]: The bullseye upload will follow once the stable uploads are in and ACK d by the SRMs.
  • vlc: Affected by CVE-2025-51602, an out-of-bounds read and denial of service via a crafted 0x01 response from an MMS server.
    • [LTS]: 3.0.23 backport is ready but not tested. I ll get this over the line in March.
    • [ELTS]: 3.0.23 backport is ready but not very clean. Would like to complete LTS and get back to this.

Other Activities
  • [LTS] Coordinated the libvirt sitaution with Ben Hutchings. The upload has already been prepped, will upload in March.
  • [ELTS] Continued to help Bastien and Markus with the tomcat9 regression for buster.
  • [ELTS] Partially reviewed ruby-rack CVEs to help Bastien. This took more time than expected with some more develpments hapening at the end of the month - new CVEs that aren t as easy to backport as I expected them to be. Will continue with these in March.

Freexian Collaborators: Monthly report about Debian Long Term Support, January 2026 (by Santiago Ruano Rinc n)

The Debian LTS Team, funded by Freexian s Debian LTS offering, is pleased to report its activities for January.

Activity summary During the month of January, 20 contributors have been paid to work on Debian LTS (links to individual contributor reports are located below). The team released 33 DLAs fixing 216 CVEs. The team continued preparing security updates in its usual rhythm. Beyond the updates targeting Debian 11 ( bullseye ), which is the current release under LTS, the team also proposed updates for more recent releases (Debian 12 ( bookworm ) and Debian 13 ( trixie )), including Debian unstable. We highlight several notable security updates here below. Notable security updates:
  • python3.9, prepared by Andrej Shadura (DLA-4455-1), fixing multiple vulnerabilities in the Python interpreter.
  • php, prepared by Guilhem Moulin (DLA-4447-1), fixing two vulnerabilities that could yield to request forgery or denial of service.
  • apache2, prepared by Bastien Roucari s DLA-4452-1, fixing four CVEs.
  • linux-6.1, prepared by Ben Hutchings (DLA-4436-1), as a regular update of the linux 6.1 backport to Debian 11.
  • python-django, prepared by Chris Lamb (DLA-4458-1), resolving multiple vulnerabilities.
  • firefox-esr prepared by Emilio Pozuelo Monfort (DLA-4439-1)
  • gnupg2, prepared by Roberto S nchez (DLA-4437-1), fixing multiple issues, including CVE-2025-68973 that could potentially be exploited to execute arbitrary code.
  • apache-log4j2, prepared by Markus Koschany (DLA-4444-1)
  • ceph, prepared by Utkarsh Gupta (DLA-4460-1)
  • inetutils, prepared by Andreas Henriksson (DLA-4453-1), fixing an authentication bypass in telnetd.
Moreover, Sylvain Beucler studied the security support status of p7zip, a fork of 7zip that has become unmaintained upstream. To avoid letting the users continue using an unsupported package, Sylvain has investigated a path forward in collaboration with the security team and the 7zip maintainer, looking to replace p7zip with 7zip. It is to note however that 7zip developers don t reveal the information about the patches that fix CVEs, making it difficult to backport single patches to fix vulnerabilities in Debian released versions. Contributions from outside the LTS Team: Thunderbird, prepared by maintainer Christoph Goehre. The DLA (DLA-4442-1) was published by Emilio. The LTS Team has also contributed with updates to the latest Debian releases:
  • Bastien uploaded gpsd to unstable, and proposed updates for trixie #1126121 and bookworm #1126168 to fix two CVEs.
  • Bastien also prepared the imagemagick updates for trixie and bookworm, released as DSA-6111-1, along with the bullseye update DLA-4448-1.
  • Chris proposed a trixie point update for python-django (#112646), and the work for bookworm was completed in February (#1079454). The longstanding bookworm update required tracking down a regression in the django-storages packages.
  • Markus prepared tomcat10 updates for trixie and bookworm (DSA-6120-1), and tomcat11 for trixie (DSA-6121-1)
  • Thorsten Alteholz prepared bookworm point updates for zvbi (#1126167) to fix five CVEs; taglib (#1126273) to fix one CVE; and libuev (#1126370) to fix one CVE.
  • Utkarsh prepared an unstable update of node-lodash to fix one CVE.
Other than the work related to updates, Sylvain made several improvements to the documentation and tooling used by the team.

Utkarsh Gupta: FOSS Activites in January 2026

Here s my monthly but brief update about the activities I ve done in the FOSS world.

Debian
Whilst I didn t get a chance to do much, here are still a few things that I worked on:
  • A few discussions with the new DFSG team, et al.
  • Assited a few folks in getting their patches submitted via Salsa.
  • Reviewing pyenv MR for Ujjwal.
  • Mentoring for newcomers.
  • Moderation of -project mailing list.

Ubuntu
I joined Canonical to work on Ubuntu full-time back in February 2021. Whilst I can t give a full, detailed list of things I did, here s a quick TL;DR of what I did:
  • Successfully released Resolute Snapshot 3!
    • This one was also done without the ISO tracker and cdimage access.
    • We also worked very hard to build and promote all the image in due time.
  • Worked further on the whole artifact signing story for cdimage.
  • Assisted a bunch of folks with my Archive Admin and Release team hats to:
    • Helped in EOL ing Plucky.
    • Starting to help with the upcoming 24.04.4 release.
  • With that, the mid-cycle sprints are around the corner, so quite busy preparing for that.

Debian (E)LTS
This month I have worked 59 hours on Debian Long Term Support (LTS) and on its sister Extended LTS project and did the following things:

Released Security Updates

Work in Progress
  • knot-resolver: Affected by CVE-2023-26249, CVE-2023-46317, and CVE-2022-40188, leading to Denial of Service.
  • ruby-rack: There were multiple vulnerabilities reported in Rack, leading to DoS (memory exhaustion) and proxy bypass.
    • [ELTS]: After completing the work for LTS myself, Bastien picked it up for ELTS and reached out about an upstream regression and we ve been doing some exchanges. Bastien has done most of the work backporting the patches but needs a review and help backporting CVE-2025-61771. Haven t made much progress since last month and will carry it over.
  • node-lodash: Affected by CVE-2025-13465, lrototype pollution in baseUnset function.
    • [stable]: The patch for trixie and bookworm are ready but haven t been uploaded yet as I d like for the unstable upload to settle a bit before I proceed with stable uploads.
    • [LTS]: The bullseye upload will follow once the stable uploads are in and ACK d by the SRMs.
  • xrdp: Affected by CVE-2025-68670, leading to a stack-based buffer overflow.

Other Activities
  • [ELTS] Helped Bastien Roucaries debug a tomcat9 regression for buster.
    • I spent quite a lot of time trying to help Bastien (with Markus and Santiago involved via mail thread) by reproducing the regression that the user(s) reported.
    • I also helped suggest a path forward by vendoring everything, which I was then requested to also help perform.
    • Whilst doing that, I noticed circular dependency hellhole and suggested another path forward by backporting bnd and its dependencies as separate NEW packages.
    • Bastien liked the idea and is going to work on that but preferred to revert the update to remedy the immediate regressions reported. I further helped him in reviewing his update. This conversation happened on #debian-elts IRC channel.
  • [LTS] Assisted Ben Hutchings with his question about the next possible steps with a plausible libvirt regression caused by the Linux kernel update. This was a thread on debian-lts@ mailing list.
  • [LTS] Attended the monthly LTS meeting on IRC. Summary here.

  • python-apt (DLA 4408-1), prepared by Utkarsh Gupta, in coordination with the Debian Security Team and Julian Andres Klode, the apt s maintainer.
  • libpng1.6 (DLA-4396-1), published by Tobias Frost, completing the work started the previous month.
Notable non-security updates:
  • tzdata (DLA-4403-1), prepared by Emilio, including the latest changes to the leap second list and its expiry date, which was set for the end of December.

Activity summary During the month of November, 18 contributors have been paid to work on Debian LTS (links to individual contributor reports are located below). The LTS Team kept going with the usual cadence of preparing security updates for Debian 11 bullseye , but also for Debian 12 bookworm , Debian 13 trixie and even Debian unstable. As in previous months, we are pleased to say that there have been multiple contributions of LTS uploads by Debian Fellows outside the regular LTS Team. Notable security updates:
  • Guilhem Moulin prepared DLA 4365-1 for unbound, a caching DNS resolver, fixing a cache poisoning vulnerability that could lead to domain hijacking.
  • Another update related to DNS software was made by Andreas Henriksson. Andreas completed the work on bind9, released as DLA 4364-1 to fix cache poisoning and Denial of Service (DoS) vulnerabilities.
  • Chris Lamb released DLA 4374-1 to fix a potential arbitrary code execution vulnerability in pdfminer, a tool for extracting information from PDF documents.
  • Ben Hutchings published a regular security update for the linux 6.1 bullseye backport, as DLA 4379-1.
  • A couple of other important recurrent updates were prepared by Emilio Pozuelo, who handled firefox-esr and thunderbird (in collaboration with Christoph Goehre), published as DLAs DLA 4370-1 and DLA 4372-1, respectively.

  • Thomas Goirand uploaded a bullseye update for keystone and swift
  • Jeremy B cha prepared the bullseye update for gst-plugins-base1.0

  • Carlos Henrique Lima Melara filed a bookworm point update request for gdk-pixbuf to fix CVE-2025-7345, a heap buffer overflow vulnerability that could lead to arbitrary code execution.
  • Daniel Leidert prepared bookworm and trixie updates for r-cran-gh to fix CVE-2025-54956, an issue that may expose user credentials in HTTP responses.
  • Along with the bullseye updates for unbound mentioned above, Guilhem helped to prepare the trixie update for unbound.
  • In collaboration with Lukas M rdian, Tobias Frost prepared trixie and bookworm updates for log4cxx, the C++ port of the logging framework for JAVA.
  • Jochen Sprickerhof prepared a bookworm update for syslog-ng.
  • Utkarsh completed the bookworm update for wordpress, addressing multiple security issues in the popular blogging tool.

Additionally, LTS Team member Santiago Ruano Rinc n proposed and implemented an improvement to the debian-security-support package. This package is available so that interested users can quickly determine if any installed packages are subject to limited security support or are excluded entirely from security support. However, there was not previously a way to identify explicitly supported packages, which has become necessary to note exceptions to broad exclusion policies (e.g., those which apply to substantial package groups, like modules belonging to the Go and Rust language ecosystems). Santiago s work has enabled the notation of exceptions to these exclusions, thus ensuring that users of debian-security-support have accurate status information concerning installed packages.

DebCamp 25 Security Tracker Sprint The previously announced security tracker sprint took place at DebCamp from 7-13 July. Participants included 8 members of the standing LTS Team, 2 active Debian Developers with an interest in LTS, 3 community members, and 1 member of the Debian Security Team (who provided guidance and reviews on proposed changes to the security tracker); participation was a mix of in person at the venue in Brest, France and remote. During the days of the sprint, the team tackled a wide range of bugs and improvements, mostly targeting the security tracker. The sprint participants worked on the following items: As can be seen from the above list, only a small number of changes were brought to completion during the sprint week itself. Given the very compressed timeframe involved, the broad scope of tasks which were under consideration, and the highly sensitive data managed by the security tracker, this is not entirely unexpected and in no way diminishes the great work done by the sprint participants. The LTS Team would especially like to thank Salvatore Bonaccorso of the Debian Security Team for making himself available throughout the sprint to answer questions, for providing guidance on the work, and for helping the work by reviewing and merging the MRs which were able to merged during the sprint itself. Dimitri John Ledkov: Achieving actually full disk encryption of UEFI ESP at rest with TCG OPAL, FIPS, LUKS

Achieving full disk encryption using FIPS, TCG OPAL and LUKS to encrypt UEFI ESP on bare-metal and in VMs
Many security standards such as CIS and STIG require to protect information at rest. For example, NIST SP 800-53r5 SC-28 advocate to use cryptographic protection, offline storage and TPMs to enhance protection of information confidentiality and/or integrity.Traditionally to satisfy such controls on portable devices such as laptops one would utilize software based Full Disk Encryption - Mac OS X FileVault, Windows Bitlocker, Linux cryptsetup LUKS2. In cases when FIPS cryptography is required, additional burden would be placed onto these systems to operate their kernels in FIPS mode.Trusted Computing Group works on establishing many industry standards and specifications, which are widely adopted to improve safety and security of computing whilst keeping it easy to use. One of their most famous specifications them is TCG TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module). TPMs are now widely available on most devices and help to protect secret keys and attest systems. For example, most software full disk encryption solutions can utilise TCG TPM to store full disk encryption keys providing passwordless, biometric or pin-base ways to unlock the drives as well as attesting that system have not been modified or compromised whilst offline.TCG Storage Security Subsystem Class: Opal Specification is a set of specifications for features of data storage devices. The authors and contributors to OPAL are leading and well trusted storage manufacturers such as Samsung, Western Digital, Seagate Technologies, Dell, Google, Lenovo, IBM, Kioxia, among others. One of the features that Opal Specification enables is self-encrypting drives which becomes very powerful when combined with pre-boot authentication. Out of the box, such drives always and transparently encrypt all disk data using hardware acceleration. To protect data one can enter UEFI firmware setup (BIOS) to set NVMe single user password (or user + administrator/recovery passwords) to encrypt the disk encryption key. If one's firmware didn't come with such features, one can also use SEDutil to inspect and configure all of this. Latest release of major Linux distributions have SEDutil already packaged.Once password is set, on startup, pre-boot authentication will request one to enter password - prior to booting any operating systems. It means that full disk is actually encrypted, including the UEFI ESP and all operating systems that are installed in case of dual or multi-boot installations. This also prevents tampering with ESP, UEFI bootloaders and kernels which with traditional software-based encryption often remain unencrypted and accessible. It also means one doesn't have to do special OS level repartitioning, or installation steps to ensure all data is encrypted at rest.What about FIPS compliance? Well, the good news is that majority of the OPAL compliant hard drives and/or security sub-chips do have FIPS 140-3 certification. Meaning they have been tested by independent laboratories to ensure they do in-fact encrypt data. On the CMVP website one can search for module name terms "OPAL" or "NVMe" or name of hardware vendor to locate FIPS certificates.Are such drives widely available? Yes. For example, a common Thinkpad X1 gen 11 has OPAL NVMe drives as standard, and they have FIPS certification too. Thus, it is likely in your hardware fleet these are already widely available. Use sedutil to check if MediaEncrypt and LockingSupported features are available.Well, this is great for laptops and physical servers, but you may ask - what about public or private cloud? Actually, more or less the same is already in-place in both. On CVMP website all major clouds have their disk encryption hardware certified, and all of them always encrypt all Virtual Machines with FIPS certified cryptography without an ability to opt-out. One is however in full control of how the encryption keys are managed: cloud-provider or self-managed (either with a cloud HSM or KMS or bring your own / external). See these relevant encryption options and key management docs for GCP, Azure, AWS. But the key takeaway without doing anything, at rest, VMs in public cloud are always encrypted and satisfy NIST SP 800-53 controls.What about private cloud? Most Linux based private clouds ultimately use qemu typically with qcow2 virtual disk images. Qemu supports user-space encryption of qcow2 disk, see this manpage. Such encryption encrypts the full virtual machine disk, including the bootloader and ESP. And it is handled entirely outside of the VM on the host - meaning the VM never has access to the disk encryption keys. Qemu implements this encryption entirely in userspace using gnutls, nettle, libgcrypt depending on how it was compiled. This also means one can satisfy FIPS requirements entirely in userspace without a Linux kernel in FIPS mode. Higher level APIs built on top of qemu also support qcow2 disk encryption, as in projects such as libvirt and OpenStack Cinder.If you carefully read the docs, you may notice that agent support is explicitly sometimes called out as not supported or not mentioned. Quite often agents running inside the OS may not have enough observability to them to assess if there is external encryption. It does mean that monitoring above encryption options require different approaches - for example monitor your cloud configuration using tools such as Wiz and Orca, rather than using agents inside individual VMs. For laptop / endpoint security agents, I do wish they would start gaining capability to report OPAL SED availability and status if it is active or not.What about using software encryption none-the-less on top of the above solutions? It is commonly referred to double or multiple encryption. There will be an additional performance impact, but it can be worthwhile. It really depends on what you define as data at rest for yourself and which controls you need. If one has a dual-boot laptop, and wants to keep one OS encrypted whilst booted into the other, it can perfectly reasonable to encrypted the two using separate software encryption keys. In addition to the OPAL encryption of the ESP. For more targeted per-file / per-folder encryption, one can look into using gocryptfs which is the best successor to the once popular, but now deprecated eCryptfs (amazing tool, but has fallen behind in development and can lead to data loss).All of the above mostly talks about cryptographic encryption, which only provides confidentially but not data integrity. To protect integrity, one needs to choose how to maintain that. dm-verity is a good choice for read-only and rigid installations. For read-write workloads, it may be easier to deploy ZFS or Btrfs instead. If one is using filesystems without a built-in integrity support such as XFS or Ext4, one can retrofit integrity layer to them by using dm-integrity (either standalone, or via dm-luks/cryptsetup --integrity option).

If one has a lot of estate and a lot of encryption keys to keep track off a key management solution is likely needed. The most popular solution is likely the one from Thales Group marketed under ChiperTrust Data Security Platform (previously Vormetric), but there are many others including OEM / Vendor / Hardware / Cloud specific or agnostic solutions.

Something of particular noteworthiness is that LTS contributor Carlos Henrique Lima Melara discovered a regression in the upstream fix for CVE-2023-2753 in curl. The corrective action which he took included providing a patch to upstream, uploading a stable update of curl, and further updating the version of curl in LTS. DebConf, the annual Debian Conference, is coming up in July and, as is customary each year, the week preceding the conference will feature an event called DebCamp. The DebCamp week provides an opportunity for teams and other interested groups/individuals to meet together in person in the same venue as the conference itself, with the purpose of doing focused work, often called sprints . LTS coordinator Roberto C. S nchez has announced that the LTS Team is planning to hold a sprint primarily focused on the Debian security tracker and the associated tooling used by the LTS Team and the Debian Security Team.

Freexian, the entity behind the management of the Debian LTS project, has been working for some time now on the development of an advanced CI platform for Debian-based distributions, called Debusine. Recently, Debusine has reached a level of feature implementation that makes it very usable. Some members of the LTS Team have been using Debusine informally, and during May LTS coordinator Santiago Ruano Rinc n has made a call for the team to help with testing of Debusine, and to help evaluate its suitability for the LTS Team to eventually begin using as the primary mechanism for uploading packages into Debian. Team members who have started using Debusine are providing valuable feedback to the Debusine development team, thus helping to improve the platform for all users. Actually, a number of updates, for both bullseye and bookworm, made during the month of May were handled using Debusine, e.g. rubygems s DLA-4163-1. By the way, if you are a Debian Developer, you can easily test Debusine following the instructions found at https://wiki.debian.org/DebusineDebianNet. DebConf, the annual Debian Conference, is coming up in July and, as is customary each year, the week preceding the conference will feature an event called DebCamp. The LTS team continues to welcome the collaboration of maintainers and other interested parties from outside the regular team. In April, we had external updates contributed by: Yadd - lemonldap-ng and Moritz Schlarb - libapache2-mod-auth-openidc A point release of the current stable Debian 12 (codename bookworm ) is planned for mid-May and several LTS contributors have prepared packages for this update, many of them prepared in conjunction with related LTS updates of the same packages:
  • glib2.0, haproxy, imagemagick, poppler, and python-h11, prepared by Adrian Bunk
  • rubygems, prepared by Lucas Kanashiro
  • ruby3.1 (in collaboration with Lucas Kanashiro), twitter-bootstrap3, twitterboot-strap4, wpa, and erlang, prepared by Bastien Roucari s (corresponding updates of twitter-bootstrap3 and twitter-bootstrap4 were also uploaded to Debian unstable)
  • abseil, prepared by Tobias Frost (a corresponding update was also uploaded to Debian unstable)
  • vips, prepared by Guilhem Moulin
Additional updates of ruby3.3 and rubygems were prepared for Debian unstable by Lucas Kanashiro. And finally, a highlight of our continued commitment to enhancing long term support efforts in upstream projects. Freexian, as the primary entity behind the management and execution of the LTS project, has partnered with Invisible Things Lab to extend the upstream security support of Xen 4.17, which is shipped in Debian 12 bookworm (the current stable release). This partnership will result in significantly improved lifecycle support for users of Xen on bookworm, and members of the LTS team will play a part in this endeavour.     • vim, prepared by Sean Whitton, fixed a multitude of vulnerabilities, including many application crashes, buffer overflows, and out-of-bounds reads
The recent trend of contributions from contributors external to the formal LTS team has continued. LTS contributor Sylvain Beucler reviewed and facilitated an update to openvpn proposed by Aquila Macedo, resulting in the publication of DLA 4079-1. Thanks a lot to Aquila for preparing the update. The LTS Team continues to make contributions to the current stable Debian release, Debian 12 (codename bookworm ). LTS contributor Bastien Roucari s prepared a stable upload of krb5 to ensure that fixes made in the LTS release, Debian 11 (codename bullseye ) were also made available to stable users. Additional stable updates, for tomcat10 and jetty9, were prepared by LTS contributor Markus Koschany. And, finally, LTS contributor Utkarsh Gupta prepared stable updates for rails and ruby-rack. LTS contributor Emilio Pozuelo Monfort has continued his ongoing improvements to the Debian security tracker and its associated tooling, making the data contained in the tracker more reliable and easing interaction with it. The ckeditor3 package, which has been EOL by upstream for some time, is still depended upon by the PHP Horde packages in Debian. Sylvain, along with Bastien, did monumental work in coordinating with maintainers, security team fellows, and other Debian teams, to formally declare the EOL of the ckeditor3 package in Debian 11 and in Debian 12. Additionally, as a result of this work Sylvain has worked towards the removal of ckeditor3 as a dependency by other packages in order to facilitate the complete removal of ckeditor3 from all future Debian releases.
