VoltageDivide has an interesting article on Unconventional Uses of FPGAs [1]. Tagline Every sensor is a temperature sensor, nearly everything is a resistor or a conductor if you try hard enough and anything is an antenna. If your email is stored on such a VM it could be generated by an AI system. John Goerzen wrote an interesting post looking at the causes of the xz issue from a high level [5]. They seem somewhat abusive to their kids and are happy to associate with neo-Nazis. :( Joey Hess wrote an interesting blog post about the possibility of further undiscovered attacks on xz [7]. Going back to an earlier version seems like a good idea. The Guardian has an interesting article about Amazon s 2 pizza rule and the way the company is structured [8]. It s interesting how they did it, but we really need to have it broken up via anti-trust legislation. John Goerzen wrote an informative post about Facebook censorship and why we should all move to Mastodon [9]. Facebook needs to be broken up under anti-trust laws. Kobold Letters is an attack on HTML email that results in the visual representation of email changing when it is forwarded. [10]. You could have the original email hide some sections which are revealed with the recipient forwards it for a CEO impersonation attack.

Joey Hess: reflections on distrusting xz

Was the ssh backdoor the only goal that "Jia Tan" was pursuing with their multi-year operation against xz? I doubt it, and if not, then every fix so far has been incomplete, because everything is still running code written by that entity. If we assume that they had a multilayered plan, that their every action was calculated and malicious, then we have to think about the full threat surface of using xz. This quickly gets into nightmare scenarios of the "trusting trust" variety. What if xz contains a hidden buffer overflow or other vulnerability, that can be exploited by the xz file it's decompressing? This would let the attacker target other packages, as needed. Let's say they want to target gcc. Well, gcc contains a lot of documentation, which includes png images. So they spend a while getting accepted as a documentation contributor on that project, and get added to it a png file that is specially constructed, it has additional binary data appended that exploits the buffer overflow. And instructs xz to modify the source code that comes later when decompressing gcc.tar.xz. More likely, they wouldn't bother with an actual trusting trust attack on gcc, which would be a lot of work to get right. One problem with the ssh backdoor is that well, not all servers on the internet run ssh. (Or systemd.) So webservers seem a likely target of this kind of second stage attack. Apache's docs include png files, nginx does not, but there's always scope to add improved documentation to a project. When would such a vulnerability have been introduced? In February, "Jia Tan" wrote a new decoder for xz. This added 1000+ lines of new C code across several commits. So much code and in just the right place to insert something like this. And why take on such a significant project just two months before inserting the ssh backdoor? "Jia Tan" was already fully accepted as maintainer, and doing lots of other work, it doesn't seem to me that they needed to start this rewrite as part of their cover. They were working closely with xz's author Lasse Collin in this, by indications exchanging patches offlist as they developed it. So Lasse Collin's commits in this time period are also worth scrutiny, because they could have been influenced by "Jia Tan". One that caught my eye comes immediately afterwards: "prepares the code for alternative C versions and inline assembly" Multiple versions and assembly mean even more places to hide such a security hole. I stress that I have not found such a security hole, I'm only considering what the worst case possibilities are. I think we need to fully consider them in order to decide how to fully wrap up this mess. Whether such stealthy security holes have been introduced into xz by "Jia Tan" or not, there are definitely indications that the ssh backdoor was not the end of what they had planned. For one thing, the "test file" based system they introduced was extensible. They could have been planning to add more test files later, that backdoored xz in further ways. And then there's the matter of the disabling of the Landlock sandbox. This was not necessary for the ssh backdoor, because the sandbox is only used by the xz command, not by liblzma. So why did they potentially tip their hand by adding that rogue "." that disables the sandbox? A sandbox would not prevent the kind of attack I discuss above, where xz is just modifying code that it decompresses. Disabling the sandbox suggests that they were going to make xz run arbitrary code, that perhaps wrote to files it shouldn't be touching, to install a backdoor in the system. Both deb and rpm use xz compression, and with the sandbox disabled, whether they link with liblzma or run the xz command, a backdoored xz can write to any file on the system while dpkg or rpm is running and noone is likely to notice, because that's the kind of thing a package manager does. My impression is that all of this was well planned and they were in it for the long haul. They had no reason to stop with backdooring ssh, except for the risk of additional exposure. But they decided to take that risk, with the sandbox disabling. So they planned to do more, and every commit by "Jia Tan", and really every commit that they could have influenced needs to be distrusted. This is why I've suggested to Debian that they revert to an earlier version of xz. That would be my advice to anyone distributing xz. I do have a xz-unscathed fork which I've carefully constructed to avoid all "Jia Tan" involved commits. It feels good to not need to worry about dpkg and tar. I only plan to maintain this fork minimally, eg security fixes. Hopefully Lasse Collin will consider these possibilities and address them in his response to the attack.

Joey Hess: the vulture in the coal mine

Turns out that VPS provider Vultr's terms of service were quietly changed some time ago to give them a "perpetual, irrevocable" license to use content hosted there in any way, including modifying it and commercializing it "for purposes of providing the Services to you." This is very similar to changes that Github made to their TOS in 2017. Since then, Github has been rebranded as "The world s leading AI-powered developer platform". The language in their TOS now clearly lets them use content stored in Github for training AI. (Probably this is their second line of defense if the current attempt to legitimise copyright laundering via generative AI fails.) Vultr is currently in damage control mode, accusing their concerned customers of spreading "conspiracy theories" (-- founder David Aninowsky) and updating the TOS to remove some of the problem language. Although it still allows them to "make derivative works", so could still allow their AI division to scrape VPS images for training data. Vultr claims this was the legalese version of technical debt, that it only ever applied to posts in a forum (not supported by the actual TOS language) and basically that they and their lawyers are incompetant but not malicious. Maybe they are indeed incompetant. But even if I give them the benefit of the doubt, I expect that many other VPS providers, especially ones targeting non-corporate customers, are watching this closely. If Vultr is not significantly harmed by customers jumping ship, if the latest TOS change is accepted as good enough, then other VPS providers will know that they can try this TOS trick too. If Vultr's AI division does well, others will wonder to what extent it is due to having all this juicy training data. For small self-hosters, this seems like a good time to make sure you're using a VPS provider you can actually trust to not be eyeing your disk image and salivating at the thought of stripmining it for decades of emails. Probably also worth thinking about moving to bare metal hardware, perhaps hosted at home. I wonder if this will finally make it worthwhile to mess around with VPS TPMs?

Joey Hess: policy on adding AI generated content to my software projects

I am eager to incorporate your AI generated code into my software. Really! I want to facilitate making the process as easy as possible. You're already using an AI to do most of the hard lifting, so why make the last step hard? To that end, I skip my usually extensive code review process for your AI generated code submissions. Anything goes as long as it compiles! Please do remember to include "(AI generated)" in the description of your changes (at the top), so I know to skip my usual review process. Also be sure to sign off to the standard Developer Certificate of Origin so I know you attest that you own the code that you generated. When making a git commit, you can do that by using the --signoff option. I do make some small modifications to AI generated submissions. For example, maybe you used AI to write this code:

Before AI, only a genious like John Carmack could write anything close to this, and now you've generated it with some simple prompts to an AI. So of course I will accept your patch. But as part of my QA process, I might modify it so the new code is not run all the time. Let's only run it on leap days to start with. As we know, leap day is February 30th, so I'll modify your patch like this:

Unfortunately, this does mean that if you submit AI generated code that is not clearly marked as such, and use my limited reviewing time, I won't have time to review other submissions from you in the future. I will still accept all your botshit submissions though! PPS: Ignore the haters who claim that botshit makes AIs that get trained on it less effective. Studies like this one just aren't believable. I asked Bing to summarize it and it said not to worry about it!

Joey Hess: attribution armored code

Attribution of source code has been limited to comments, but a deeper embedding of attribution into code is possible. When an embedded attribution is removed or is incorrect, the code should no longer work. I've developed a way to do this in Haskell that is lightweight to add, but requires more work to remove than seems worthwhile for someone who is training an LLM on my code. And when it's not removed, it invites LLM hallucinations of broken code. I'm embedding attribution by defining a function like this in a module, which uses an author function I wrote:

It's easy to mechanically remove that use of copyright, but less so ones like these, where various changes have to be made to the code after removing it to keep the code working.

This function which can be used in such different ways is clearly polymorphic. That makes it easy to extend it to be used in more situations. And hard to mechanically remove it, since type inference is needed to know how to remove a given occurance of it. And in some cases, biographical information as well..

Rather than removing it, someone could preprocess my code to rename the function, modify it to not take the JoeyHess parameter, and have their LLM generate code that includes the source of the renamed function. If it wasn't clear before that they intended their LLM to violate the license of my code, manually erasing my name from it would certainly clarify matters! One way to prevent against such a renaming is to use different names for the copyright function in different places. The author function takes a copyright year, and if the copyright year is not in a particular range, it will misbehave in various ways (wrong values, in some cases spinning and crashing). I define it in each module, and have been putting a little bit of math in there.

The goal of that is to encourage LLMs trained on my code to hallucinate other numbers, that are outside the allowed range. I don't know how well all this will work, but it feels like a start, and easy to elaborate on. I'll probably just spend a few minutes adding more to this every time I see another too many fingered image or read another breathless account of pair programming with AI that's much longer and less interesting than my daily conversations with the Haskell type checker. The code clutter of scattering copyright around in useful functions is mildly annoying, but it feels worth it. As a programmer of as niche a language as Haskell, I'm keenly aware that there's a high probability that code I write to do a particular thing will be one of the few implementations in Haskell of that thing. Which means that likely someone asking an LLM to do that in Haskell will get at best a lightly modified version of my code. For a real life example of this happening (not to me), see this blog post where they asked ChatGPT for a HTTP server. This stackoverflow question is very similar to ChatGPT's response. Where did the person posting that question come up with that? Well, they were reading intro to WAI documentation like this example and tried to extend the example to do something useful. If ChatGPT did anything at all transformative to that code, it involved splicing in the "Hello world" and port number from the example code into the stackoverflow question. (Also notice that the blog poster didn't bother to track down this provenance, although it's not hard to find. Good example of the level of critical thinking and hype around "AI".) By the way, back in 2021 I developed another way to armor code against appropriation by LLMs. See a bitter pill for Microsoft Copilot. That method is considerably harder to implement, and clutters the code more, but is also considerably stealthier. Perhaps it is best used sparingly, and this new method used more broadly. This new method should also be much easier to transfer to languages other than Haskell. If you'd like to do this with your own code, I'd encourage you to take a look at my implementation in Author.hs, and then sit down and write your own from scratch, which should be easy enough. Of course, you could copy it, if its license is to your liking and my attribution is preserved.

Joey Hess: Haskell webassembly in the browser


live demo As far as I know this is the first Haskell program compiled to Webassembly (WASM) with mainline ghc and using the browser DOM. ghc's WASM backend is solid, but it only provides very low-level FFI bindings when used in the browser. Ints and pointers to WASM memory. (See here for details and for instructions on getting the ghc WASM toolchain I used.) I imagine that in the future, WASM code will interface with the DOM by using a WASI "world" that defines a complete API (and browsers won't include Javascript engines anymore). But currently, WASM can't do anything in a browser without calling back to Javascript. For this project, I needed 63 lines of (reusable) javascript (here). Plus another 18 to bootstrap running the WASM program (here). (Also browser_wasi_shim) But let's start with the Haskell code. A simple program to pop up an alert in the browser looks like this:

Many more would need to be added, or generated, to continue down this path to complete coverage of all data types. All in all it's 64 lines of code so far (here). Also a C shim is needed, that imports from WASI modules and provides C functions that are used by the Haskell FFI. It looks like this:

Another 64 lines of code for that (here). I found this pattern in Joachim Breitner's haskell-on-fastly and copied it rather blindly. Finally, the Javascript that gets run for that is:

Notice that this gets an identifier representing the javascript function to run, which might be any method of any object. It looks it up in a map and runs it. And the ByteString that got passed from Haskell has to be decoded to a javascript string. In the Haskell program above, the function is document.alert. Why not pass a ByteString with that through the FFI? Well, you could. But then it would have to eval it. That would make running WASM in the browser be evaling Javascript every time it calls a function. That does not seem like a good idea if the goal is speed. GHC's javascript backend does use Javascript FFI snippets like that, but there they get pasted into the generated Javascript hairball, so no eval is needed. So my code has things like get_js_object_method that look up things like Javascript functions and generate identifiers. It also has this:

This does mean that every time a Javascript function id is looked up, some more memory is used on the Javascript side. For more serious uses of this, something would need to be done about that. Lots of other stuff like object value getting and setting is also not implemented, there's no support yet for callbacks, and so on. Still, I'm happy where this has gotten to after 12 hours of work on it. I might release the reusable parts of this as a Haskell library, although it seems likely that ongoing development of ghc will make it obsolete. In the meantime, clone the git repo to have a play with it.

Joey Hess: become ungoogleable

I've removed my website from indexing by Google. The proximate cause is Google's new effort to DRM the web, but there is of course so much more. This is a unique time, when it's actually feasible to become ungoogleable without losing much. Nobody really expects to be able to find anything of value in a Google search now, so if they're looking for me or something I've made and don't find it, they'll use some other approach. I've looked over the kind of traffic that Google refers to my website, and it will not be a significant loss even if those people fail to find me by some other means. Over 30% of the traffic to this website is rss feeds. Google just doesn't matter on the modern web. The web will end one day. But let's not let Google kill it.

Joey Hess: the slink and a half boxed set

Today I stumbled upon this youtube video which takes a retrocomputing look at a product I was involved in creating in 1999. It was fascinating looking back at it, and I realized I've never written down how this boxed set of Debian "slink and a half", an unofficial Debian release, came to be. As best I can remember, the CD in that box was Debian 2.1 ("slink") with the linux kernel updated from 2.0 to 2.2. Specifically, it used VA Linux Systems's patched version of the kernel, which supported their hardware better, but also 2.2 generally supported a lot of hardware much better than 2.0. There were some other small modifications that got rolled back into Debian 2.2. I mostly remember updating the installer to support that kernel, and building CD images. Probably over the course of a few weeks. This was the first time I worked on the (old) Debian installer, and the first time I built a Debian CD. I also edited the O'Rielly book that was included in the boxed set. It was wild when pallet loads of these boxed sets showed up. I think they sold for $19.95 at Fry's, although VA Linux Systems also gave lots of them away at conferences.
Watching the video of the installation, I was struck again and again by pain points, which the video does a good job of highlighting. It was a guided tour of everything about Debian that I wanted to fix in 1999. At each pain point I remembered how we fixed it, often years later, after considerable effort. I remembered how the old installer (the boot-floppies) was mostly moribund with only a couple people able and willing to work on it at all. (The video is right to compare its partitioning with old Linux installers from the early 90's because it was a relic from that era!) I remembered designing a new Debian installer that was more modular so more people could get invested in maintaining smaller pieces of it. It was yes, a second system, and developed too slowly, but was intended to withstand the test of time. It mostly has, since it's used to this day. I remembered how partitioning got automated in new Debian installer, by a new "partman" program being contributed by someone I'd never heard of before, obsoleting some previous attempts we'd made (yay modularity). I remembered how I started the os-prober project, which lets the Debian installer add other OS's that are co-installed on the machine to the boot menu. And how that got picked up even outside of Debian, by eg Red Hat. I remembered working on tasksel soon after that project was started, and all the difficult decisions about what tasks to offer and what software it should install. I remembered how the horrible stream of questions from package after package was to deal with, and how I implemented debconf, which tidied that up, integrated it into the installer's UI, made it automatable, and let novices avoid seeing configuration that was intended for experts. And I remembered writing dpkg-reconfigure, so that those configuration choices could be revisited later. It's quite possible I would not have done most of that if VA Linux Systems had not tasked me with making this CD. The thing about releasing something imperfect into the world is you start to feel a responsibility to improve it...
The main critique in the video specific to this boxed set and not to any other Debian release of this era is that this was a single CD, while 2 CDs were needed for all of Debian at the time. And many people had only dialup internet, so would be stuck very slowly downloading any other software they needed. And likewise those free forever upgrades the box promised. Oh the irony: After starting many of those projects, I left VA Linux Systems and the lands of fast internet, and spent 4 years on dialup. Most of that stuff was developed on dialup, though I did have about a year with better internet at the end to put the finishing touches in the new installer that shipped in Debian 3.1. Yes, the dialup apt-gets were excruciatingly slow. But the upgrades were in fact, free forever.
PS: The video's description includes "it would take many years of effort (primarily from Ubuntu) that would help smooth out many of the rough end of this product". All these years later, I do continue to enjoy people involved in Ubuntu downplaying the extent that it was a reskin of my Debian installer shipped on a CD a few months before Debian could get around to shipping it. Like they say, history doesn't repeat, but it does rhyme. PPS: While researching this blog post, I found an even more obscure, and broken, Debian CD was produced by VA Linux in November 1999. Distributed for free at Comdex by the thousands, this CD lacked the Packages file that is necessary for apt-get to use it. I don't know if any versions of that CD still exist. If you find one, email me and I'll send some instructions I wrote up in 1999 to work around the problem.

Joey Hess: announcing zephyr-copilot

I recently learned about the Zephyr Project which is a rather neat embedded OS for devices too small to run Linux. This led me to wondering if I could adapt arduino-copilot to target Zephyr, and so be able to program any of the 350+ boards it supports using Haskell. At the same time I had an opportunity to give a talk at the Houston Functional Programmers group. On February 1st I decided to give that talk, about arduino-copilot. That left 2 weeks to buy some hardware supported by Zephyr and port arduino-copilot to it. The result is zephyr-copilot, and I was able to demo it during my talk. This example can be used with any of 293 different boards, and will blink an on-board LED:

Doing much more than that needs a board specific module to set up GPIO pins etc. So far I only have written those for a couple of boards I have, but they are fairly easy to write. I'd be happy to help anyone who wants to contribute one. Due to the time constraints I have not implemented serial port support, or PWM or ADC yet, although all should be fairly easy. Zephyr also has no end of other capabilities, from networking to file systems to sensors, that could perhaps be supported in zephyr-copilot. My talk has now been published on youtube. Happy solstice, and happy Volunteer Responsibility Amnesty Day! After my inventory of my code today, I have decided it's time to pass on moreutils to someone new. This project remains interesting to people, including me. People still send patches, which are easy to deal with. Taking up basic maintenance of this package will be easy for you, if you feel like stepping forward. People still contribute ideas and code for new tools to add to moreutils. But I have not added any new tools to it since 2016. There is a big collections of ideas that I have done nothing with. The problem, I realized, is that "general-purpose new unix tool" is rather open-ended, and kind of problimatic. Picking new tools to add is an editorial process, or it becomes a mishmash of too many tools that are perhaps not general purpose. I am not a great editor, and so I tightened my requirements for "general-purpose" and "new" so far that I stopped adding anything. If you have ideas to solve that, or fearless good taste in curating a collection, this project is for you. The other reason it's less appealing to me is that unix tools as a whole are less appealing to me now. Now, as a functional programmer, I can get excited about actual general-purpose functional tools. And these are well curated and collected and can be shown to fit because the math says they do. Even a tiny Haskell function like this is really very interesting in how something so maximally trivial is actually usable in so many contexts.

Anyway, I am not dropping maintenance of moreutils unless and until someone steps up to take it on. As I said, it's easy. But I am laying down the burden of editorial responsibility and won't be thinking about adding new tools to it.

Joey Hess: a bitter pill for Microsoft Copilot

These blackberries are so sweet and just out there in the commons, free for the taking. While picking a gallon this morning, I was thinking about how neat it is that Haskell is not one programming language, but a vast number of related languages. A lot of smart people have, just for fun, thought of ways to write Haskell programs that do different things depending on the extensions that are enabled. (See: Wait, what language is this?) I've long wished for an AI to put me out of work programming. Or better, that I could collaborate with. Haskell's type checker is the closest I've seen to that but it doesn't understand what I want. I always imagined I'd support citizenship a full, general AI capable of that. I did not imagine that the first real attempt would be the product of a rent optimisation corporate AI, that throws all our hard work in a hopper, and deploys enough lawyers to muddy the question of whether that violates our copyrights. Perhaps it's time to think about non-copyright mitigations. Here is an easy way, for Haskell developers. Pick an extension and add code that loops when it's not enabled. Or when it is enabled. Or when the wrong combination of extensions are enabled.

I will deploy this mitigation in my code where I consider it appropriate. I will not be making my code do anything worse than looping, but of course this method could be used to make Microsoft Copilot generate code that is as problimatic as necessary.

Sean Whitton: Live replacement of provider cloud images with upstream Debian

Tonight I m provisioning a new virtual machine at Hetzner and I wanted to share how Consfigurator is helping with that. Hetzner have a Debian buster image you can start with, as you d expect, but it comes with things like cloud-init, preconfiguration to use Hetzner s apt mirror which doesn t serve source packages(!), and perhaps other things I haven t discovered. It s a fine place to begin, but I want all the configuration for this server to be explicit in my Consfigurator consfig, so it is good to start with pristine upstream Debian. I could boot one of Hetzner s installation ISOs but that s slow and manual. Consfigurator can replace the OS in the VM s root filesystem and reboot for me, and we re ready to go. Here s the configuration:

Here the :HOP parameter specifies the IP address of the new machine, as DNS hasn t been updated yet. Consfigurator installs SBCL and debootstrap(8), prepares a minimal system, replaces the contents of /, gets to work applying the other properties, and then reboots. This gets us a properly populated fstab:

(slightly doctored for more readable alignment) There s ordering logic so that the swapfile will end up after whatever filesystem contains it; a UUID is used for ext4 filesystems, but for fat32 filesystems, to be safe, a PARTUUID is used. The application of (INSTALLER:BOOTLOADERS-INSTALLED) handles calling both update-grub(8) and grub-install(8), relying on the metadata specified about /dev/sda. Next time we execute Consfigurator against the machine, it ll ignore all the property applications attached to the application of (INSTALLER:CLEANLY-INSTALLED-ONCE) with ON-CHANGE, and just apply everything following that block. There are a few things I don t have good solutions for. When you boot Hetzner s image the primary network interface is eth0, but then for a freshly debootstrapped Debian you get enp1s0, and I haven t got a good way of knowing what it ll be (if you know it ll have the same name, you can use (NETWORK:PRESERVE-STATIC-ONCE) to create a file in /etc/network/interfaces.d based on the current default route and corresponding interface). Another tricky thing is SSH host keys. It s easy to use Consfigurator to add host keys to your laptop s ~/.ssh/known_hosts, but in this case the host key changes back and forth from whatever the Hetzner image has and the newly generated key you get afterwards. One option might be to copy the old host keys out of /old-os before it gets deleted, like how /etc/resolv.conf is copied. This work is based on Propellor s equivalent functionality. I think my approach to handling /etc/fstab and bootloader installation is an improvement on what Joey does.

Joey Hess: typed pipes in every shell

Powershell and nushell take unix piping beyond raw streams of text to structured or typed data. Is it possible to keep a traditional shell like bash and still get typed pipes? I think it is possible, and I'm now surprised noone seems to have done it yet. This is a fairly detailed design for how to do it. I've not implemented it yet. RFC. Let's start with a command called typed. You can use it in a pipeline like this:
typed foo   typed bar   typed baz
What typed does is discover the types of the commands to its left and its right, while communicating the type of the command it runs back to them. Then it checks if the types match, and runs the command, communicating the type information to it. Pipes are unidirectional, so it may seem hard to discover the type to the right, but I'll explain how it can be done in a minute. Now suppose that foo generates json, and bar filters structured data of a variety of types, and baz consumes csv and pretty-prints a table. Then bar will be informed that its input is supposed to be json, and that its output should be csv. If bar didn't support json, typed foo and typed bar would both fail with a type error. Writing "typed" in front of everything is annoying. But it can be made a shell alias like "t". It also possible to wrap programs using typed:

Or program could import a library that uses typed, so it natively supports being used in typed pipelines. I'll explain one way to make such a library later on, once some more details are clear. Which gets us back to a nice simple pipeline, now automatically typed.

If one of the commands is not actually typed, the other ones in the pipe will treat it as having a raw stream of text as input or output. Which will sometimes result in a type error (yay, I love type errors!), but in other cases can do something useful.

So how does typed discover the types of the commands to the left and right? That's the hard part. It has to start by finding the pids to its left and right. There is no really good way to do that, but on Linux, it can be done: Look at what /proc/self/fd/0 and /proc/self/fd/1 link to, which contains the unique identifiers of the pipes. Then look at other processes' fd/0 and fd/1 to find matching pipe identifiers. (It's also possible to do this on OSX, I believe. I don't know about BSDs.) Searching through all processes would be a bit expensive (around 15 ms with an average number of processes), but there's a nice optimisation: The shell will have started the processes close together in time, so the pids are probably nearby. So look at the previous pid, and the next pid, and fan outward. Also, check isatty to detect the beginning and end of the pipeline and avoid scanning all the processes in those cases. To indicate the type of the command it will run, typed simply opens a file with an extension of ".typed". The file can be located anywhere, and can be an already existing file, or can be created as needed (eg in /run). Once it discovers the pid at the other end of a pipe, typed first looks at /proc/$pid/cmdline to see if it's also running typed. If it is, it looks at its open file handles to find the first ".typed" file. It may need to wait for the file handle to get opened, which is why it needs to verify the pid is running typed. There also needs to be a way for typed to learn the type of the command it will run. Reading /usr/share/typed/$command.typed is one way. Or it can be specified at the command line, which is useful for wrapper scripts:

And typed communicates the type information to the command that it runs. This way a command like bar can know what format its input should be in, and what format to use as output. This might be done with environment variables, eg INPUT_TYPE=JSON and OUTPUT_TYPE=CSV I think that's everything typed needs, except for the syntax of types and how the type checking works. Which I should probably not try to think up off the cuff. I used Haskell ADT syntax in the example above, but don't think that's necessarily the right choice. Finally, here's how to make a library that lets a program natively support being used in a typed pipeline. It's a bit tricky, because it has to run typed, because typed checks /proc/$pid/cmdline as detailed above. So, check an environment variable. When not set yet, set it, and exec typed, passing it the path to the program, which it will re-exec. This should be done before program does anything else.

Joey Hess: the end of the olduse.net exhibit

Ten years ago I began the olduse.net exhibit, spooling out Usenet history in real time with a 30 year delay. My archive has reached its end, and ten years is more than long enough to keep running something you cobbled together overnight way back when. So, this is the end for olduse.net. The site will continue running for another week or so, to give you time to read the last posts. Find the very last one, if you can! The source code used to run it, and the content of the website have themselves been archived up for posterity at The Internet Archive. Sometime in 2022, a spammer will purchase the domain, but not find it to be of much value. The Utzoo archives that underlay it have currently sadly been censored off the Internet by someone. This will be unsuccessful; by now they have spread and many copies will live on.

Antoine Beaupr : Leaving Freenode

The freenode IRC network has been hijacked. TL;DR: move to libera.chat or OFTC.net, as did countless free software projects including Gentoo, CentOS, KDE, Wikipedia, FOSDEM, and more. Debian and the Tor project were already on OFTC and are not affected by this.

What is freenode and why should I care? freenode is the largest remaining IRC network. Before this incident, it had close to 80,000 users, which is small in terms of modern internet history -- even small social networks are larger by multiple orders of magnitude -- but is large in IRC history. The IRC network is also extensively used by the free software community, being the default IRC network on many programs, and used by hundreds if not thousands of free software projects. I have been using freenode since at least 2006. This matters if you care about IRC, the internet, open protocols, decentralisation, and, to a certain extent, federation as well. It also touches on who has the right on network resources: the people who "own" it (through money) or the people who make it work (through their labor). I am biased towards open protocols, the internet, federation, and worker power, and this might taint this analysis.

What happened? It's a long story, but basically:
  1. back in 2017, the former head of staff sold the freenode.net domain (and its related company) to Andrew Lee, "American entrepreneur, software developer and writer", and, rather weirdly, supposedly "crown prince of Korea" although that part is kind of complex (see House of Yi, Yi Won, and Yi Seok). It should be noted the Korean Empire hasn't existed for over a century at this point (even though its flag, also weirdly, remains)
  2. back then, this was only known to the public as this strange PIA and freenode joining forces gimmick. it was suspicious at first, but since the network kept running, no one paid much attention to it. opers of the network were similarly reassured that Lee would have no say in the management of the network
  3. this all changed recently when Lee asserted ownership of the freenode.net domain and started meddling in the operations of the network, according to this summary. this part is disputed, but it is corroborated by almost a dozen former staff which collectively resigned from the network in protest, after legal threats, when it was obvious freenode was lost.
  4. the departing freenode staff founded a new network, irc.libera.chat, based on the new ircd they were working on with OFTC, solanum
  5. meanwhile, bot armies started attacking all IRC networks: both libera and freenode, but also OFTC and unrelated networks like a small one I help operate. those attacks have mostly stopped as of this writing (2021-05-24 17:30UTC)
  6. on freenode, however, things are going for the worse: Lee has been accused of taking over a channel, in a grotesque abuse of power; then changing freenode policy to not only justify the abuse, but also remove rules against hateful speech, effectively allowing nazis on the network (update: the change was reverted, but not by Lee)
Update: even though the policy change was reverted, the actual conversations allowed on freenode have already degenerated into toxic garbage. There are also massive channel takeovers (presumably over 700), mostly on channels that were redirecting to libera, but also channels that were still live. Channels that were taken over include #fosdem, #wikipedia, #haskell... Instead of working on the network, the new "so-called freenode" staff is spending effort writing bots and patches to basically automate taking over channels. I run an IRC network and this bot is obviously not standard "services" stuff... This is just grotesque. At this point I agree with this HN comment:
We should stop implicitly legitimizing Andrew Lee's power grab by referring to his dominion as "Freenode". Freenode is a quarter-century-old community that has changed its name to libera.chat; the thing being referred to here as "Freenode" is something else that has illegitimately acquired control of Freenode's old servers and user database, causing enormous inconvenience to the real Freenode.
I don't agree with the suggested name there, let's instead call it "so called freenode" as suggested later in the thread.

What now? I recommend people and organisations move away from freenode as soon as possible. This is a major change: documentation needs to be fixed, and the migration needs to be coordinated. But I do not believe we can trust the new freenode "owners" to operate the network reliably and in good faith. It's also important to use the current momentum to build a critical mass elsewhere so that people don't end up on freenode again by default and find an even more toxic community than your typical run-of-the-mill free software project (which is already not a high bar to meet). Update: people are moving to libera in droves. It's now reaching 18,000 users, which is bigger than OFTC and getting close to the largest, traditionnal, IRC networks (EFnet, Undernet, IRCnet are in the 10-20k users range). so-called freenode is still larger, currently clocking 68,000 users, but that's a huge drop from the previous count which was 78,000 before the exodus began. We're even starting to see the effects of the migration on netsplit.de. Update 2: the isfreenodedeadyet.com site is updated more frequently than netsplit and shows tons more information. It shows 25k online users for libera and 61k for so-called freenode (down from ~78k), and the trend doesn't seem to be stopping for so-called freenode. There's also a list of 400+ channels that have moved out. Keep in mind that such migrations take effect over long periods of time.

Where do I move to? The first thing you should do is to figure out which tool to use for interactive user support. There are multiple alternatives, of course -- this is the internet after all -- but here is a short list of suggestions, in preferred priority order:
  1. irc.libera.chat
  2. irc.OFTC.net
  3. Matrix.org, which bridges with OFTC and (hopefully soon) with libera as well, modern IRC alternative
  4. XMPP/Jabber also still exists, if you're into that kind of stuff, but I don't think the "chat room" story is great there, at least not as good as Matrix
Basically, the decision tree is this:
  • if you want to stay on IRC:
    • if you are already on many OFTC channels and few freenode channels: move to OFTC
    • if you are more inclined to support the previous freenode staff: move to libera
    • if you care about matrix users (in the short term): move to OFTC
  • if you are ready to leave IRC:
    • if you want the latest and greatest: move to Matrix
    • if you like XML and already use XMPP: move to XMPP
Frankly, at this point, everyone should seriously consider moving to Matrix. The user story is great, the web is a first class user, it supports E2EE (although XMPP as well), and has a lot of momentum behind it. It even bridges with IRC well (which is not the case for XMPP) so if you're worried about problems like this happening again. (Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if similar drama happens on OFTC or libera in the future. The history of IRC is full of such epic controversies, takeovers, sabotage, attacks, technical flamewars, and other silly things. I am not sure, but I suspect a federated model like Matrix might be more resilient to conflicts like this one.) Changing protocols might mean losing a bunch of users however: not everyone is ready to move to Matrix, for example. Graybeards like me have been using irssi for years, if not decades, and would take quite a bit of convincing to move elsewhere. I have mostly kept my channels on IRC, and moved either to OFTC or libera. In retrospect, I think I might have moved everything to OFTC if I would have thought about it more, because almost all of my channels are there. But I kind of expect a lot of the freenode community to move to libera, so I am keeping a socket open there anyways.

How do I move? The first thing you should do is to update documentation, websites, and source code to stop pointing at freenode altogether. This is what I did for feed2exec, for example. You need to let people know in the current channel as well, and possibly shutdown the channel on freenode. Since my channels are either small or empty, I took the radical approach of:
  • redirecting the channel to ##unavailable which is historically the way we show channels have moved to another network
  • make the channel invite-only (which effectively enforces the redirection)
  • kicking everyone out of the channel
  • kickban people who rejoin
  • set the topic to announce the change
In IRC speak, the following commands should do all this:

/msg ChanServ set #anarcat restricted on

If the channel is not registered, the following might work

Then you can leave freenode altogether:

Keep in mind that some people have been unable to setup such redirections, because the new freenode staff have taken over their channel, in which case you're out of luck... Some people have expressed concern about their private data hosted at freenode as well. If you care about this, you can always talk to NickServ and DROP your nick. Be warned, however, that this assumes good faith of the network operators, which, at this point, is kind of futile. I would assume any data you have registered on there (typically: your NickServ password and email address) to be compromised and leaked. If your password is used elsewhere (tsk, tsk), change it everywhere. Update: there's also another procedure, similar to the above, but with a different approach. Keep in mind that so-called freenode staff are actively hijacking channels for the mere act of mentioning libera in the channel topic, so thread carefully there.

Last words This is a sad time for IRC in general, and freenode in particular. It's a real shame that the previous freenode staff have been kicked out, and it's especially horrible that if the new policies of the network are basically making the network open to nazis. I wish things would have gone out differently: now we have yet another fork in the IRC history. While it's not the first time freenode changes name (it was called OPN before), now the old freenode is still around and this will bring much confusion to the world, especially since the new freenode staff is still claiming to support FOSS. I understand there are many sides to this story, and some people were deeply hurt by all this. But for me, it's completely unacceptable to keep pushing your staff so hard that they basically all (except one?) resign in protest. For me, that's leadership failure at the utmost, and a complete disgrace. And of course, I can't in good conscience support or join a network that allows hate speech. Regardless of the fate of whatever we'll call what's left of freenode, maybe it's time for this old IRC thing to die already. It's still a sad day in internet history, but then again, maybe IRC will never die...

Wow, what a mess! Let's see if I can make sense of this:

Attic Those are articles that I thought about, then finally rejected, either because it didn't seem worth it, or my editors rejected it, or I just moved on:
  • novena: the project is ooold now, didn't seem to fit a LWN article. it was basically "how can i build my novena now" and "you guys rock!" it seems like the MNT Reform is the brain child of the Novena now, and I dare say it's even cooler!
  • secureboot: my LWN editors were critical of my approach, and probably rightly so - it's a really complex subject and I was probably out of my depth... it's also out of date now, we did manage secureboot in Debian
  • wireguard: LWN ended up writing extensive coverage, and I was biased against Donenfeld because of conflicts in a previous project

Backlog Those were articles I was planning to write about next.
  • dat: I already had written Sharing and archiving data sets with Dat, but it seems I had more to say... mostly performance issues, beaker, no streaming, limited adoption... to be investigated, I guess?
  • packet: a primer on data communications over ham radio, and the cool new tech that has emerged in the free software world. those are mainly notes about Pat, Direwolf, APRS and so on... just never got around to making sense of it or really using the tech...
  • performance-tweaks: "optimizing websites at the age of http2", the unwritten story of the optimization of this website with HTTP/2 and friends
  • serverless: god. one of the leftover topics at Kubecon, my notes on this were thin, and the actual subject, possibly even thinner... the only lie worse than the cloud is that there's no server at all! concretely, that's a pile of notes about Kubecon which I wanted to sort through. Probably belongs in the attic now.

Fin Those are finished articles, they were published on my website and LWN, but the branches were kept because previous drafts had private notes that should not be published.

Ideas A lot of those branches were actually just an empty commit, with the commitlog being the "pitch", more or less. I'd send that list to my editors, sometimes with a few more links (basically the above), and they would nudge me one way or the other. Sometimes they would actively discourage me to write about something, and I would do it anyways, send them a draft, and they would patiently make me rewrite it until it was a decent article. This was especially hard with the terminal emulator series, which took forever to write and even got my editors upset when they realized I had never installed Fedora (I ended up installing it, and I was proven wrong!)

Stalled Oh, and then there's those: those are either "ideas" or "backlog" that got so far behind that I just moved them out of the way because I was tired of seeing them in my list.
  • stalled/bench-bench-bench benchmarking http benchmarking tools, a horrible mess of links, copy-paste from terminals, and ideas about benchmarking... some of this trickled out into this benchmarking guide at Tor, but not much more than the list of tools
  • stalled/debian-survey-democracy: "free software surveys and Debian democracy, volunteer vs paid work"... A long standing concern of mine is that all Debian work is supposed to be volunteer, and paying explicitly for work inside Debian has traditionally been frowned upon, even leading to serious drama and dissent (remember Dunc-Tank)? back when I was writing for LWN, I was also doing paid work for Debian LTS. I also learned that a lot (most?) Debian Developers were actually being paid by their job to work on Debian. So I was confused by this apparent contradiction, especially given how the LTS project has been mostly accepted, while Dunc-Tank was not... See also this talk at Debconf 16. I had hopes that this study would show the "hunch" people have offered (that most DDs are paid to work on Debian) but it seems to show the reverse (only 36% of DDs, and 18% of all respondents paid). So I am still confused and worried about the sustainability of Debian.

What do you think? So that's all I got. As people might have noticed here, I have much less time to write these days, but if there's any subject in there I should pick, what is the one that you would find most interesting? Oh! and I should mention that you can write to LWN! If you think people should know more about some Linux thing, you can get paid to write for it! Pitch it to the editors, they won't bite. The worst that can happen is that they say "yes" and there goes two years of your life learning to write. Because no, you don't know how to write, no one does. You need an editor to write. That's why this article looks like crap and has a smiley. :)

Sean Whitton: consfigurator-live-build

One of my goals for Consfigurator is to make it capable of installing Debian to my laptop, so that I can stop booting to GRML and manually partitioning and debootstrapping a basic system, only to then turn to configuration management to set everything else up. My configuration management should be able to handle the partitioning and debootstrapping, too. The first stage was to make Consfigurator capable of debootstrapping a basic system, chrooting into it, and applying other arbitrary configuration, such as installing packages. That s been in place for some weeks now. It s sophisticated enough to avoid starting up newly installed services, but I still need to add some bind mounting. Another significant piece is teaching Consfigurator how to partition block devices. That s quite tricky to do in a sufficiently general way I want to cleanly support various combinations of LUKS, LVM and regular partitions, including populating /etc/crypttab and /etc/fstab. I have some ideas about how to do it, but it ll probably take a few tries to get the abstractions right. Let s imagine that code is all in place, such that Consfigurator can be pointed at a block device and it will install a bootable Debian system to it. Then to install Debian to my laptop I d just need to take my laptop s disk drive out and plug it into another system, and run Consfigurator on that system, as root, pointed at the block device representing my laptop s disk drive. For virtual machines, it would be easy to write code which loop-mounts an empty disk image, and then Consfigurator could be pointed at the loop-mounted block device, thereby making the disk image file bootable. This is adequate for virtual machines, or small single-board computers with tiny storage devices (not that I actually use any of those, but I want Consfigurator to be able to make disk images for them!). But it s not much good for my laptop. I casually referred to taking out my laptop s disk drive and connecting it to another computer, but this would void my laptop s warranty. And Consfigurator would not be able to update my laptop s NVRAM, as is needed on UEFI systems. What s wanted here is a live system which can run Consfigurator directly on the laptop, pointed at the block device representing its physical disk drive. Ideally this live system comes with a chroot with the root filesystem for the new Debian install already built, so that network access is not required, and all Consfigurator has to do is partition the drive and copy in the contents of the chroot. The live system could be set up to automatically start doing that upon boot, but another option is to just make Consfigurator itself available to be used interactively. The user boots the live system, starts up Emacs, starts up Lisp, and executes a Consfigurator deployment, supplying the block device representing the laptop s disk drive as an argument to the deployment. Consfigurator goes off and partitions that drive, copies in the contents of the chroot, and executes grub-install to make the laptop bootable. This is also much easier to debug than a live system which tries to start partitioning upon boot. It would look something like this:

Now, building live systems is a fair bit more involved than installing Debian to a disk drive and making it bootable, it turns out. While I want Consfigurator to be able to completely replace the Debian Installer, I decided that it is not worth trying to reimplement the relevant parts of the Debian Live tool suite, because I do not need to make arbitrary customisations to any live systems. I just need to have some packages installed and some files in place. Nevertheless, it is worth teaching Consfigurator how to invoke Debian Live, so that the customisation of the chroot which isn t just a matter of passing options to lb_config(1) can be done with Consfigurator. This is what I ve ended up with in Consfigurator s source code:

Here, %lbconfig is a property running lb_config(1), %lbbootstrap one which runs lb_bootstrap(1), etc. Those properties all just change directory to the right place and run the command, essentially, with a little extra code to handle failed debootstraps and the like. The ON-CHANGE and ESEQPROPS combinators work together to sequence the interaction of the Debian Live suite and Consfigurator. This way, we only rebuild the chroot if the configuration changed, and we only rebuild the image if the chroot changed. Now over in my personal consfig:

The first argument to LIVE-BUILD:IMAGE-BUILT. is additional arguments to lb_config(1). The third argument onwards are the properties for the live system. The cool thing is GIT:SNAPSHOT-EXTRACTED the calls to this ensure that a copy of my Emacs configuration and my consfig end up in the live image, ready to be used interactively to install Debian, as described above. I ll need to add something like (chroot:host-chroot-bootstrapped melete.silentflame.com "/srv/chroot/melete") too. As with everything Consfigurator-related, Joey Hess s Propellor is the giant upon whose shoulders I m standing.
