Bits from Debian: What does it mean that ZFS is included in Debian?

Petter Reinholdtsen recently blogged about ZFS availability in Debian. Many people have worked hard on getting ZFS support available in Debian and we would like to thank everyone involved in getting to this point and explain what ZFS in Debian means. The landing of ZFS in the Debian archive was blocked for years due to licensing problems. Finally, the inclusion of ZFS was announced slightly more than a year ago, on April 2015 by the DPL at the time, Lucas Nussbaum who wrote "We received legal advice from Software Freedom Law Center about the inclusion of libdvdcss and ZFS in Debian, which should unblock the situation in both cases and enable us to ship them in Debian soon.". In January this year, the following DPL, Neil McGovern blogged with a lot of more details about the legal situation behind this and summarized it as "TLDR: It s going in contrib, as a source only dkms module." ZFS is not available exactly in Debian, since Debian is only what's included in the "main" section archive. What people really meant here is that ZFS code is now in included in "contrib" and it's available for users using DKMS. Many people also mixed this with Ubuntu now including ZFS. However, Debian and Ubuntu are not doing the same, Ubuntu is shipping directly pre-built kernel modules, something that is considered to be a GPL violation. As the Software Freedom Conservancy wrote "while licensed under an acceptable license for Debian's Free Software Guidelines, also has a default use that can cause licensing problems for downstream Debian users".

Lunar: Reproducible builds: week 14 in Stretch cycle

What happened in the reproducible builds effort this week: Toolchain fixes akira submitted a patch to make cdbs export SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH. She uploded a package with the enhancement to the experimental reproducible repository. Packages fixed The following 15 packages became reproducible due to changes in their build dependencies: dracut, editorconfig-core, elasticsearch, fish, libftdi1, liblouisxml, mk-configure, nanoc, octave-bim, octave-data-smoothing, octave-financial, octave-ga, octave-missing-functions, octave-secs1d, octave-splines, valgrind. The following packages became reproducible after getting fixed: Some uploads fixed some reproducibility issues but not all of them: In contrib, Dmitry Smirnov improved libdvd-pkg with 1.3.99-1-1. Patches submitted which have not made their way to the archive yet: reproducible.debian.net Four armhf build hosts were provided by Vagrant Cascadian and have been configured to be used by jenkins.debian.net. Work on including armhf builds in the reproducible.debian.net webpages has begun. So far the repository comparison page just shows us which armhf binary packages are currently missing in our repo. (h01ger) The scheduler has been changed to re-schedule more packages from stretch than sid, as the gcc5 transition has started This mostly affects build log age. (h01ger) A new depwait status has been introduced for packages which can't be built because of missing build dependencies. (Mattia Rizzolo) debbindiff development Finally, on August 31st, Lunar released debbindiff 27 containing a complete overhaul of the code for the comparison stage. The new architecture is more versatile and extensible while minimizing code duplication. libarchive is now used to handle cpio archives and iso9660 images through the newly packaged python-libarchive-c. This should also help support a couple other archive formats in the future. Symlinks and devices are now properly compared. Text files are compared as Unicode after being decoded, and encoding differences are reported. Support for Sqlite3 and Mono/.NET executables has been added. Thanks to Valentin Lorentz, the test suite should now run on more systems. A small defiency in unquashfs has been identified in the process. A long standing optimization is now performed on Debian package: based on the content of the md5sums control file, we skip comparing files with matching hashes. This makes debbindiff usable on packages with many files. Fuzzy-matching is now performed for files in the same container (like a tarball) to handle renames. Also, for Debian .changes, listed files are now compared without looking the embedded version number. This makes debbindiff a lot more useful when comparing different versions of the same package. Based on the rearchitecturing work has been done to allow parallel processing. The branch now seems to work most of the time. More test needs to be done before it can be merged. The current fuzzy-matching algorithm, ssdeep, has showed disappointing results. One important use case is being able to properly compare debug symbols. Their path is made using the Build ID. As this identifier is made with a checksum of the binary content, finding things like CPP macros is much easier when a diff of the debug symbols is available. Good news is that TLSH, another fuzzy-matching algorithm, has been tested with much better results. A package is waiting in NEW and the code is ready for it to become available. A follow-up release 28 was made on August 2nd fixing content label used for gzip2, bzip2 and xz files and an error on text files only differing in their encoding. It also contains a small code improvement on how comments on Difference object are handled. This is the last release name debbindiff. A new name has been chosen to better reflect that it is not a Debian specific tool. Stay tuned! Documentation update Valentin Lorentz updated the patch submission template to suggest to write the kind of issue in the bug subject. Small progress have been made on the Reproducible Builds HOWTO while preparing the related CCCamp15 talk. Package reviews 235 obsolete reviews have been removed, 47 added and 113 updated this week. 42 reports for packages failing to build from source have been made by Chris West (Faux). New issue added this week: haskell_devscripts_locale_substvars. Misc. Valentin Lorentz wrote a script to report packages tested as unreproducible installed on a system. We encourage everyone to run it on their systems and give feedback!

Olivier Berger: Configuring the start of multiple docker container with Vagrant in a portable manner

I ve mentioned earlier the work that our students did on migrating part of the elements of the Database MOOC lab VM to docker. While docker seems quite cool, let s face it, participants to the MOOCs aren t all using Linux where docker can be available directly. Hence the need to use boot2docker, for instance on Windows. Then we re back quite close to the architecture of the Vagrang VM, which relies too on a VirtualBox VM to run a Linux machine (boot2docker does exactly that with a minimal Linux which runs docker). If VirtualBox is to be kept around, then why not stick to Vagrant also, as it offers a docker provider. This docker provider for Vagrant helps configure basic parameters of docker containers in a Vagrantfile, and basically uses the vagrant up command instead of using docker build + docker run. If on Linux, it only triggers docker, and if not, then it ll start boot2docker (or any other Linux box) in between. This somehow offers a unified invocation command, which renders a bit more portable the documentation. Now, there are some tricks when using this docker provider, in particular for debugging what s happening inside the VM. One nice feature is that you can debug on Linux what is to be executed on Windows, by explicitely requiring the start of the intermediary boot2docker VM even if it s not really needed. By using a custom secondary Vagrantfile for that VM, it is possible to tune some parameters of that VM (like its graphic memory to allow to start it with a GUI allowing to connect another alternative is to ssh -p 2222 docker@localhost once you know that its password is tcuser ). I ve committed an example of such a setup in the moocbdvm project s Git, which duplicates the docker provisioning files that our students had already published in the dedicated GitHub repo. Here s an interesting reference post about Vagrant + docker and multiple containers, btw.

Olivier Berger: Building a lab VM based on Debian for a MOOC, using Vagrant + VirtualBox

We ve been busy setting up a Virtual Machine (VM) image to be used by participants of a MOOC that s opening in early september on Relational Databases at Telecom SudParis. We ve chosen to use Vagrant and VirtualBox which are used to build, distribute and run the box, providing scriptability (reproducibility) and making it portable on most operating systems. The VM itself contains a Debian (jessie) minimal system which runs (in the background) PostgreSQL, Apache + mod_php, phpPgAdmin, and a few applications of our own to play with example databases already populated in PostgreSQL.
As the MOOC s language will be french, we expect the box to be used mostly on machines with azerty keyboards. This and other context elements led us to add some customizations (locale, APT mirror) in provisioning scripts run during the box creation. At the moment, we generate 2 variants of the box, one for 32 bits kernel (i686) and one for 64 bits kernel (amd64) which (once compressed) represent betw. 300 and 350 Mb. The resulting boxes are uploaded to a self-hosting site, and distributed through vagrantcloud. Once the VM are created in VirtualBox, the typical VMDK drives file is around 1.3Gb. We use our own Debian base boxes containing a minimal Debian jessie/testing, instead of relying on someone else s, and recreate them using (the development branch version of) bootsrap-vz. This ensure we can put more trust in the content as it s a native Debian package installation without MITM intervention. The VM are meant to be run headless for the moment, keeping their size to the minimum, even though we also provide a script to install and configure a desktop environment based on XFCE4. The applications are either used through vagrant ssh, for instance for SQL command-line in psql, or in the Web browser, for our own Web based SQL exerciser, or phpPgAdmin (see a demo screencast (in french, w/ english subtitles)), which can then be used even off-line by the participants, which also means this requires no servers availability for our IT staff.
The MOOC includes a section on PHP + SQL programming, whose exercises can be performed using a shared sub-folder of /vagrant/ which allows editing on the host with the favourite native editor/IDE, while running PHP inside the VM s Apache + mod_php. The sources of our environment are available as free software, if you re interested to replicate a similar environment for another project. As we re still polishing the environment before the MOOC opening (on september 10th), I m not mentioning the box URLs but they shouldn t be too hard to find if you re investigating (refering to the fusionforge project s web site). We don t know yet how suitable this environment will be for learning SQL and database design and programming, and if Vagrant will bring more difficulties than benefits. Still we hope that the participants will find this practical, allowing them to work on the lab / exercises whenever and wherever they chose, removing the pain of installing and configuring a RDBMS on their machines, or the need to be connected to a cloud or to our overloaded servers. Of course, one limitation will be the requirements on the host machines, that will need to be reasonably modern, in order to run a virtualized Linux system. Another is access to high bandwidth for downloading the boxes, but this is kind of a requirement already for downloading/watching the videos of the MOOC classes ;-) Big thanks go to our intern St phane Germain, who joined us this summer to work on this virtualized environment.

John Goerzen: Married!

One week before the wedding, to Laura: Mono won t just clear up right away. One week before the wedding, to me: That s going to need stitches. Yes, not long before the wedding, Laura had come down with mononucleosis and I had cut into my finger with a very sharp knife while cutting bread requiring a trip to the emergency room to get stitches. Two days before we got married, instead of moving furniture, I was getting stitches out of my finger. It wasn t the kind of week we had planned. But it was the happiest, most amazing occasion I could have ever imagined. As I wrote last month, I am richly blessed indeed. Our wedding was three days after Christmas. The church was still decorated for Christmas, with the tree in on corner, glittering stars suspended in mid-air on cables from the walls, wreaths and candles in the windows, and it was a joy-filled day. Before the ceremony, we took pictures the only part of the day Jacob and Oliver weren t thrilled with. Nevertheless, we got some fun ones. Laura and I seem to know quite a few pastors between us and not just because Laura is a pastor. My brother officiated with the wedding vows, his wife with scripture and a prayer of blessing, and the church s pastor gave the message. Laura and I wrote in our wedding program, Music has long been a thread running through both our lives. We have enjoyed singing together, playing piano and pennywhistle duets, attending concerts, and even exploring old hymnals. Music is also one of the best ways to have a conversation even a conversation with God. We wrote a page in the program about each of the hymns that were a part of the wedding, and why we picked them. The combined church choirs of my home church and Laura s church sang John Rutter s beautiful arrangement of For the Beauty of the Earth (click here to listen to a different choir). Hearing For the beauty of each hour , For the joy of human love , and Lord of all, to thee we raise this our joyful hymn of praise was perfect for the day. It was with such great happiness that we walked out of the sanctuary, a married couple, to the sound of the congregation singing Joy to the World! Jacob and Oliver were so very excited on our wedding day. They happily explored the church while waiting for things to happen. We had them help us light our unity candle, and they were pleased with that. Jacob loved his suit, which made him look just like me. And they were, of course, delighted with the cake and in the middle of it all. For our honeymoon, we managed to get two weeks of vacation, and spent about half of it at home. We had looked at various options for retreats in the country, but eventually concluded that our house is a retreat in the country, so might as well enjoy it at home. We also went to the Palo Duro Canyon area near Amarillo in the Texas panhandle, staying in a small B&B in Canyon, TX. Palo Duro is the second-largest canyon in North America, and quite colorful year-round. What a beautiful place to go for our honeymoon! By the time we got there, Laura was getting past mono, and we went for hikes in the canyon on two different days hiking a total of 10 miles, including a hike up the side of the canyon. After we got back home, on the last weekday of our honeymoon, we went back to the Flint Hills of Kansas, to some of the same places we had spent our third date. We climbed the windy staircase at the Chase County Courthouse, the oldest courthouse still in use in Kansas. And peered out its famous oval window. We found the last remnant of the old ghost town of Elk, ate at the same restaurant we had that day. It brought back wonderful memories, and it was a good day in itself. Because even though it was a gold, drizzly, overcast day in January, this time, we were married. And this year, Thanksgiving is all year.

John Goerzen: Amazement

One of the benefits of working from home is that I have a great view of Kansas from my desk. While I work, I have seen sunrises, snowfall, birds, rain, ice, and all sorts of wildlife. I heard this verse of Home on the Range the other day, which reminded me of this:
How often at night when the heavens are bright
With the light from the glittering stars
Have I stood here amazed and asked as I gazed
If their glory exceeds that of ours.
One time, I asked Jacob if I should wake him up at night to see the stars. He said an excited yes! So when it was dark outside, I woke him up, carried him outside, and held him while he looked up. He said a long, breathy Wooooow! Then he went back to bed, curled up with his butterfly, and fell asleep smiling. Every so often, we repeat this little routine. There are many opportunities in life to just stand somewhere and be amazed. You don t have to be in Kansas. Children know this. The rest of us just have to notice.

Andrew Pollock: [life] Zip lining

Ever since I saw some videos from a team offsite somewhere on the East Coast, I've wanted to go zip lining. I have vague memories of riding what we call in Australia a "flying fox" in Scouts as a kid, and this looked even more fun than that. I found the Mount Hermon Adventures Redwood Canopy Tours nearby in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and so I booked it for yesterday. Eric was the only one of my friends who ended up being able to join me. It was good fun. It took about 2 hours all up, but that included gearing up and getting the safety training. I think there were 7 lines in total, of varying lengths and speeds and heights. I rented a helmet with a GoPro to capture the experience for posterity, and I'm currently in the process of uploading the videos here.

Vincent Fourmond: Introducing dvdcopy, an error-resistant command-line DVD copier

My wife likes watching DVDs a lot, which is why she borrows many from the public library. The problem is that many of those were handled by people who have no clue whatsoever about the proper handling of DVDs, which means that they are in a state ranging from moderately scratched in the best cases to properly scarred in the worst ones... xine or VLC fail miserably to read such DVDs. What's worse is that failures happen right in the middle of DVDs, which is quite frustrating !That's why I've started quite some time ago to write a small C wrapper around libdvdread to first copy the DVD files onto the disk and then read them from there. It was also an easy solution to copy files to a driveless netbook to watch the DVD there. With time, this project evolved into a neat C++ command-line utility that's able to keep track of badly read sectors and come back to them later.Today is the 0.0 release of dvdcopy. You can get the tarball there. It follows the standard autoconf dance:
~ ./configure
~ make
~ make install
Using it is as simple as running:
~ dvdcopy /dev/dvd MyMovieDirectory
If everything went fine, you're set, and you can open the directory created with vlc or xine:
~ xine dvd:// pwd /MyMovieDirectory
(yes, xine needs the full path, I haven't checked with VLC, but from what I remember, you can open DVD directories directly from a menu). If you're not that lucky and dvdcopy found some bad sectors, try reading again using
~ dvdcopy --second-pass /dev/dvd MyMovieDirectory
I found that in many cases, one or two second passes get all the sectors back. While that wasn't really the intended purpose, the fact that most copy protection schemes (in addition to CSS) are implemented using bad sectors make dvdcopy quite resistant to them.I have no plan of making a Debian package for it at the time being, but if there is demand for that, I may reconsider. Enjoy !

Stefano Zacchiroli: bits from the DPL for October 2012

Freshly baked, bits from the DPL for October 2012.
Dear Project Members,
another month, another periodic report of DPL-ish activities, this time for October 2012. Highlights Debian on public clouds I've spent quite some time to improve Debian presence on the so called "public clouds". Following up to an inquiry of a fellow developer, I've reached out to Microsoft to investigate the possibility of having Debian as an option on Windows Azure. Around the same time, I've been approached by Amazon to have Debian as an option on the AWS marketplace. In both cases, we will need to overcome challenges of various kinds, at the technical (e.g. image preparation), bureaucratic (e.g. terms of the agreements we'll need to accept to be present), and political (e.g. chain of trust, platform freedom) levels. Up to now, discussions have been going on mostly in private, simply because they started as 1-to-1 inquiries and continued from there, but there is no good reason they should remain so. Hence, thanks to the listmasters and in particular Alexander Wirt, we have setup the new debian-cloud mailing list. If you are interested in these topics please join the list. For both Azure and AWS there is good progress on the technical part already; summaries will soon be posted on the list so that we are all on the same page. Similarly, I'll post there status reports about the bureaucratic requirements. And of course there is no reason to focus on specific clouds, if you'd like to support others and are willing to put some work to that end, please join the list and let us know. DPL helpers meeting I've already bothered you at least in my last platform and DebConf13 talk with observations about how non-scalable the DPL job is. After having collected applications of DPL helpers for a while, I've finally sat down and tried to put those applications into good use. The idea is simple: to the extend of possible, we should shift from a one-man-band job to a more "board-like" job, with people sharing an agenda, a list of outstanding tasks, and public communication. We have started slowly, setting up the #debian-dpl IRC channel and running periodic bi-weekly meetings there. You can find the meeting minutes and full logs at the usual place. We are still ramping up, so we don't have yet "fancy" stuff like a mailing list or an issue tracker entry, but they're in the working. Some of the outcome are starting to show, too (e.g. as part of recent discussions on 3rd party orphaning, or on our inbound trademark policy, or even in the forthcoming DMCA policy to make mentors.d.n an official project service). It's an experiment and a big challenge. I'm, for one thing, not yet convinced there are enough people interested in sharing the load of DPL duties (that look boring, for many tech geeks) in the long run. But I'm also convinced that the sustainability of the Debian organization model depends on this, so it's worth trying. If you're interested in the challenge and willing to volunteer some of your time, please join us on #debian-dpl . I'll take care of keeping the project informed of further evolution, in particular about the communication channels we will pick for day to day activities and accountability. Events / public communication I've spent most of my remaining Debian time in October attending events on behalf of the Project, in particular: On the topic of public communication, I've also coordinated with the press team an answer to a press inquiry about Secure Boot (which has become part of this article), and happily vouched for the Ubuntu charity marathon, adding some Debian challenges to it. Delegations As largely overdue matters, I've finalized the delegations mentioned last month, namely: FTP masters, New Members Front Desk, and Policy editors. Assets and legal stuff Miscellanea Now let's all go back to RC Bug squashing to make Wheezy a reality. SPAM-my link of the month is http://udd.debian.org/bugs.cgi and its various "views" at the bottom of the page. Cheers.
PS the day-to-day activity log for October 2012 is available at the usual place master:/srv/leader/news/bits-from-the-DPL.txt.201210

John Goerzen: Mexico Part 4: Street Scenes and Architecture

The fourth in a series; see also parts 1, 2, and 3. This post is going to be more a photolog than a narrative, and I apologize in advance for it being a bit disjointed. I ve already touched on these themes a bit in the other post, but now it s time to focus on them. Immediately after leaving the airport, it s quite clear that things are a little different. Trees are square. People ride around in the backs of pickups sometimes on top of piles of debris. Left turns are made in front of other lanes of traffic going the same way. But those are just the things obvious from the road. It s a lot of fun to enjoy the differences. First, the ubiquitous square trees. They look pretty, and are found all over. I also found carefully-manicured trees in cone shapes, more cylindrical shapes, etc. It seems that tree care is taken seriously in Mexico. It was also not uncommon to see the bottom few feet of a tree painted white. A park in Guanajuato had a whole bunch of trees carefully trimmed. And from up on the mountain, it still looked impressive (the green area behind the dome). Driving in Mexico was interesting for a lot of reasons. The highways there aren t quite as limited access as the freeways in the USA. It was quite common to see bicyclists, walkers, a mule, or some cattle ambling along the side of the road. Roadside taco stands don t require taking an exit. You just pull off the road because it s right there. Some sights were a bit surprising. Cattle in a pickup, with rope, for instance. Or cattle crossing the highway on the overpass. Street vendors were everywhere. Stop at a red light and someone might spring from the side of the road and suddenly start washing your windshield (expecting a tip); try to sell you flowers, juice, or bug zappers; or even throw business card-sized advertisements for adult websites into any open windows they can find. One night we saw an incredible fire juggler. I would have tipped him well but he was too far away to do so before the light turned green. Mexico s history stretches back into prehistoric times, and we saw the Teuchitlan ruins at Guachimontones one day. It was truly a remarkable feeling to be able to walk down the middle of the ancient ball court, or to climb up one pyramid and see the other from it. It s not exactly architecture, but Jacob and Oliver sure enjoyed visiting the hot springs at Bosque de la Primavera. Jacob still remembers that where the steam is, the water is 200 degrees, and we CAN T TOUCH IT THERE! Back in Guadalajara, here s a photo from the inside of the grand old cathedral. Compared to the cathedrals we saw in Europe, this was of a similar general size and design, and perhaps only slightly newer. But one big difference: worshipers outnumbered tourists at every Mexican cathedral I saw, whether in the center of Guadalajara or at a rainy intersection in Guanajuato or a plaza in Tlaquepaque. It made them feel more alive, and perhaps more sacred as well. One surprise was seeing people sitting on the steps of the cathedral in downtown Guadalajara selling trinkets such as beads. I think the only other place I had seen something like that was in New Orleans. All of Guadalajara s Centro was beautiful. Much of it survives from colonial days; I think a person could spend days exploring its museums and buildings. Way too many of my 900 photos were taken in Centro to post on the blog, but just for flavor, here s one of the less than historic scenes. Yes, that is a bus shaped like a tequila bottle. Fountains were beautiful and common across Mexico. A few of them were easily reachable by boys, and ours sure loved those. There was a lot of public art, including this interesting chair/skeleton/I m not sure what it is: And, just for good measure while walking around Centro, they tossed in an apparent Redundant Array of Inexpensive Typewriters. I don t know what they were doing, but there were about a dozen guys sitting out in the sun typing on their manual typewriters on their identical tables. And who can leave Guadalajara without seeing one of North America s most impressive traffic circles. I ve got to hand it to the Mexicans for making something that is normally really boring into an interesting work of art. Over in Guanajuato, a lot of driving takes place in the city s vast underground tunnel system. Here s a scene emerging from one of them. Guanajuato was already getting decorated for Mexican independence day festivities (Sept. 15-16) while we were there. Here s a typical Guanajuato street scene. Many of the streets were closed to traffic and perhaps not wide enough to handle vehicles anyway. Those streets had a wonderful peaceful and slow feel to them. I feel that I ve barely done the trip justice with this post. The feelings of walking down a beautiful Guanajuato street, or stepping into a Spanish cathedral, or even seeing a bunch of guys with typewriters, just can t be replicated. It s brimming with history and character, and shouldn t be missed.

Petter Reinholdtsen: Lenny->Squeeze upgrades, apt vs aptitude with the Gnome and KDE desktop

I'm still running upgrade testing of the Lenny Gnome and KDE Desktop, but have not had time to spend on reporting the status. Here is a short update based on a test I ran 20101118. I still do not know what a correct migration should look like, so I report any differences between apt and aptitude and hope someone else can see if anything should be changed. Bastian Blank: New software: python-dvdvideo

After a long time, I decided to write again. I decided to start with software I wrote for my own usage that could be usefull for other people. I'll start with python-dvdvideo, a DVD-Video reader written in Python 3, and the reference tool dvd-video-backup-image, a generic DVD-Video dumper. Lets see, if this blog will see more postings in the future.
Intention I started to write this software, because libdvdread was often unable to decipher my newly purchased video DVDs. libdvdread expects a rather valid structure of the filesystem and other metadata on the disk. It will forcefully bail out on several error conditions. So I often ended patching libdvdread to make dvdbackup able to read the new disks. Usually there are two ways to create backups of such DVDs, as files or complete images. Dumping them as files have large problems if there are certain defects in the filesystem, like some space is referenced in several titlesets. I have a disk that produces 25GiB of output during such a dump. So the less problematic way to do that is to dump the complete image. That is the way I used in the tool I built on top of this.
Parts The software is devided into several parts. First a small UDF reader. On top of this comes a DVD video reader. It makes use of libdvdcss wrapper. All of this is used to implement a small tool to dump whole images. I will describe this parts here.
UDF reader The UDF reader implements a minimal set of features. I implemented only the stuff I found as needed and used in the available DVDs. This reader allows to read the lowlevel UDF, used as base of all video DVDs.
DVD video reader The dvd video reader uses the UDF reader to get the necessary information from the disk. Again this reader is quiet smallish. It only trusts the UDF for the starts of titlesets and expects that anything else is listed in the info files. This allows to read even discs with broken filesystems, which are really common.
libdvdcss wrapper The libdvdcss wrapper is implemented using ctypes. The ctypes library allows easy access to functions defines in shared object. The library allows calling of the functions and maps arguments and return values to the Python datatypes. This wrapper allows me to read also encrypted DVDs.
Image dumper This tool allows to dump a encrypted video DVD into a file. It tries to detect encrypted (video/vob files) and unencrypted (info files, otherwise used space) parts of the disk. This way it is able to dump anything, as long as it can read the filesystem and info files. However, some discs contains overlapping areas, which can't be that easily deguised. The tool includes a small conflict resolver that handles overlapping parts. It uses a set of rules to allow some types to coexist and some to be modified. On of the rules relabels things included in an info files but also a title vob as always unencrypted. With this resolver, most of the problems can be handled and we get a playable result.
License and distribution This package is licensed GPL 3 or later. It is for new distributed via Alioth.
Conclusion This tool allows me to dump all video DVDs I got my hands on in the last time. It allows me to watch the videos on my notebook that have no optical disc reader on its own. Maybe someone may need such a tool also.

Petter Reinholdtsen: Lenny->Squeeze upgrades, apt vs aptitude with the Gnome desktop

Here is a short update on my my Debian Lenny->Squeeze upgrade testing. Here is a summary of the difference for Gnome when it is upgraded by apt-get and aptitude. I'm not reporting the status for KDE, because the upgrade crashes when aptitude try because of missing conflicts (#584861 and #585716). At the end of the upgrade test script, dpkg -l is executed to get a complete list of the installed packages. Based on this I see these differences when I did a test run today. As usual, I do not really know what the correct set of packages would be, but thought it best to publish the difference. Installed using apt-get, missing with aptitude

Petter Reinholdtsen: Lenny->Squeeze upgrades, removals by apt and aptitude

My testing of Debian upgrades from Lenny to Squeeze continues, and I've finally made the upgrade logs available from http://people.skolelinux.org/pere/debian-upgrade-testing/. I am now testing dist-upgrade of Gnome and KDE in a chroot using both apt and aptitude, and found their differences interesting. This time I will only focus on their removal plans. After installing a Gnome desktop and the laptop task, apt-get wants to remove 72 packages when dist-upgrading from Lenny to Squeeze. The surprising part is that it want to remove xorg and all xserver-xorg-video* drivers. Clearly not a good choice, but I am not sure why. When asking aptitude to do the same, it want to remove 129 packages, but most of them are library packages I suspect are no longer needed. Both of them want to remove bluetooth packages, which I do not know. Perhaps these bluetooth packages are obsolete? For KDE, apt-get want to remove 82 packages, among them kdebase which seem like a bad idea and xorg the same way as with Gnome. Asking aptitude for the same, it wants to remove 192 packages, none which are too surprising. I guess the removal of xorg during upgrades should be investigated and avoided, and perhaps others as well. Here are the complete list of planned removals. The complete logs is available from the URL above. Note if you want to repeat these tests, that the upgrade test for kde+apt-get hung in the tasksel setup because of dpkg asking conffile questions. No idea why. I worked around it by using 'echo >> /proc/pidofdpkg/fd/0' to tell dpkg to continue. apt-get gnome 72

Bastian Blank: Broken DVDs

Today I got another broken DVD. It is the special edition of The Shawshank Redemption. It is rather new and libdvdread just chokes on it. At least the old one does, while the version in sid is able to read them, thanks to a small patch. The DVD exploits a feature of the standard. The filesystem on it (UDF) provides a size for the info files (VTS_XX_0.IFO) and the corresponding backup file (VTS_XX_0.BUP). This sizes are void, only the offsets within the files matters. The sizes are just too small and libdvdread checked that while reading them. Thanks to the patch, libdvdread now updates its internal knowledge while parsing the file. With the fix it is possible to play the DVD, at least with mplayer. But I want to play it on my machine without optical drive. I used dvdbackup to read other DVDs but it simply failed this time. This DVD also have broken backup files. They have different sizes, sometimes they even look empty, and contents than the real ones. With the corrent amount of force (just ignoring them) and some magic (#467075) dvdbackup copies something to disk which is playable with mplayer (libdvdread) and totem (libdvdnav). Okay, nothing is complete. This DVD contains another title set which seems to be never referenced. It have a completely bogus info file and a 1GB menu VOB. As I have a copy now, I'm away, watching a really great movie.

Matthew Garrett

Anyway, back to pure Linux stuff. A while ago, the Ubuntu Technical Board were asked to take a look at Automatix. I've finally got around to doing so, and here are my initial conclusions. I'd appreciate any factual corrections, and note that at this point this is my individual opinion rather than any sort of official statement.

Automatix is a combination system configuration/package installation
tool, aimed at making it easy for users to install features like
graphics drivers, media codecs and software not distributed as part of
the Ubuntu distribution. It is provided as a .deb file containing a
python GUI frontend that calls out to a shell backend. The frontend
parses an XML file which contains module descriptions and function
names for installing and uninstalling modules, with these functions
being part of the shell backend. An install module will typically
check whether another package manager is running, and if not either
install a set of debs or download and manually install a
tarball. Uninstall modules generally remove the same software or clean
up the manually installed files.

The following is a list of identified issues with the current version
of Automatix - it is the result of a few hours of investigation, so
may not be complete.
Conclusion:

Automatix exists to satisfy a genuine need, and further work should be
carried out to determine whether these user requirements can be
satisfied within the distribution as a whole. However, in its current
form Automatix is actively dangerous to systems - ranging from damage
to small items of user configuration, through removing user-installed
packages without adequate prompting or warning and up to the (small
but existing) potential to leave a system in an unbootable state.

The current design of Automatix precludes any reasonable way to fix
some of these problems. It is attempting to fulfil the role of a
high-level package manager without actually handling any sort of
dependency resolution itself.

A more reasonable method of integrating Automatix's functionality into
Ubuntu would be for the Automatix team to provide deb files to act as
installers for the software currently provided. These could then be
installed through the existing package manager interfaces. This would
solve many of the above problems while still providing the same level
of functionality.

In its current form Automatix is unsupportable, and a mechanism for
flagging bugs from machines with Automatix installed may provide a
valuable aid for determining whether issues are due to supported
distribution packages or third party software installers.

Gustavo Franco: Why install more multimedia codecs in Debian Etch GNU/Linux?

The blog All About Linux wrote "Install multimedia codecs, libdvdcss in Debian Etch GNU/Linux". Small and interesting article, but there's a huge mistake there: "... so as to enable you to play multimedia files which are encoded using proprietary or closed formats such as Microsoft's WMV files or Apple's quick time files. uh, no?!

The fact is that Debian Etch Desktop (GNOME is the default, KDE and Xfce are alternatives) gives you totem, totem-xine and totem-mozilla. In other words you're able to watch .asf, .avi, .mov, .wma and more not only 'out of the box', not only using totem, but from any gecko based browser and you've two installed by default: iceweasel and epiphany. If in doubt run "aptitude update && aptitude install gnome-desktop" go to the web browser and type 'about:plugins' before installing non-free software. Say hello to Etch, not Woody.

Closing, I recommend the movie clips from Apple's website. I don't like their ads, but the fresh movie trailers are cool.

Next.
