Ana Beatriz Guerrero Lopez: DebConf14 and ten years contributing to Debian

It has been one week since I m back from DebConf14 and I m still recovering and catching up with things. DebConf14 has been amazing, it has been great to be back after missing it for two years. Thanks a lot to everybody who helped to make it real. On my side, I helped a bit in the talks team. During DebConf14, I got the opportunity to discuss with Rene Mayorga about the MIA work-flow and we also got some feedback in the MIA BoF. We have plenty of ideas to implement and we re aiming to improve things during this next year. This summer has been also 10 years since I started contributing to Debian. It s hard to believe. Ten years ago I barely knew where to start helping and now I have an endless TODO list of things I would like to do. And always during DebConf this list seems to grow ten times faster than usual. Thankfully, also motivation increases a lot :)

Christian Perrier: Developers per country (June 2011) - 3rd take

See comments at the end about this 3rd version This is time again for yet another bubulle game: counting the number of developers per country. I already published such analysis in 2010 and 2009. So, here we are with the June 2011 version, sorted by the ratio of *active* developers per million population for each country.
Act: number of active developers
Dev: total number of developers
A/M: number of active devels per million pop.
D/M: number of devels per million pop.
2009: rank in 2009
2010: rank in 2010
June 2011: rank now

A few interesting facts: v2 comment: This is the second version of this blog post. I have been pointed that the population I was using for "Ireland" is indeed the population of the entire island, so Republic of Ireland (Eire) plus Northern Ireland (Ulster). We may guess that people listing "IE" as their country are citizens of the Republic of Ireland, so the population to use is that of this part of the island. As a consequence, Ireland is bumped up to 6th rank instead of 9th. v3 comment: Doh. Since I'm doing this survey, I was always adding people using "sv" as country to Sweden. This is a quite common mistake and it was happening in the past. But now, there is only ONE developer who uses "sv" as country, this is Rene Mayorga and he definitely lives in El Salvador, not Sweden. As a consequence, Sweden lost one developer (but keeps its rank) and El Salvador now appears at rank 36. It is not a "new" country as Rene is DD for quite some time.

Martin Zobel-Helas: Congratulation go to KiBi

#600000

[Update: and to Rene Mayorga, for winning the 600000thBugContest!]

Christian Perrier: Bug #600000 has been reported

Here it is. Debian had six hundred thousand bugs reported. Cyril "KiBi" Brulebois is the winner in the "race of bug #600000" by reporting "db4.5: FTBFS on mips: configure: error: No off_t type." against the "db4.5" package. Such "honor" is very well deserved. Cyril is a tireless buildd admin and reports dozens of ports build failures, which is a significant part of the work involved in a release. Kudos. Once again, the French gang becomes visible in this as "we" had #200000 (by Michel Grentzinger) and #400000 (by /me). Bravo, Cyril. Rene Mayorga is the winner of the "bug #600000 contest" bet. He planned it to be reported on October 10th 2010 and only missed it by 2 days. Please note that Rene already won the "bug #500000 contest" (by missing the date by 1 day.... Congratulations again, Rene.

Christian Perrier: Bug #500000 has been reported

Here it is. Debian had half a million bugs reported. Nobuhiro Iwamatsu is the winner in the "race of bug #500000" by reporting "Please add dh_installdefoma in debhelper.mk" against the "cdbs" package. Rene Mayorga is the winner of the "bug #500000 contest" bet. He planned it to be reported on September 23rd and just missed the real date by one day. Congratulations, Rene.

Christian Perrier: 499585

This is the highest bug number as of now. Will we turn bug #500000 this week-end? This is fairly unlikely. So, the best chances to win the bet are for Rene Mayorga. If I'm wrong and #500000 is reached before Sunday 23:59 UTC, then Fabian Fagerholm wins the bet. Suspense... Fabian, I *will* watch your own bug reports! MBF forbidden for you...:-)
