Simon Richter: This is why we can't have nice things.

A group of Debianites is currently working on machine-readable copyright files for Debian packages. Since I have to do this work anyway, whether the result is structured or not, I thought I could make uclibc a guinea pig for that too (it already is for xcontrol). That is harder than it sounds, though. The package consists of about 2,000 files, and each of them has multiple copyright holders who each imposed their own licence terms. A fun year lies ahead.

Simon Richter: I can has my sanity back plz?

Due to popular demand, there is now a new version of mISDN in experimental. The usual warning applies: it will break your system, it will not work out of the box and whatever you do to make it not Oops your kernel during boot will probably no longer work with the next upload. YMMV. HTH. HAND. You are demanding an explanation? Well, there are a few problems with this package that are not trivial to solve. The most visible of them is that it provides drivers for a bunch of ISDN cards that are also supported by the mainline kernel. The hotplug subsystem handles this situation totally gracefully and simply loads all of them. Now if that wasn't nasty enough by itself, mISDN also wants to set up the entire stack when a hardware driver is loaded. All the modules that aren't there at this point are replaced by NULL pointers. As there is no formal dependency on the modules providing layers 1-3, I invite you to guess the stability of your kernel at this point. Upstream has an init script that parses XML files.

MJ Ray: Look who's squatting on Jono Bacon

So, for some reason, I was using advogato and, for some reason, I was looking at jono and, for some reason, I clicked on the link to the JonoCam. What I saw was unpleasant and not what I was expecting. Someone's squatting on the JonoCam address, hiding behind eNom's privacy service. In fact, it looks like all of kdedevelopers.net is spam now, including jono.kdedevelopers.net. Not only that, but http://www.jonobacon.co.uk/ is squatted too, by futuregate aka Mindcom Internet Limited of 20 Meridian Way, Meridian Business Park, Norwich NR7 0TA. If you're reading this from near Norwich, would you post some pictures of the home of these serial domain-squatters, please? So I hopped onto the lugradio IRC and asked jono. Apparently he lost it ages ago(!) nominet says the domain was registered in 2004 and last updated April 2007, so I didn't know if that means it's been a while, or just a few months. Does the registration date change if an owner loses control? astinus told me that it does. Anyway, I wonder how many advogato users have disused person pages with spam/squatted links. Is there a nice way we could spot them all and tag them somehow? Is there some common "about me" format which advogato (and social networking sites?) could use to keep up-to-date on our movements? List three locations in case we lose our primary domain? Also, I had another email yesterday from someone apologising for losing control of their domain, asking me to change my links and I've removed a couple more from my friends bookmarks category recently. Are people still losing personal domains to squatters? If so, is there a new reason for this, or is it the same old problems of registrar-lock-in and it being cheaper to register a new domain than to go to dispute resolution? (2007-09-09: 4 comments)

MJ Ray: No-monthly-fee UK Card Payment Web Service?

I want a way to take small, infrequent, one-off card payments on my web sites. Some of my customers much prefer to pay by card and I'd be happy to do that, if there's a decent card payment service. Is there one? I've not found it yet. What do I want? The main thing is not to have a significant monthly fee. I'd rather not be paying if I'm not using the service, but I'd probably stomach up to 5% transaction fee for a good credit card handler. The 8% fee listed by Moneybookers seems a little steep, but I might use it as a last resort. I'd prefer no automatic "inactivity" account closure if I don't use it for a couple of months. Sometimes I take no card payments for a while, then need to handle several at once. I'd also prefer a cooperative or mutual, but that seems unlikely in such a small field. So far, I've only found two suitable UK Card Payment Services - Paypal and NoChex - and I've used both, but I've now got problems with both! Paypal won't let me take my money out to my business account. To do that, I need to upgrade my account, but Paypal do not list LLP as a valid type of business and won't fix my bug reports by web, email or telephone. Last time I telephoned, after patiently explaining to them what an LLP is, I was told to put a different business type on the form. That scared me, so I asked for email confirmation of the instruction, which they said they'd send, but it never arrived. NoChex froze my account without warning, due to inactivity. I've sent in their reactivation forms a few months ago and had no reply. I've also filed a web ticket today, but I've done that before. They don't even list a telephone number any more. That's a worrying sign in a bank. So, both of these providers suck for the above reasons and I still need a way to take this month's card payments. All the UK banks charge monthly fees, don't they? Are there European card services which I should consider? International? (2007-09-07: 5 comments)

MJ Ray: Current Issues / Re: Ride Report: Kewstoke-Congresbury

"I used to ride the track between Puxton and Congresbury (I think that it is called Dolemoor Lane) on a regular basis as my preferred method of getting to Congresbury. However, I discovered that, despite appearances, it is legally a footpath and not a bridleway, and therefore we don't have the right to cycle along it."

Well, that's a surprise! Most of Dolemoor Lane (it looks like it's called that to me too) is marked on council maps as bridleway and they're based on OS maps, so should be accurate.  The middle section (west of the Strawberry Line crossing until the road from Old Weston Road joins it) definitely isn't.  But it doesn't matter much now, as it's pretty unrideable.

Where do you go from there on your leisure route?  Sandford, Banwell and Cheddar all looked pretty easy from Puxton.

Will you be trekking out to the cycle forum this evening?

Simon Richter: Three... Two... One... Zero.

The latest version of d2x-xl works quite well, so I've started packaging it. Since it needs the data from the commercial game to work, it will probably end up in contrib. The interesting thing is that there is another project, Into Cerberon, working on a Doom 3 mod with free game data -- it would be interesting to see whether both projects could be combined in order to get a completely free game. Difficulty: Into Cerberon is planning for a triangle based engine while d2x-xl thinks in cubes. Update: Into Cerberon use the Doom 3, not the Quake 3 engine. Thanks "zulu9" for noticing. Also, Josh alerts me of some interesting (cough) licensing issues around this code. As I'm still busy wading through the uclibc source compiling a proper list of attributions and licenses (ftp-master thinks a blanket statement "If you link against this, the LGPL applies to you, if you look at the files, please see each individual file" is not enough -- I can somehow see their point, but it takes ages to do that) that will have somewhat lower priority. I know why I rewrite things from scratch rather than fix them these days...

MJ Ray: Installing a complex perl web application

Time to revisit this topic. I asked debian perl for advice on packaging a CGI with modules and my current solution is to use ExtUtils::MakeMaker - I'm just writing the PL files which will generate the configuration files. I also took a look at Module::Build and PAR::Tutorial but I'm not convinced that they're both as portable and as smooth as if I can do it all from MakeMaker. There are occasional posts about Module::Build problems on lists like this one on ledgersmb-users which worry me. After koha-1.2's bespoke installer, I really want to make it as easy and simple as possible, for both development and use. There are also periodic debates about M::B at perlmonks too. Maybe we can use PAR later, like this perlmonks post suggests and apparently KrangCMS does. Now, what have I missed? (2007-09-07: 3 comments)

MJ Ray: National Issues / Cycle Tracks and Driveways

North Somerset is better than most about building cycle lanes and cycle tracks which are actually useful.  There are a couple of nasties (Winterstoke Road!), but most cycle tracks here are the useful "bypass" type with few junctions, rather than the stupid "white paint on a footpath" type.

However, this example from Harlow shows how things can go badly wrong: I can't believe it's a cycle track and I hear there's a similar example just been built in Cambridge.  Give way at every driveway???  Of course, faced with such things, most sensible cyclists will stay on the road, where it should be safer, but now motorists will abuse them with "get off the road" even more.

I doubt bad cycle tracks are ever going to be bad enough to get councillors thrown out at an election, so how can we stop such daft farcilities getting built?

MJ Ray: Stuffing Standards Bodies and Network-unlocking iPhones

Here are link-summaries of two interesting topics which have developed while I was away: the OOXML vote-buying scandal and the iPhone unlocking:-
Microsoft accused of rigging OOXML votes - ZDNet UK
A good summary of the start of this problem, in a complaint from FSFE. Fairly full description of the Swedish incident and suggestion that it's happening elsewhere. One Paid Partnership Programme One Vote, anyone?
SIS declared its own vote invalid
The Swedish standards body will not vote, due to a technical failure in the Microsoft-stuffed ballot.
New Zealand OOXML rejection 'not final' - ZDNet UK
It looks like opponents of OOXML are negiotiating surrender. Worrying.
NJ 17 year old Kid creates hack for the Apple iphone opens carrier network access beyond AT&T open4.org - create. share. earn.
It cracks me up that the iPhone was cracked, even if it did take him over 500 hours. I read it first on open4, which does the right thing and links both of George Hotz's sites.
BBC NEWS Technology Teenage hacker unlocks the iPhone
Slightly more information, but fewer links, from the BBC. They don't even seem to link the blog which is cited as a source. Very strange approach to the web from the BBC.
VOIP IP Telephony: iPhone hacker saga continues! Hotz gets $30000 for the phone
Then the iPhone was traded for a car...
Code to unlock iPhone cracked
Finally, this morning, I saw CNN report that a software-only crack is available. Network-locked phones are so 1990s anyway.

MJ Ray: Current Issues / Ride Report: Kewstoke-Congresbury

In preparation for Wednesday's cycle forum meeting at Backwell station (6.30pm), I went for a ride to Congresbury.

I followed roughly the route out along Ebdon Lane and Hewish bridges shown on this javascript map but on the way there, I went south from Puxton and turned off Nye Road onto the Strawberry Line (NCN route 26) to test it out.

The main surface seems to be very loose gravel on top of a very hard subsurface.  It's uneven in places, but I think I still averaged about 10mph. At each end of the route, the connecting paths are mud tracks.  The left turn just before Congresbury station is unsignposted. It's not a bad route, but a long diversion to go to Congresbury. The whole ride out took about an hour in total, going at a fairly gentle pace.

Coming back, I rode along the bridleway that is pretty direct from Congresbury to Puxton. Unfortunately, somebody has tried to fill in some uneven sections with rubble since I rode it last year. The route is now "get off and walk" in several places and uncomfortable otherwise.

I think I'll be riding along the A370 from Wick Road to Congresbury on Wednesday evening. If only there was a track across Tutshill sluices...

In other cycling news, the police have an undercover bike which they'll leave lying around, see if it gets nicked, then track the thieves back to their lair.

MJ Ray: Latest silly trick with udev and a USB audio player

Here's my latest silly trick with the udev rules discussed previously. Add a udev rule of ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sd*[!0-9]", ENV ID_SERIAL =="10d6_USB_2.0(HS)_Flash_Disk_A00000000001", RUN+="/usr/local/bin/dapsync" where dapsync is something like this script:-
/sbin/mount /mnt/USB-DAP \
&& cd /opt/Podcasts \
&&   /bin/tar --create --remove-files * \
       /bin/tar --extract --directory /Mount/USB-DAP
/sbin/umount /Mount/USB-DAP \
&& /bin/ogg123 -q /home/mjr/House/Audio/three-note.ogg
and fstab has a line for /Mount/USB-DAP pointing to the right device/location thing in /dev/disk/by-id Then, build up podcasts under /opt/Podcasts, plug the audio player 10d6_USB_2.0(HS)_Flash_Disk_A00000000001 into the right port and wait for the three notes to play...

MJ Ray: Blogging on Other Sites

Some of my blogging is going to take place on other sites from now on. Sometimes for money reasons, sometimes for audience reasons. Eagle-eyed readers may have spotted that I've already switched on a feed of my WsM Forum writing and my new cycle-racing feed should go live in the middle of next week. I'll still be archiving those posts, just in case the other sites go off-line, and they still appear in my "all posts" feeds. I may move my satellite TV stuff off-site soon too, which would leave programming, webmastering and my cooperative business posts on my personal site. This means a site which "fits together" more neatly than my current mix, I think. After that, I may edit the categories again, merging koha back into hacks. Are there other changes which I should consider?

I'll post more times next week. I'd bet on a strong showing from Caisse d'Epargne after a relatively quiet TdF. Who would you tip? If you've not got your satellite set yet, some Lidl specials are still available and most Maplin branches have sets. Finding the broadcasts at 19 east is pretty easy in the UK. See my asteFAQ for hints and links. I've still not fixed my dish up properly, yet it gets most 19 east transmissions.

MJ Ray: Announcement

"BOWN. Walter Sydney (Wally). Passed away on Monday, August 20th, 2007, aged 74 years. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 30th, 12.30pm, Weston-super-Mare Crematorium. Family flowers only, donations if desired for Weston Hospicecare, c/o The Elms Funeral Directors, 50 Baker Street, Weston-super-Mare. Telephone 01934 616006."
(From the Weston & Somerset Mercury, 23rd August 2007 issue) So I'm not blogging much just now. I think usual service should resume Friday 31 August.

MJ Ray: Hamburg Classic

NDR are broadcasting the Hamburg Classic in DVB (digital) and PAL (analogue) at 19 east at 11-14 GMT today, while ARD at 19 east and 13 east overlaps at 12.30-15.00 GMT, presumably including the closing stages. Notably, this race has excluded Tour de France winner Contador, apparently as well as everyone else even mentioned in connection with the Fuentes affair. Yesterday's last stages of the Burgos and the Deutschland-Tour seemed surprisingly unsurprising, with Juan Mauricio Soler and Jens Voigt kept their respective leads.

MJ Ray: Fringe Benefits of LUGs: USB Flash Stick Devices

I might be the last to notice, but when trying to answer the LUG question
"All I want to do is mount a particular USB stick to a directory /mnt/particular_usb_stick/ without having to go check on what device it is and editing the script that does the mounting every time."
I discovered that I seem to have a /dev/disk/by-id/usb-0930_USB_Flash_Memory_LONGHEXSTRING-part1 and an even less meaningful (but hopefully globally unique) /dev/disk/by-uuid/ device by default already. That'll make a lot of things much simpler. (2007-08-19: 2 comments)

MJ Ray: Free Software Competitions

Georg Greve of FSFE asks people to Submit your Free Software projects for the Trophees du Libre - closing date 1 October 2007. I also saw somewhere a link to the entry form for the New Zealand OS Awards - the event is in October, but I can't see a closing date on the form. If you're a non-programmer and want to do something very helpful for a project like Koha, please consider writing us a nomination. Koha won a Trophee du Libre a couple of years ago. By the time the deadline hits this year, maybe 3.0 will be out.
