Gunnar Wolf: Finishing the course on "Free Software and Open Standards"

A couple of months ago, I was invited to give the starting course for the Masters degree in Free Software in the Universidad Andina Sim n Bol var university. UASB is a multinational university, with campuses in (at least) Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia and Colombia; I was doubtful at first regarding the seriousness of this proposal and the viability of the program, but time made my doubts disappear. Bolivia is going through an interesting process, as they have one of the strongest worded government mandates for migration to free software for the public administration in the next couple of years; this migration has prompted the interest of many professionals in the country. In particular, we have over 40 registered people for this Masters degree. Studying a Masters degree is a long-term commitment which signifies a big time investment, and although many of the student are quite new to the idea of free software, they are willing to spend this time (and money, as the university is privately owned and charges for its enrollment). I gave this class together with Alejandro Miranda (a.k.a. @pooka), as we have a very good pair-teaching dynamics; we had already given many conferences together, but this is the first time we had the opportunity to share a whole course and the experience was very good. We have read the students' logs, and many of them clearly agree with this. I had to skip two of the (ten) lessons, as I travelled from Mexico to Argentina halfway through it (of course, we brought the babies to meet my wife's family and friends!), so we had also the honor of having Esteban Lima fill in for those sessions. I am very happy and grateful that the University took care to record our presentations and intend to record and put online all of the classes; as we were the first in the program, there were some understandable hiccups and some sessions were lost, but most are available. Here they are, in case you are interested in refering to them:

I think the material we used and developed fit well what was expected from us, and we had fun giving somewhat heterodox readings on our movement.

Lunar: Reproducible builds: week 10 in Stretch cycle

What happened about the reproducible builds effort this week: Media coverage Daniel Stender published an English translation of the article which originally appeared in Linux Magazin in Admin Magazine. Toolchain fixes Fixes landed in the Debian archive: Lunar submitted to Debian the patch already sent upstream adding a --clamp-mtime option to tar. Patches have been submitted to add support for SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH to txt2man (Reiner Herrmann), epydoc (Reiner Herrmann), GCC (Dhole), and Doxygen (akira). Dhole uploaded a new experimental debhelper to the reproducible repository which exports SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH. As part of the experiment, the patch also sets TZ to UTC which should help with most timezone issues. It might still be problematic for some packages which would change their settings based on this. Mattia Rizzolo sent upstream a patch originally written by Lunar to make the generate-id() function be deterministic in libxslt. While that patch was quickly rejected by upstream, Andrew Ayer came up with a much better one which sadly could have some performance impact. Daniel Veillard replied with another patch that should be deterministic in most cases without needing extra data structures. It's impact is currently being investigated by retesting packages on reproducible.debian.net. akira added a new option to sbuild for configuring the path in which packages are built. This will be needed for the srebuild script. Niko Tyni asked Perl upstream about it using the __DATE__ and __TIME__ C processor macros. Packages fixed The following 143 packages became reproducible due to changes in their build dependencies: alot, argvalidate, astroquery, blender, bpython, brian, calibre, cfourcc, chaussette, checkbox-ng, cloc, configshell, daisy-player, dipy, dnsruby, dput-ng, dsc-statistics, eliom, emacspeak, freeipmi, geant321, gpick, grapefruit, heat-cfntools, imagetooth, jansson, jmapviewer, lava-tool, libhtml-lint-perl, libtime-y2038-perl, lift, lua-ldoc, luarocks, mailman-api, matroxset, maven-hpi-plugin, mknbi, mpi4py, mpmath, msnlib, munkres, musicbrainzngs, nova, pecomato, pgrouting, pngcheck, powerline, profitbricks-client, pyepr, pylibssh2, pylogsparser, pystemmer, pytest, python-amqp, python-apt, python-carrot, python-crypto, python-darts.lib.utils.lru, python-demgengeo, python-graph, python-mock, python-musicbrainz2, python-pathtools, python-pskc, python-psutil, python-pypump, python-repoze.sphinx.autointerface, python-repoze.tm2, python-repoze.what-plugins, python-repoze.what, python-repoze.who-plugins, python-xstatic-term.js, reclass, resource-agents, rgain, rttool, ruby-aggregate, ruby-archive-tar-minitar, ruby-bcat, ruby-blankslate, ruby-coffee-script, ruby-colored, ruby-dbd-mysql, ruby-dbd-odbc, ruby-dbd-pg, ruby-dbd-sqlite3, ruby-dbi, ruby-dirty-memoize, ruby-encryptor, ruby-erubis, ruby-fast-xs, ruby-fusefs, ruby-gd, ruby-git, ruby-globalhotkeys, ruby-god, ruby-hike, ruby-hmac, ruby-integration, ruby-ipaddress, ruby-jnunemaker-matchy, ruby-memoize, ruby-merb-core, ruby-merb-haml, ruby-merb-helpers, ruby-metaid, ruby-mina, ruby-net-irc, ruby-net-netrc, ruby-odbc, ruby-packet, ruby-parseconfig, ruby-platform, ruby-plist, ruby-popen4, ruby-rchardet, ruby-romkan, ruby-rubyforge, ruby-rubytorrent, ruby-samuel, ruby-shoulda-matchers, ruby-sourcify, ruby-test-spec, ruby-validatable, ruby-wirble, ruby-xml-simple, ruby-zoom, ryu, simplejson, spamassassin-heatu, speaklater, stompserver, syncevolution, syncmaildir, thin, ticgit, tox, transmissionrpc, vdr-plugin-xine, waitress, whereami, xlsx2csv, zathura. The following packages became reproducible after getting fixed: Some uploads fixed some reproducibility issues but not all of them: Patches submitted which have not made their way to the archive yet: reproducible.debian.net A new package set for the X Strike Force has been added. (h01ger) Bugs tagged with locale are now visible in the statistics. (h01ger) Some work has been done add tests for NetBSD. (h01ger) Many changes by Mattia Rizzolo have been merged on the whole infrastructure: debbindiff development Version 26 has been released on June 28th fixing the comparison of files of unknown format. (Lunar) A missing dependency identified in python-rpm affecting debbindiff installation without recommended packages was promptly fixed by Michal iha . Lunar also started a massive code rearchitecture to enhance code reuse and enable new features. Nothing visible yet, though. Documentation update josch and Mattia Rizzolo documented how to reschedule packages from Alioth. Package reviews 142 obsolete reviews have been removed, 344 added and 107 updated this week. Chris West (Faux) filled 13 new bugs for packages failing to build from sources. The following new issues have been added: snapshot_placeholder_replaced_with_timestamp_in_pom_properties, different_encoding, timestamps_in_documentation_generated_by_org_mode and timestamps_in_pdf_generated_by_matplotlib.

Lunar: Reproducible builds: week 9 in Stretch cycle

What happened about the reproducible builds effort this week: Toolchain fixes Norbert Preining uploaded texinfo/6.0.0.dfsg.1-2 which makes texinfo indices reproducible. Original patch by Chris Lamb. Lunar submitted recently rebased patches to make the file order of files inside .deb stable. akira filled #789843 to make tex4ht stop printing timestamps in its HTML output by default. Dhole wrote a patch for xutils-dev to prevent timestamps when creating gzip compresed files. Reiner Herrmann sent a follow-up patch for wheel to use UTC as timezone when outputing timestamps. Mattia Rizzolo started a discussion regarding the failure to build from source of subversion when -Wdate-time is added to CPPFLAGS which happens when asking dpkg-buildflags to use the reproducible profile. SWIG errors out because it doesn't recognize the aforementioned flag. Trying to get the .buildinfo specification to more definitive state, Lunar started a discussion on storing the checksums of the binary package used in dpkg status database. akira discovered while proposing a fix for simgrid that CMake internal command to create tarballs would record a timestamp in the gzip header. A way to prevent it is to use the GZIP environment variable to ask gzip not to store timestamps, but this will soon become unsupported. It's up for discussion if the best place to fix the problem would be to fix it for all CMake users at once. Infrastructure-related work Andreas Henriksson did a delayed NMU upload of pbuilder which adds minimal support for build profiles and includes several fixes from Mattia Rizzolo affecting reproducibility tests. Neils Thykier uploaded lintian which both raises the severity of package-contains-timestamped-gzip and avoids false positives for this tag (thanks to Tomasz Buchert). Petter Reinholdtsen filled #789761 suggesting that how-can-i-help should prompt its users about fixing reproducibility issues. Packages fixed The following packages became reproducible due to changes in their build dependencies: autorun4linuxcd, libwildmagic, lifelines, plexus-i18n, texlive-base, texlive-extra, texlive-lang. The following packages became reproducible after getting fixed: Some uploads fixed some reproducibility issues but not all of them: Untested uploaded as they are not in main: Patches submitted which have not made their way to the archive yet: debbindiff development debbindiff/23 includes a few bugfixes by Helmut Grohne that result in a significant speedup (especially on larger files). It used to exhibit the quadratic time string concatenation antipattern. Version 24 was released on June 23rd in a hurry to fix an undefined variable introduced in the previous version. (Reiner Herrmann) debbindiff now has a test suite! It is written using the PyTest framework (thanks Isis Lovecruft for the suggestion). The current focus has been on the comparators, and we are now at 93% of code coverage for these modules. Several problems were identified and fixed in the process: paths appearing in output of javap, readelf, objdump, zipinfo, unsqusahfs; useless MD5 checksum and last modified date in javap output; bad handling of charsets in PO files; the destination path for gzip compressed files not ending in .gz; only metadata of cpio archives were actually compared. stat output was further trimmed to make directory comparison more useful. Having the test suite enabled a refactoring of how comparators were written, switching from a forest of differences to a single tree. This helped removing dust from the oldest parts of the code. Together with some other small changes, version 25 was released on June 27th. A follow up release was made the next day to fix a hole in the test suite and the resulting unidentified leftover from the comparator refactoring. (Lunar) Documentation update Ximin Luo improved code examples for some proposed environment variables for reference timestamps. Dhole added an example on how to fix timestamps C pre-processor macros by adding a way to set the build date externally. akira documented her fix for tex4ht timestamps. Package reviews 94 obsolete reviews have been removed, 330 added and 153 updated this week. Hats off for Chris West (Faux) who investigated many fail to build from source issues and reported the relevant bugs. Slight improvements were made to the scripts for editing the review database, edit-notes and clean-notes. (Mattia Rizzolo) Meetings A meeting was held on June 23rd. Minutes are available. The next meeting will happen on Tuesday 2015-07-07 at 17:00 UTC. Misc. The Linux Foundation announced that it was funding the work of Lunar and h01ger on reproducible builds in Debian and other distributions. This was further relayed in a Bits from Debian blog post.

Lunar: Reproducible builds: week 8 in Stretch cycle

What happened about the reproducible builds effort this week: Toolchain fixes Andreas Henriksson has improved Johannes Schauer initial patch for pbuilder adding support for build profiles. Packages fixed The following 12 packages became reproducible due to changes in their build dependencies: collabtive, eric, file-rc, form-history-control, freehep-chartableconverter-plugin , jenkins-winstone, junit, librelaxng-datatype-java, libwildmagic, lightbeam, puppet-lint, tabble. The following packages became reproducible after getting fixed: Some uploads fixed some reproducibility issues but not all of them: Patches submitted which have not made their way to the archive yet: reproducible.debian.net Bugs with the ftbfs usertag are now visible on the bug graphs. This explain the recent spike. (h01ger) Andreas Beckmann suggested a way to test building packages using the funny paths that one can get when they contain the full Debian package version string. debbindiff development Lunar started an important refactoring introducing abstactions for containers and files in order to make file type identification more flexible, enabling fuzzy matching, and allowing parallel processing. Documentation update Ximin Luo detailed the proposal to standardize environment variables to pass a reference source date to tools that needs one (e.g. documentation generator). Package reviews 41 obsolete reviews have been removed, 168 added and 36 updated this week. Some more issues affecting packages failing to build from source have been identified. Meetings Minutes have been posted for Tuesday June 16th meeting. The next meeting is scheduled Tuesday June 23rd at 17:00 UTC. Presentations Lunar presented the project in French during Pas Sage en Seine in Paris. Video and slides are available.

Lunar: Reproducible builds: week 4 in Stretch cycle

What happened about the reproducible builds effort for this week: Toolchain fixes Lunar rebased our custom dpkg on the new release, removing a now unneeded patch identified by Guillem Jover. An extra sort in the buildinfo generator prevented a stable order and was quickly fixed once identified. Mattia Rizzolo also rebased our custom debhelper on the latest release. Packages fixed The following 30 packages became reproducible due to changes in their build dependencies: animal-sniffer, asciidoctor, autodock-vina, camping, cookie-monster, downthemall, flashblock, gamera, httpcomponents-core, https-finder, icedove-l10n, istack-commons, jdeb, libmodule-build-perl, libur-perl, livehttpheaders, maven-dependency-plugin, maven-ejb-plugin, mozilla-noscript, nosquint, requestpolicy, ruby-benchmark-ips, ruby-benchmark-suite, ruby-expression-parser, ruby-github-markup, ruby-http-connection, ruby-settingslogic, ruby-uuidtools, webkit2gtk, wot. The following packages became reproducible after getting fixed: Some uploads fixed some reproducibility issues but not all of them: Patches submitted which did not make their way to the archive yet: Also, the following bugs have been reported: reproducible.debian.net Holger Levsen made several small bug fixes and a few more visible changes: strip-nondeterminism Version 0.007-1 of strip-nondeterminism the tool to post-process various file formats to normalize them has been uploaded by Holger Levsen. Version 0.006-1 was already in the reproducible repository, the new version mainly improve the detection of Maven's pom.properties files. debbindiff development At the request of Emmanuel Bourg, Reiner Herrmann added a comparator for Java .class files. Documentation update Christoph Berg created a new page for the timestamps in manpages created by Doxygen. Package reviews 93 obsolete reviews have been removed, 76 added and 43 updated this week. New identified issues: timestamps in manpages generated by Doxygen, modification time differences in files extracted by unzip, tstamp task used in Ant build.xml, timestamps in documentation generated by ASDocGen. The description for build id related issues has been clarified. Meetings Holger Levsen announced a first meeting on Wednesday, June 3rd, 2015, 19:00 UTC. The agenda is amendable on the wiki. Misc. Lunar worked on a proof-of-concept script to import the build environment found in .buildinfo files to UDD. Lucas Nussbaum has positively reviewed the proposed schema. Holger Levsen cleaned up various experimental toolchain repositories, marking merged brances as such.

Norbert Preining: Tribute to Hermann Zapf

Last weekend Hermann Zapf, one of the greatest font designers and typographers of our times, has passed away at the age of 96. Much has been written about his life, his immense sphere of influence, his excellent typefaces, and some of the links to other obituaries can be found here at the end. There is nothing of value I can contribute, but let Hermann Zapf speak for himself with a few images from two books by or dedicated to him. zapf-heart-blood-ink The books I have taken these photos from are: zapf-books In his long life, Hermann Zapf has created a wide range of typefaces, some if which have become the main staple in the printing business, most notably Palatino, Janson, Optima, and Zapf Dingbats. But there are many more: zapf-alphabets While probably not as popular anymore as some years (decades?) ago, Palatino still is one of my favorite typefaces. I often wished to have the freedom to choose my own fonts for publications, but normally that doesn t happen. Palatino has found many offspring (or imitations?), and there are excellent renderings for use with (La)TeX, too. zapf-palatino Hermann Zapf also had connections with Don Knuth and the AMS (American Mathematical Society), and he designed for the AMS the Euler typeface, using Knuth s MetaFont program. zapf-euler Last weekend, when I heard of Hermann Zapf s death, I was at a conference at Tsukuba University. What a coincidence that all the signs in the building (floor numbers, indications, etc) were set optimain another of his great typefaces, the Optima. I had a strange feeling, and reset my presentation in Optima/Euler in honor of Hermann Zapf s great life. Although I never met Hermann Zapf personally I missed the TeX conferences where he participated it was to a great extent his influence that years ago I got started in typography. Living a life like he did, dedicating himself to the beauty and expressiveness of letters, design, calligraphy, seems like a dream for me. But beauty can be found even in the strangest equation in mathematics, the queerest theorem in logic. While not all of us are as gifted as Hermann Zapf in creating beauty, we should strive to increase our ability to appreciate the beauty. The beauty of letters is subtle, evasive, and needs training, that is practice, to be appreciated. Hermann Zapf taught us how even self-training can lead to excellence. His letters, which I meet every day, are a permanent reminder to strive for beauty and clarity, and never relent in our exercise. Raphaël Hertzog: My Free Software Activities in May 2015

My monthly report covers a large part of what I have been doing in the free software world. I write it for my donators (thanks to them!) but also for the wider Debian community because it can give ideas to newcomers and it s one of the best ways to find volunteers to work with me on projects that matter to me. Debian LTS This month I have been paid to work 10.25 hours on Debian LTS. In that time I did the following: Other Debian work Package Tracker. The Debian system administrators upgraded the machine hosting tracker.debian.org to jessie and I dealt with the fallout. Fixing the Apache configuration was easy but DACS also broke and I had to disable it (thus breaking login via sso.debian.org). Fortunately Enrico Zini and Martin Zobel-Helas debugged the problem and restored it. Sponsorship. I sponsored a dolibarr upload and many tryton-modules-* uploads to bring Tryton 3.6 to Debian (and granted DM rights on the newly introduced packages to Matthias Behrle who is maintaining those packages). Misc stuff. I discussed multiple feature requests with Dmitry Smirnov for dh-linktree. Packaging. I uploaded a new upstream version of cpputest. I did that twice actually because the first version had failing tests (see #784674). I also filed #784959 on blhc because I saw what looked like a false positive report for a missing hardening flag. I uploaded Django 1.8 to experimental. This is a major upstream release and shall ideally only be uploaded to sid after having reported problems on reverse dependencies. I doubt we will have the time to do this I started working on Publican 4.3.0 but the test suite fails and it s not even the fault of publican for once. It s a bug in libxml apparently. Thanks See you next month for a new summary of my activities.

Enrico Zini: 05

Internet references saved for May 2015 Instead of keeping substantial tabs open until I have read all of them, or losing them in the jungle of browser bookmarks, I have written a script that collects them into a file per month, and turns them into markdown files for my blog. This way I sort of know where to find them, and if I do not, some internet search might. And if I wish, I can even choose to share it. download as mailbox

Michal Čihař: Translating Sphinx documentation

Few days ago, I've started writing Odorik module to manipulate with API of one Czech mobile network operator. As usual, the code comes with documentation written in English. Given that vast majority of users are Czech, it sounds useful to have in Czech language as well. The documentation itself is written in Sphinx and built using Read the Docs. Using those to translate the documentation is quite easy. First step is to add necessary configuration to the Sphinx project as described in their Internationalization Quick Guide. It's matter of few configuration directives and invoking of sphinx-intl and the result can be like this commit. Once the code in repository is ready, you can start building translated documentation on the Read the docs. There is nice guide for that as well. All you need to do is to create another project, set it's language and link it from master project as translation. The last step is to find some translators to actually translate the document. For me the obvious choice was using Weblate, so the translation is now on Hosted Weblate. The mass import of several po files can be done by import_project management command. And thanks to all these you can now read Czech documentation for python Odorik module.

Daniel Pocock: Free and open WebRTC for the Fedora Community

In January 2014, we launched the rtc.debian.org service for the Debian community. An equivalent service has been in testing for the Fedora community at FedRTC.org. Some key points about the Fedora service:
  • The web front-end is just HTML, CSS and JavaScript. PHP is only used for account creation, the actual WebRTC experience requires no server-side web framework, just a SIP proxy.
  • The web code is all available in a Github repository so people can extend it.
  • Anybody who can authenticate against the FedOAuth OpenID is able to get a fedrtc.org test account immediately.
  • The server is built entirely with packages from CentOS 7 + EPEL 7, except for the SIP proxy itself. The SIP proxy is reSIProcate, which is available as a Fedora package and builds easily on RHEL / CentOS.
Testing it with WebRTC Create an RTC password and then log in. Other users can call you. It is federated, so people can also call from rtc.debian.org or from freephonebox.net. Testing it with other SIP softphones You can use the RTC password to connect to the SIP proxy from many softphones, including Jitsi or Lumicall on Android. Copy it The process to replicate the server for another domain is entirely described in the Real-Time Communications Quick Start Guide. Discuss it The FreeRTC mailing list is a great place to discuss any issues involving this site or free RTC in general. WebRTC opportunities expanding Just this week, the first batch of Firefox OS televisions are hitting the market. Every one of these is a potential WebRTC client that can interact with free communications platforms.

The following packages became reproducible after getting fixed: Some uploads fixed some reproducibility issues but not all of them: Patches submitted which did not make their way to the archive yet: reproducible.debian.net Alioth now hosts a script that can be used to redo builds and test for a package. This was preliminary done manually through requests over the IRC channel. This should reduce the number of interruptions for jenkins' maintainers The graph of the oldest build per day has been fixed. Maintainance scripts will not error out when they are no files to remove. Holger Levsen started work on being able to test variations of CPU features and build date (as in build in another month of 1984) by using virtual machines. debbindiff development Version 18 has been released. It will uses proper comparators for pk3 and info files. Tar member names are now assumed to be UTF-8 encoded. The limit for the maximum number of different lines has been removed. Let's see on reproducible.debian.net how it goes for pathological cases. It's now possible to specify both --html and --text output. When neither of them is specified, the default will be to print a text report on the standard output (thanks to Paul Wise for the suggestion). Documentation update Nicolas Boulenguez investigated Ada libraries. Package reviews 451 obsolete reviews have been removed and 156 added this week. New identified issues: running kernel version getting captured, random filenames in GHC debug symbols, and timestamps in headers generated by qdbusxml2cpp. Misc. Holger Levsen went to re:publica and talked about reproducible builds to developers and users there. Holger also had a chance to meet FreeBSD developers and discuss the status of FreeBSD. Investigations have started on how it could be made part of our current test system. Laurent Guerby gave Lunar access to systems in the GCC Compile Farm. Hopefully access to these powerful machines will help to fix packages for GCC, Iceweasel, and similar packages requiring long build times.

Zlatan Todori : How to answer as a master

I have spent some fair amount of time during the life to explore making great responses to generic question (technical one included) and I can say without doubt that it is a pretty simple thing one could learn. First of all, answering question via email or in personal, it is very important that people feel that the person answering is there and is really "getting" their question. So a personal notice at beginning or at the end is not necessary but is a big plus. Particular part of answer should have 3 phases: straight yes or no answer, brief explaining why yes or no, and then explaining the opposite solution. Very important to keep it precise and simple as possible while explaining all what is needed for the person which asked question. For example Joe asks:
Can I install library libfoo1.2 without breaking software foo1.1
And Jane would answer:
Hi Joe, very good question as people often do try things like that and could end up in complicated situation. So the answer is NO. Pulling the libfoo1.2 would break foo1.1 because there were numerous changes from libfoo1.1 that break backward compatibility and there was also rewriting and porting to a newer version of language. Now having that out of way, you can safely pull also foo1.2 and install it with libfoo1.2 which is tested and should work for you without any problems. Best regards, Jane
And that's it. Lean, clean, cyborg.

Michal Čihař: This was Sri Lanka

We've spent beautiful weeks on Sri Lanka in January and February. On the way we've seen many different places - ancient cities, mountains, natural parks or beaches. Here comes selection of photos which I like most.

Lunar: Paranoia, uh?

A couple days ago The Intercept has released new documents provided by Edward Snowden. They show the efforts of the CIA to break the security of Apple plateforms. One of the document introduces the Strawhorse program: Attacking the MacOS and iOS Software Development Kit:
(S//NF) Ken Thompson's gcc attack [ ] motivates the StrawMan work: what can be done of benefit to the US Intelligence Community (IC) if one can make an arbritrary modification to a system compiler [ ]? A (whacked) SDK can provide a subtle injection vector onto standalone developer networks, or it can modify any binary compiled by that SDK. In the past, we have watermarked binaries for attribution, used binaries as an exfiltration mechanism, and inserted Trojans into compiled binaries.
I knew it was a plausible hypothesis, but just reading it black on white gives me shivers. Reproducible builds need to become the standard.

Thorsten Alteholz: My Debian Activities in April 2015

FTP assistant Another month, another statistic. This month I marked 90 packages for accept and rejected 20 of them. Squeeze LTS This was my tenth month that I did some work for the Squeeze LTS initiative, started by Raphael Hertzog at Freexian. For some reasons this month I got assigned an exceptional high workload of 26.5h and I spent these hours to upload new versions of: [DLA 191-1] and [DLA 193-1] have been only sponsored uploads, where Markus Koschany and Joachim Wiedorn prepared the patches.
Due to the large number of hours I was able to make a php5 upload which resolves several issues that have been marked as no-dsa before. At this point I would like to thank Jan Ingvoldstad for his thorough tests of the package before I did the final upload.
The next big adventure will be ruby1.9.1. Unfortunately my workload in May is (hopefully) exceptional low, so I am not sure whether I can finish this by the end of that month. I also uploaded [DLA 206-1] python-django-markupfield security update although no LTS sponsor indicated any interest in this package. Other stuff While searching for another bug, I stumbled upon #128818. It is a whishlist bug for apt to support rsync while downloading package metadata. It might not be useful for the entire Packages-file. But wouldn t it make sense if each package gets its own file and one has to download only stuff that has really changed? Donations Again, thanks alot to all donors. I really appreciate this and hope that everybody is pleased with my commitment. Don t hesitate to make suggestions for improvements.

Andreas Metzler: balance sheet snowboarding season 2014/15

A very late start into the season, with a nice ending. We had about zero snow until after christmas, and not just down in the valley, but also at 2000m in the mountains. My first run was therefore very late, on January 1st, followed by two short excursions (8:45 - 11:20) due to too many people on January 5th and 6th. After that we had more than enough snow which allowed me to go to Diedamskopf most of the time (basically only natural snow there, which makes better slopes). I went there almost exclusively until they closed on Easter sunday after heavy snowfall in Holy week, and had 5 more days therafter In Dam&uumlls and Warth/Schr cken. Last run was on April 19. Here is the balance sheet:

What does not show up here is the number of times I walked (with and without snowshoes) up the mountain and used the lift down and obviously also tobogganing.

Keith Packard: the machine architecture

The Machine Architecture Here's a brief introduction to some of the hardware concepts within The Machine. As the team at HP that I'm working with are busy working on Linux kernel changes motivated by the hardware, I'm hoping that providing this kind of documentation will help Linux kernel developers outside of HP evaluate that work, and work by others in related areas. Joining HP and learning about The Machine In January, I joined HP to work on Linux for The Machine. I'd watched Martin Fink's video and read other articles on the new hardware coming out of HP labs. I had hints of what they were up to, and the possibilities seemed exciting enough to entice me to go back to HP. When I arrived at HP, one of the first things I got to read was the external reference specification for The Machine. 170 pages detailing a more significant shift in computer architecture than I had been given any hints of, both in my interviews at HP and from what I could see in the press. Since then, I've been eager to tell people about what we're doing, and I'm happy to say that we're finally ready to start the conversation with this brief description. A Short Outline of Storage within The Machine The basic unit of The Machine is a collection of hardware grouped in a Load Store Domain. A Load Store Domain consists of: Here's a diagram of how the various bits of the hardware are hooked together: And, a brief description of the elements within the picture: I've intentionally drawn the shared memory in a large box to emphasize the notion that this machine is more "memory-centric" and less "processor-centric". The shared byte-addressable persistent memory forms the sole persistent storage within The Machine. More to Come I'll continue to publish information about The Machine and our related Linux work as we work on the hardware and software.
