Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Planet query result

My recent Planet query got two legitimate replies: Planet JD is a personal Planet (though the owner, David Pashley, does not mind if I mention the address); in the comments Gergely Nagy mentioned his Planet which does not feed directly off my site yet. This leaves at least two planets unaccounted for: their identification strings are Planet persson and Planet BTJ. Anybody know about them? Some people have wondered why I need to query like this, after all, everybody can easily find Planet GNOME, right? Well, I should be so fortunate to be republished by them, though I fail to see why they would. However, most Planets feeding off my blog are not easily recognisable. I don't particularly mind Planets, but I like to know about them. After all, I am interested about my readership :) I would be satisfied with a page that listed planets in a way that would allow me to translate an Apache log entry into a URL of the Planet in question. Having the Planet URL in the Referer field would not be a bad idea, either. ObDebian: I should be starting implementing query-dctrl soonish.

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: A Planet query

I see from my logs that more than one Planet is republishing my Debian bits. It seems there is no way for me to figure out what those planets are (I know about Debian Planet since I submitted my blog there myself) without doing something like this. I have two requests for the maintainers of those planets:
  1. Let me know that you are republishing my bits; if your planet is publically available, let me know the address; if you ask, I'll keep it to myself. (Debian Planet need not bother, I already know you.)
  2. Please, consider syndicating en/ instead of en/debian/.
My mail address is <ajk@debian.org>. Or leave a comment to this entry :)

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: I am slow sometimes

About two weeks ago I got a mysterious bug report regarding BNFC: for some reason, builds failed on some architectures due to ldd failing mysteriously when invoked by dpkg-shlibdeps. I finally got around to tracking it down during the Easter holidays, and it turned out that GHC6 produced static executables on those arches. Eventually Ian Lynagh, the GHC6 maintainer, told me that this had been fixed. I am so slow sometimes. Instead of just uploading a new version closing this bug with a version constraint on the build-time dependency on ghc6, I just asked the submitter to retry a build with the new version. How thoughtless of me. Fixed, now.

An aquaintance on IRC pointed me to an amusing story featuring God. I rather like it. It is similar to my own theology :)

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: How I will be spending March

I just sent the following email to certain mailing lists and individuals on campus:
Did you ever wonder how computers could be made prove theorems? Did you ever look at logic and tell yourself, wow, this should be automated? Are you... ... an IT student interested in logic or software/hardware verification? ... a math student with a taste for logic and the foundations of mathematics, and with an interest in computer science? Starting on Tuesday, 2 March 2004, I will give a series of lectures on *** Automated Reasoning (TIE 329, 2 cr) *** We will look at how logical information can be processed on a computer. We will discuss (both in theory and in practice) fundamental automated reasoning methods such as unification, resolution and semantic tableaux. In the end, we will have constructed a simple automated reasoning system. A familiarity with first-order (predicate) logic is necessary. Other prerequisities are the Automata and formal language course (or equivalent) and programming experience. Enroll via Korppi. The course has a home page at http://www.mit.jyu.fi/antkaij/opetus/ap/2004/. For the benefit of our foreign students, we will use the English language.

The contents of the following files in /var/lib/apt/lists could not be
validated due to the lack of a signed Release file, or the lack of an
appropriate entry in a signed Release file. This probably means that the
maintainers of these sources are slack, but may mean these sources are
being actively used to distribute trojans. The files have been renamed
to have the extension .FAILED and will be ignored by apt.

It would be very nice if stable could be re-signed with the new signing key. Why is it that this is not automatic?

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Grep-dctrl 2.3 does numeric comparisons

Just uploaded to experimental a new version of grep-dctrl, 2.3. It can do numeric comparisons:

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Workbone is going to marry Workman

Yes, we decided to make the workbone binary package come from the workman source package and kill the workbone source package.

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Workbone work

Workbone is essentially a curses-based wrapper on an ancient version of Workman's hardware support. I noticed that Workman includes a version of the Workbone sources and the workman Debian source package does not while it certainly could build the workbone binary package. I sent mail to the workman Debian maintainer, asking whether it made sense to replace the current workbone with workman's workbone.

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Adopting workbone

I noticed workbone was force-orphaned and decided to adopt it. It seems to be orphaned upstream too, trying to reach the last upstream maintainer on record.

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: grep-aptavail in experimental

I have now started a series of experimental versions of grep-dctrl, in which I intend to implement most, if not all, of the outstanding feature requests. The proud first new feature is grep-aptavail, a grep-available lookalike that takes its input from apt-cache dumpavail by default. The grep-dctrl 2.2 release is therefore for all you grep-available users out there that kept dselect only to run dselect update. It will be installed in experimental shortly. (Note that you need to explicitly select experimental by pinning or by the -t switch to apt-get in order to install this version.)

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Fun with the new CD/DVD burner

Yesterday, I finally set up my new toy (_NEC DVD_RW ND-1300A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive). Immediately tried debian-installer on the secondary machine. Found out it does not boot from CD. Spent hours considering flash BIOS update (the BIOS is from 1992...) and writing a small boot assistant that would fit on a floppy and simulate a proper CD bootup. Eventually found out about Smart Bootmanager, which was godsent. After lots of problems with floppy booting, I finally got debian-installer to boot from the CD-RW-simulated business card but saw it froze at loading RAMDISK. Realized the machine has only 24 MB of memory. Decided to try again with the primary computer. Tried installing sarge on the secondary disk (with the primary disconnected to prevent any collateral damage from bugs and misuse). Looked awesome, but there were problems. Since it was 5AM at that point, I went to bed. Now trying to persuade the secondary computer to boot from stable boot floppies. Fun!

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: The annoying banner thingie

I started the grep-dctrl rewrite last spring. I soon had most of the code implemented, and I asked for testers on -devel. There were no debs at that time, and so it probably was not much of a surprise that nobody volunteered. I got discouraged and abandoned the project for several months. In August, just before my vacation at work ended, I decided to polish the code, and I did. I prepared debs and was ready to submit them to unstable. (At that time I was under the impression that experimental was the wrong place for any grep-dctrl stuff.) I felt it was necessary to warn users about the code, since it was sure to contain nasty surprises. I considered sending a mail to some lists: -devel-announce would have reached my audience, but the message would have been inappropriate there; I feared it would not be noticed in -devel. I considered a message at installation time, either with debconf or without. However, debconf messages are seen by system administrators and not users, so that was not an attractive option. I finally decided on that annoying banner:
==========================================================================
                                  NOTE
grep-dctrl has been rewritten from scratch. Although this does add new
features, regressions are certainly possible. Please watch for them and
 report them to the BTS.
==========================================================================
(The above annoying banner will not be shown to you again, unless you
request it with the -B switch. It will also be removed entirely soon.)
I took great care to make the banner as unobtrusive as possible, still taking in account that it had to be prominent to have any effect. I added logic that would suppress the banner after a user had seen it once (using a dotfile in home directories, ~/.grep-dctrl-banner-shown; if you find one in your home directory, you can now safely remove it). I did not print it to stdout (it would clobber the output) nor to stderr (it might be redirected, which would have been counterproductive); rather, I used /dev/tty. After all, many people use grep-dctrl in scripts without realizing it; especially they would need to know that there was a weak link there. Nevertheless, I expected to get flamed for this. To my considerable surprise, I got no reactions - aside from several good and substantial bug reports. The banner stayed in longer than I intended, mainly because I was exhausted by my teaching duties during the autumn. I finally removed it last week, in 1.103. And then, several days after the banner had been removed, I get a bug report (which, strangely, is still open even though I sent a closing message almost 24 hours ago). That's when I decided to post this entry.

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Grep-dctrl 2.0 uploaded

'nuff said. Go nuts with it.

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Grep-dctrl delayed again

I found another bug. Oh well, I think I'll finish this upload and report the bug myself. It's not a showstopper. EIEIO!

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: The Programmer Bought the Farm

Thank $DEITY I asked Jordi how he uses grep-dctrl, for because of that I just found a HORRIBLE bug in the grep-dctrl I was nearly releasing. Here-a-bug, there-a-bug, -EIEIO

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: First order of business for grep-dctrl update

... is bringing back grep-dctrl internationalization and its Finnish localization. Anybody want to help me with this? :) After that I'll prepare a 2.0 release that closes #208646. Contact me at ajk@debian.org if you are interesed in helping with grep-dctrl i18n (I'll also take offers for localizations for any locale:). You can also /msg me (ibid) in IRCnet or OFTC.

Antti-Juhani Kaijanaho: Grep-dctrl rewrite status

You know that annoying release-critical bug on grep-dctrl, saying that it's not releasable? Well, I have used my new year mainly to work on that. I have fixed all but one of the known regressions; only i18n is missing. My internal checklist for that bug is getting the regressions out of the way. I hope to get that done on Tuesday. Then I hope to be able to close that bug.
