Steinar H. Gunderson: VLC makes a lot of sense
Studying signal processing, I'm a lot more happy to work with VLC-based streaming
than anything else I've come across so far (not that I've worked a lot with
it, but hey): It makes so much more sense to deinterlace video at the client
side than the server side, and it makes so much more sense to stretch an
anamorphic signal to 16:9 on the client side than on the server side. VLC lets
us do this fairly painless, and both the image quality and delay seems to be
markedly better than Windows Media. (I wish it was all a bit better documented, though,
I wish the Debian packages would include XViD support out-of-the-box, and I wish
the Vorbis sound output wouldn't have odd screeching in its output from time to
time.)
Now, if I could only stream this to WMP and keep the sanity... :-/ (Oh, and that
mplayer, Totem, Xine and whatnot would also take the streams, but that's really
secondary.)
