Barry Hawkins: Defraying technical debt in java-package

I had so many plans for this weekend, but the first of them ate the entire two days. In working on the next release of java-package, I came across some serious issues with alternatives creation that had crept in under my watch when I first became involved with the package. It was one of those times where accepting a huge patch with tons of files introduced an error that I missed; that’s part of the trouble with some patches you receive; they are submitted with someone only thinking of a very specific problem for the moment, with no thought for the package-wide implications and any technical debt the suggested resolution may incur. There was nothing for it but to slog through the install and remove scripts for all 8 JREs and all 8 JDKs looking for the bug’s presence. Sixteen hours later I had corrected the issues and tested the install of all the JREs and JDKs on i386. I had a professor once who asked what was necessary to earn a PhD. After some of the more pompous asses in my class had spouted out their opinions, the professor stated, “a hard butt.” He said it wasn’t about being brilliant so much as it was about being persistent. The friends I have met since then who have shared their PhD stories have confirmed my professor’s allegation. I think Free/Open Source Software development is like that; what does it take to participate? A hard butt. On that note, my sore butt is getting out of this chair. Oh yeah, kudos to Mr. Burrows on aptitude 0.4.0; I love the changes. Control-T alone was worth the wait.

Barry Hawkins: java-package 0.27 released; IBM Java2 5.0 support added

Version 0.27 of java-package has hit the unstable archive today. Thanks to the encouraging (or maybe urging) ;-) of my colleagues in the Debian Java™ Packaging Project who still primarily run on PowerPC, support for the IBM Java2 5.0 JREs and SDKs (currently in beta) has been added with this release. Hopefully that provides some relief for PowerPC and s390 users who have been languishing in Java™ 1.4.2 land until now. Even if your JRE or JDK version was supported by a previous version, I encourage you to repackage it with this latest java-package. A massive revision to the alternatives installations has been carried out, and users should find that all of the expected executables in a JRE or JDK bin directory now have alternatives entries installed. The exceptions would be kinit, klist, and ktab. Our handling of system preferences for Java is still being and hammered out; quite an unwieldy thing what with the alternatives and all that.

Andres Salomon: hate-campaign-o-meter

It’s sad to see MJ Ray, our savior and future DPL, engaging in a hate campaign against AJ. It brings a tear to my eye. (Note: the above statement is sarcasm. If you don’t get it, see this, this, this, and this. See, I can claim that criticism I don’t agree w/ is “hate speech” too!)

MJ Ray: DPL Voting 3

I don't care much whether someone attacks me because they want to or because they're led: I'll still dislike them. The candidate whose teammate told Anthony Towns to send that email isn't named, so DPL Campaign Redux doesn't change my vote. I don't want that sort of illogical inconsistent intervention from a DPL. In my opinion, None Of The Above should beat Anthony Towns. By the way, other criticisms are vague because they would also involve publishing comments others made in private, which usually I won't do. Details available on request to DDs who ask.

MJ Ray: Cycling: the Bridge to St Germans

The last time I visited the beer shop, I stopped on the return leg to take these pictures from the bridge to St Germans. [pictures on my site only]
This mind-bogglingly sparse landscape is only a few miles south, not much fun to ride across in rain or a strong wind, but fantastic in springtime. Bring your bike up on the train and either head to the Queen's house at Sandringham (hillier), the beach at Snettisham or ride out southwards near the railway and catch the return train from a station further down.

MJ Ray: Google Bugs: China: Not Just Google

As noted in TunaSpecial's Google Redux, MSN also complies with censorship requests and Bill Gates defended Google when the question came up at WEF. Once this stink also started to stick to the other China-censored search engines, they tried the face-saving move of asking the US Government to help - like that's going to happen while US shoppers prefer cheap Chinese consumables. Just remember the flak EU Trade Commissioner Mandelson took for enforcing the anti-dumping rules.

MJ Ray: Go Charles Go

Mutual respect between faiths needs to be restored so as to overcome the distrust that poisons so many people's lives, Charles said. "This, of course, is made infinitely more difficult by the stereotypes and absurdities propagated by certain sections of the media," he said. -- Reuters
Please, remember social issues when you cast your DPL vote and Rank NOTA High rather than approve candidates you're unhappy with. In reply to Riku Voipio's criticism of the UDHR, with apologies to Ross Burton for the title.

MJ Ray: The DPL Debate 2006: The krooger effect

While discussing the debate with another DD, I noticed something interesting. While Ted Walther goes in too hard and too heavy in part III of the debate (lines 600 on in the log), two of his targets demand evidence rather than answer his questions. One example was Jeroen van Wolffelaar responding to Ted Walther's questions like "do you think that trying to kick people out of the project because you don't like their religious views is something to sweep under the carpet?" with the answer "can you prove one quote where I'm discriminating based on religion?" Why do that? It's usual to ask for evidence when one is undecided, but how could he be undecided about whether he discriminates based on religion? Why not reject that suggestion too? Some will assume the target(s) are avoiding or ignoring the question because they're undecided whether they need to confess yet, but don't want to lie. However, I decided I think Jeroen is ignorant or careless, rather than bigoted. At least he gave some answer, unlike several others. The other notable evader IMO was Steve McIntyre about debian commercial activity and DUS's tax registration (presumably based on the -project and/or -uk list traffic from the last year) but I'm a bit too close to that for it to change my vote. Even those who rank Ted Walther low should admit that he asked some of the trickiest questions in part III and mixed it up a bit.

Jeroen van Wolffelaar: Jumping on the blogging bandwagon — DPL debate over

Last night, the IRC debates for the ongoing DPL elections were held. Having a record number of seven candidates, it was at least from a candidate point of view very chaotic, the time between questions was not enough to both properly answer the questions and also read the responses of the fellow candidates. However, for the public, I guess the tempo was quite okay. I hope it's been an informative event for Developers, even though the nature of such debate doesn't allow for in-depth discussions. See the debian-vote mailinglist for that. Only about 24 hours left to answer questions... need to hurry. When finally reading though the debate answers now, I noticed Anthony Towns saying:
thanks to the wonders of blogging, there's plenty of opportunity to talk about things in a fun interesting way even when they're not finished, or not important enough to warrant a mailing list post
While I believe there's room for some regular reports on various Debian internal projects like I mentioned in my platform, this made me finally get around to actually creating a blog, something I've been meaning to do for over a year. And of course, I needed to because all the other teletubbies have a blog too! Anyway, I'm glad the campaigning period is nearly over, so I have more time for such things as a lintian upload, some PTS hacking, or study. And of course decide on my ballot for the DPL voting period.

MJ Ray: Banana Rep W Nfk: Robin Hood Reversed

I authorised payment of my local tax bill this week (2006-03-16) and it angered me. The borough council has been promoting its 3% tax cut again and again. So, it's shocked quite a few townspeople that their local tax bills show nearly a 5% rise. [Next 3 paragraphs sent only to my site.]
I'm not against paying a bit more tax if it's needed, but I feel borough service levels are falling and that's justified by the 3% tax cut. This is Robin Hood in reverse, with the mostly-richer villagers getting a tax cut at the expense of the mostly-poorer townspeople. Why has this happened in a pre-election year, do you think? Are Conservative councillors worried for their village votes? I hope we don't have another cut next year, else we'll probably pay more and have no services: welcome to the Banana Republic of West Norfolk, where a tax cut can give you a bigger tax bill.
