Kai Hendry: Where was I?

School children learning about Free software
I feel a little stupid for my last post about my unstable machine. It was the hardware to blame and my hard drive finally crashed during a Linux conference in Mendoza, Argentina. Typical. At the conference there wasn´t much new for me and I regret that I didn´t get organised enough to give a talk about the Web and WHATWG stuff. Though I did manage to meet good people and talk about some topics that are of interest to me. As usual the fabulous friendly CafeLUG geeks from Buenos Aires were there, led by the wonderful DD Marcela. I also met an inspiring guy from Cordoba who founded a successful software company that works with free software. His brother gave a great talk about it at the conference. I really love to see Free software power people to start a business. Oh and about my thinkpad X40 hard drive replacement. With the help of another new friend Fredrico from Mendoza, we called up IBM in Buenos Aires and arranged a new hard drive and a battery within 5 days! I didn´t know if my machine was under warranty still, phew. Unfortunately IBM called the next day saying they didn´t have any stock and the wait from the US is about 2 weeks. Since I have no idea where I will be in two weeks (ok, probably Sao Paulo, Brazil) I cancelled that request and now I have found a free Windoze (hopefully not trojaned) terminal just over the Andes, in Santiago Chile. Tough life!

Russell Coker: planet debian, spam, and SE Linux

In regard to my post yesterday about Planet Debian I received the following response:
James Purser said I'm betting that your feed is an atom feed. We had the same problem on PLOA with Jeff and Pias feeds when they switched to atom. Planet needs to be upgraded.
Well I am using an atom feed, so this probably explains it. Sorry for the inconvenience to the Planet Debian readers, I guess that things will stay the way they are until it is upgraded.

Also when viewing my blog entry in Planet Debian I realised that much of a spam message had got pasted in to the URL field for the Planet Debian link. Oh the irony that I only found this embarassing error because of a bug in the Planet software.

This brings me to another issue, Security Enhanced X. With SE-X (before you ask, I didn't invent the acronym) you can use SE Linux to control communication between windows on an X desktop. With a modification to the clipboard manager (klipper in the case of KDE) every piece of data that's copied from an application will have a security context assigned to it and this context will be checked against the context of an application that is to be the target of a paste operation. Klipper will also have to support relabeling clipboard data. Therefore if I want to cut text from my email client (Kmail) and paste it into Firefox then I would have to relabel it with the appropriate MCS categories. This would permit me to paste text from an email into a web form with a few extra mouse clicks, but would prevent me from accidentally pasting the wrong text. Keeping in mind the fact that there are many more embarassing things that could be accidentally pasted into a blog entry than the contents of a spam this doesn't seem overly difficult.

PS Before anyone jumps to conclusions. When I receive GPG encrypted email or other material that should be kept confidential I try and avoid cutting it, and if I have to do so I clear the clipboard buffer afterwards. Keeping spam a secret is not really a priority to me so I didn't take adequate precautions in this case.

Benjamin Seidenberg: New Debian maintainer Benjamin Seidenberg

Dear Benjamin Seidenberg! Your account ‘benjamin’ has just been created in the central LDAP database of the Debian project. Please note that it needs a bit of time until this information is synced with all developer-accessible machines. You should be able to login or upload packages after about 30-60 minutes. The password for this account can be found appended to this message, encrypted with your GPG key. Email sent to benjamin@debian.org will be forwarded to astronut@dlgeek.net, to change this visit http://db.debian.org/forward.html.
This has definately made my day. I would like to thank my sponsor and advocate, Anibal Monsalve Salazar, the Debian Cyrus Team (especially Sven and Henrique) and especially my AM, Cl ment Stenac (Zorglub). I couldn’t have asked for a better AM; he answered every mail within a day as far as I remember, was extremely supportive and helpful. I remember when I sent him the last T&S response he appologized on IRC that he couldn’t write the recommendation until that evening, whereas some AMs have taken months to do it.
For those interested in the NM queue’s proccessing time, here is an approximate summery of my progress through NM:
Waiting for advocate: 2.5 weeks (This should have been shorter, I had my advocate lined up, but then there was a question about me signing the key of the guy who signed mine, but I hadn t checked his ID).
Waiting for AM: 6 months
Going through the checks: 2.5 months. (This would have been shorter had it not been right around the end of my senior year of high school, with the mad rush to cram everything in before exams)
Waiting for FD: 1.5 Months
Waiting for DAM: 1.5 Months
Waiting for account creation after DAM approval: 2 months.

James Morrison: Sadists

For those that don't know, Katelyn has become a sadist. Her idea of a slow 4 mile run.

Other recent events, I got learned about San Pablo. The fuzzy vodka party with some hot tub time was worth the confusion though. I wasn't as silly
cycling home
though.

I hiked up Half-dome the other weekend. It was an amazing night hike. Too bad I wussed out on the cables. I think the world may be telling me to get a car, because this is the second time I've gone camping where my ride has left a day early without room for me. The last time I split my stuff up and hitched a ride home, this time I split my stuff up again, and went in one vehicle until the first BART station, then took the BART home.

James Morrison: Alumnit

So, is it valid to have current niti employee's on alumnit? Oh well, at least they aren't breaking the page. Hint, Hint Kelly.

James Morrison: SF in the desert

This weekend showed me that burning man is still San Francisco drops the stores and goes to the desert. The lovefest had the music, the Folsom St. Fair had the leather and the night ride had the glow sticks on funky bicycles.

I did get some cool chain ring tatoos this weekend. I think the chain ring belt buckle is the way to go.

James Morrison: Living in the city

So I went out to a independent short film showing down in the mission today. I was able to put my bicycle inside the small theatre. I went down because one of the shorts that was supposed to be shown is called "Toddler Zombie Sluts", now with a title like that, I curious what is up. "Toddler Zombie Sluts" was not shown, instead I saw a music video for the song "My Pussy is Magic".

The other thing I learned is that going up Duboce from Castro is a rather steep section of road. I wasn't able to bike all the way up it. I'll have to work on that.

James Morrison: Settled

I think I'm now settled into my new place. I've done laundry and have internet. The next challenge is to bike to work. However, I need to get my bike back from the shop for that to happen.

James Morrison: Mystery rocks

So this afternoon while I was wading through some old email, I kept hearing rocks land in my kitchen. Twice I picked up rocks that magically appears. They could have come through the window, but that would be a difficult throw.

I've discovered that wandering over to Golden Gate Park is almost always a good idea. Yesterday was the Tour de Fat where I got rather sunburnt. This evening there was a drumming circle going on. I'll have to get a diggery-doo for next week's drumming circle.

James Morrison: Park stories

Yesterday in the park, there was other good stuff besides the Tour De Fat. There was some bicycle polo. There was also a game called sloshball being played. Sloshball is a simply game. It's basically soccer baseball (kickball) with the restriction that everyone must have a beer in hand at all times.

James Morrison: Google analytics

Wow, I finally found a way to make Google Analytics. Above the graphs that don't display (I have no flash), there is few icons beside the word Export. The first icon is text, so I can get all the nice aggregated data out of Google Analytics using the text output.

James Morrison: Still interesting weekends

I think the important thing this weekend is that I saw Katelyn truely drunk. Other than that the night ride organized by the SFBC was fun. I've yet to find a group in the city to do longer weekend rides with yet though.

James Morrison: Quick ride

I would like to thank those that rode into work with me today. You guys made it possible for me to make it to work in record time. The total ride time was 2.5 hours from 24th and Mission.

James Morrison: Pour Some Sugar On Me!

I went out to see Def Leppard and Journey last night. It was certainly an all ages show and Def Leppard was better than Journey. I discovered today that Corb Lund was playing in the city last night. I thought they were tonight, this is the second time I've gotten the date of a concert wrong that I wanted to see :(

James Morrison: Burning man

Burning man has come and went for me. I made it there, made it back (on a yellow school bus), and it was good.

James Morrison: 6:21

What's up with me seeing the time first 3 days in a row at 6:21. My alarm goes off way before that time, but somehow that's when I get up.

James Morrison: sailing

I went sailing for the first time yesterday. It was a lot of fun. The weirdest part is this is the first time I've been on a small vessel in salt water. So when I got splashed with water it was obviously salty, but it still seemed like a surprise each time I got sprayed.
